Sometimes a host just needs to let the guest tell their story without interruptions. This is one of those cases.

Memory is so interesting. I’ve heard Howie tell this story before, and then stumbled onto this interview. The Cardin segment is on YT: 1. Howie says the tiger is 20 feet long, or maybe bigger. It’s the length of the couch. 2. He says it took almost 2 minutes to get the tiger into place. From time they pull back the curtain to when he sits down, just a little over 30 secs. 3. Pouring sweat. 30 seconds of mild activity (helped by Ed), he *may* have needed a dab. 4. Back and forth about the tiger. They start talking normally (no silence like Howie says). After a bit of banter, and a couple of jokes, Johnny asks if he’s going to explain the tiger, and Howie says, “I’d rather not talk about it.” Johnny comedically reacts, laughs, and replies, “You’re the guest. If you don’t want to talk about it…” They move on. Now it’s been about 2:11 since they pulled back the curtain. 5. Howie says Johnny never looked at him, a couple of jokes later went to commercial, and that was it. In fact, the two had a normal “Johnny with comedian” chat segment that ran about 10:20 long. Johnny looking at him the while time as with any other guest. Howie finishes with a silly Howie joke that breaks Johnny up, and Johnny thanks him for being there. 7. Johnny brought on the next guest. Johnny actually apologizes to the last guest who was bumped because they went long, thanks Howie, and says his goodnights. I don’t know if Howie knows about KZbin. 😂

Agree! He must have felt some shame about not being invited back, to the point that he contorted his own memory about how poorly the appearance went.

& here he is trying so hard to stay relevant (good grief, this was the 80's!) by making stuff up that can easily be proven otherwise.

I remember this well...I thought it was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen in late night. I can't believe it is so infamous now. The fact that he went through all that trouble to get the prop on stage then refused to talk about it made it even more hilarious.

Howie’s explanation of the show is completely inaccurate. Watch the video of the actual show. Johnny ends the show with Howie still in the seat. This host of this podcast should have done his homework.

I saw a replay of that Carson Show. It did not happen the way Howie remembers it. He stayed on for the whole show, actually bumped another guest, and Carson interacted with him the entire time, laughing and engaging with him!

Yes! What a weird flex. He's trying to stay relevant & using Carson (a comedy legend!) to do it. Carson may have passed, but the taped episode doesn't lie. The 80's have been over for a super long time... Howie needs to cope 🙄

I think the staff and Ed were pissed. Not sure Johnny minded. Plus they gave Howie 10 and half minutes. I think Howie was a little stressed and did not recall it properly since it was a pretty funny bit. And the 1 minute of dead air to drag a paper machete animal and carrot across the set is classic Howie. I think Howie did great with only a few hours to come up with the bit.

In Howies mind this was a complete disaster. Just rewatched the appearance. The audience laughed a lot…Carson kept him on a long time they even ended up bumping someone. If Carson was that angry it’s because he himself was eccentric too. There was one flat joke at the end but all in all for 1985 pretty entertaining.

It's easy to find this interview, and most of that didn't happen. The screen shot shows that the tiger wasn't close to blocking anyone but where McMahon sat. Everyone was laughing, it didn't take two minutes, Johnny thought it was funny, he was on for ten minutes total or so. I wonder if the "joke' is how bad he tells the story related to what actually happened.
