I think this movie is so beautiful honestly. It’s a little hard to follow, but like Rob said, once you watch it a few times it clicks! The whole movie is basically one big circle. We see at the end that Sophie goes back in time, and at the beginning we hear Howl say “I’ve been looking everywhere for you”, so you don’t really understand it until the end. Also that’s why Howl made his castle move! He built it to look for Sophie, and he dated a lot of pretty girls in hopes of finding her. He even worked as a double agent in the war in case she was on either side. This story is so beautiful and I’m glad y’all reacted to it! ❤

Sophie has her own magic, the things she says become true. The Witch’s spell turned her into an old woman, but it is really how Sophie sees herself. Her negative self talk reinforced the spell. When she felt self-conscious, or weak she was old. The moments when she became young are her moments of confidence. In a way it is connected to her love for Howl. Loving someone and being loved in return makes you more confident and brave.
@DanielFlores-or6yo11 ай бұрын
In the book, she would accidentally enchant the hats that she would make by saying things like “this is a hat for someone that will marry into money.” If I recall in the book, they called her type of magic “words of power”
@JuanitoEsBonito11 ай бұрын
I always suspected Sophie had magic simply because of the full on power up Calcifer got from eating a few strands of her hair. But that may have no correlation.

"Howl! Calcier! I know how to help you now! Find me in the future!" - Sophie "There you are, sweetheart, sorry I'm late. @itsjust_jia11 ай бұрын
Little fun fact: Josh Hutcherson plays Markl ! Also, i don't know if you figured it out already, but the reason why sophie was sometimes shown as young again was because in those moments she had more confidence in herself. For example, the scene where she was talking to Madame Suliman for the first time, she defended Howl but also stood up for herself, as opposed to the beginning of the movie when she was having trouble telling the creepy watchmen off.

That line is really funny and also its interesting that at first we see Howl as a great wizard, dressed really extravagant and all of the sudden he hits the audience with such a line, it made him more reliable that he is still in fact a young man with his own worries about his looks
@spaceshiplewis11 ай бұрын
In this version, the one reason Howl had been harassing beautiful girls is because he was looking for Sophie. Sophie's curse and how old she looked depended on how confident she felt.

interesting fact about the movie because I am obsessed the only time that she goes back to being young is when she is confident in herself, whenever she gets self-conscious she gets older because that is how she sees herself on the inside. turnips true love is Sophie but it isn't the other way around, so a "kiss from your true love" really had emphasis on your This movie is supposed to be a commentary on war, when he talks about the other magicians fighting tthe war and losing themselves, no knowing what side they really are a part of anymore its supposed to really bring it home how war doesn't benefit either sides and how much people are able to lose themselves markl is voiced by Josh Hutcherson Calicifer being so "obedient" with Sophie in the beginning really is just howl loving her. if you rewatch it you can see all of the times it is mentioned that Howl has been "looking for her" and that he already knows who she is and is in love with her.

In the moments when Sophie seems to be younger it's because she's feeling good and beautiful the way she is or when Howl makes her forget this thought of not being good enough (this will happen more and more as they live together). And the fact that Howl is a wizard allows him to see her as she really is without the spell and to see how beautiful her kind heart is. 😍

i always tear up at the end omfg the music....the scenery....THE ROMANCE.....yeah top 10 movies of MY LIFE
Howl and Sophie presents the problems with confidence in two opposite ways. Sophie’s problem is external, as she openly expresses that she didn’t think she’s attractive even when other people disagree with that statement. Howl’s confidence problem is internal, as he looks really fine on the outside, but that appearance on the outside is what he hopes he will be while internally, he always views himself as a failure and not measuring up to expectations. The ring Howl gives Sophie leads directly to Calcifer, and since Calcifer has Howl’s heart, by giving Sophie the ring, Howl also guides Sophie straight to his heart, rings are often used as a symbol of commitment, and I think this ring serves a similar purpose as it’s basically Howl saying that Sophie will be the one that he willingly let into his heart and his life. Also, when you look at Sophie and Howl, you will find out that the story is also about adulting, Sophie and Howl differs on this topic, Sophie wants to skip adulting process entirely and straight into old age, as there is not much to gain and not much to lose at that point in life, whereas Howl is permanently stuck in adolescence stage where people’s approval is everything to him, and if he didn’t meet the expectations, his world would fall apart. But it’s precisely because Howl holds on to his childhood and early years that he is able to create the flower garden for Sophie.

I simply CANNOT take it with Christian Bale's voice in this movie, any time Howl speaks I just have flashes from American Psycho and that makes everything he says super creepy instead of nice and comforting.
