The story of Mulan comes from a very old poem. It is debated wether the poem is based on a true story, but it's just to old to really verify. As much as I love this movie, Mulan in the poem is just so much cooler. In the poem she takes the place of her father and younger brother, serves in the military for ten years fighting many many battles and rose to the rank of general. She also was never found out, and only let people know when she retired from her post. There is a live action Mulan from Disney, but the consensus is that it isn't very good. If you want to watch a live action version I would recommend the 2009 Chinese live action rendition. It's a more accurate version of the story, and is much more action packed, and quite a bit more bloody and emotional.

So, aside from everything else that makes the 1998 animated Mulan so great, here are some other tidbits: 1) They actually made Captain Lee Chang Bisexual. Albeit, subtly. He fell for "Ping" back when he understood him to be a man. However, he also fell for "Mulan" (as they were the same person and he liked Ping/Mulan for who they were). That's why Lee Chang is well-known for being a Bisexual icon in the LGBT community. Especially since he was a Bisexual Asian (which is even rarer). 2) The 1998 Animated Mulan is the first-ever Disney animated medium to have cross-dressing and it not be looked down upon as a joke. 3) Mulan is the only Disney Princess with a kill count in the thousands. 4) The reason Shan Yu didn't care that Mulan was a woman was because Mongolians were a matriarchal society at the time. Women were traditionally seen as Warriors/Hunters while the men were the Forgers/Gathers. So women held higher authority and power than men. 5) Shan Yu had Juandis.

“Be a Man” - so good, Jackie Chan covered it, complete with his own choreography in Kung-Fu form!

I always love your reactions to animated movies, I've gotta say they're one of my favs alongside the kdrama and anime ones... Actually, now that I say it, I might as well say I like all of them XD

Best part of the song "A Girl Worth Fighting For" is the blatant insult on Chi-Fu. Chi-Fu: I've a girl back home who's unlike any other Yao: Yeah, the only girl who'd love him is his mother. Chi-Fu's stunned silence is priceless. 😁🤭😅😂🤣☠️

It's even better in the french version because Yao says " Depuis tout ce temps, elle n'a sûrement plus de dents " what can be translate by " Since all this type she probably didn't have anymore teeth " (Chi-Fu's line is the same but years in french is translate by the word " ans ")

The huns are so creepy in the movie, especially their leader. I remember as a kid being scared as they came over the snowy hill. 🤣

Better than the live action reboot from 2020.

Mulan 2 is a great sequel!! Hopefully you guys will check it out one day. 😊💕 There's also a Jackie Chan music video to I'll Make a Man Out of You, where he sings the Chinese version and does martial arts moves... it used to be my favorite DVD extra because I found it so hilarious. 😂
