Howlin' Wolf (Chester Arthur Burnett) was an unique and influential American blues singer who also played the guitar and the mouth harp. He was 6 feet, 6 inches tall and was known for his howling like a wolf and during this clip you also will see moments of his wild stage performance.
This blues giant was born in White Station, Mississippi June 10, 1910 and died in Hines, Illinois January 10, 1976 of a kidney disease.
This song with the Wolf Gang ( Hubert Sumlin, Eddie Shaw, Sunnyland Slim among others) is the starting track of the 'Live & Cookin at Alice's Revisited' album 1972

I knew Wolf most of my life. From childhood till he left this life. Both he and Hubert were my adopted family.Wolf bought me my first harps. And put them in my hands. My own family tree was broken. Wolf had a tender heart. He knew my Gram, my mother and my aunties. Nobody in my life was as good to me as Wolf and Hubert were to me. I took music as my life. And Thanks to Wolf.I met a whole lot of people's. We would sit and talk quietly together. Wolf told me of his boyhood in White Station. How his step-daddy whipped him and abused him. I heard the emotion in his voice. I saw his teardrops fall as he shared with me. His story, from his heart directly into my heart. People talked about Wolf often. Said this and that. They didn't know the man. They simply didn't know his kindness, the goodness of that man. All the hard roads that he traveled. And his strength of character inside of him. Forged thru adversity. He was the most courageous man that I ever knew. I miss Wolf and Hubert terribly every day of my life. Anything good that I am in my life. Is due to them caring about a little disabled boy. That they took under their wings. To keep the rain off of. I give respect and love to Wolf and my adopted Uncle Hubert. As I did when we were all together. Aw. Wolf was the Greatest....!!

Thank you and bless you son. I am another expression of the blues and love all the greats. Wolf was part of my life as was Hopkins, Hooker, Vinson, Waters etc. You got to get down before you get up. And you got to get up before you get down. That, to me, is the Ying/Yang of the blues. Great in ALL kinds of weather! Peace.

ITILII to listen to this and feel it, you’ve had to have gone through some shit. Kids in the west these days don’t have to go through enough shit to get this. They’d just ruin it if you forced them into it. Just enjoy the fact we still have access to it.

An absolute icon of American blues. I came to his music in the late 60s, and didn't even realize he was still alive. He's still at the top o' the heap as far as I'm concerned. I have to assume the one person to dislike this is a real square.

Reading that this was recorded at Alice's Revisited makes me very nostalgic. I didn't see Wolf there. But I was at booked-to-capacity Muddy Waters performance at Alice's Revisited in 1970 or 1971. (I can still picture where it was on Wrightwood, where the street meets Lincoln.) I was in Chicago to see my sister perform in the touring company of Hair, and couldn't pass up the opportunity to see Muddy. I did see Wolf in 1972 or 1973 in Ann Arbor opening for BB King. Both were great, and neither was anything like the other!

long time fan... first heard Chester on a black underground radio station out of Buffalo in the mid 50's , later to become WBLK with the Hound. Living in Oshawa it had to be past 10 at nite to get a strong enough signal. Between The Wolf, the Hound and a fading radio signal i've been mesmerized by the persona ever since . If there was only one entertainer I could get to see in my life it would be the Wolf

October covid-19 2022 Amazing!!! I used to visit this hippie bar venue called Alice's Revisited where Blues Legend Howlin' Wolf and other Southside Blues artist would come to perform. Main!!! I was there then. Alice's location was on Wrightwood and Sheffield Ave. Down from DePaul University under the elevated el-train tracks on the north side of Chicago back in the day around 1968. This music venues historical significance has never been properly documented. It provided a showcase of Who's-Who of upcoming/emerging, Underground notables and great jazz, blues, rock and even African world beat music Artist. It's music programming was groundbreaking, diverse for the time. Eclectic, and Avent Guard for that era. Perhaps comparable only to the famed Fillmore West in San Francisco in its Hay Day. The small stage and small seating capacity at best would maybe accommodate 65 to 80 people, And that's standing room only. At the time I lived in Chicago's notorious Cabrini Green housing projects on the near north side of the city. Visiting Alice's regularly was my Escape and nightlife foray into music and diverse cultures. I was maybe 19 or 20 years old then. Believe me, this place was amazing.

My brother saw Wolf at Alice's (though after his heart attack.) Someone in the audience made the mistake of pulling a harp out and blowing while Wolf was onstage. Wolf came down from the stage, mic in hand and told him "there is only one Howlin' Wolf and I'm the wolf!" The silly s.o.b. with the harp got very flustered and left the joint. My brother also remembers that Wolf, his wife and her lady friends showing up in a Caddy or at least, a deuce and a quarter. He said the car came up about a foot off the ground when they all got out. And he remembers Wolf's sax man Eddie Shaw being one of the busiest guys in Chicago. He claims he saw Shaw not only with Wolf but Luther Allison and J.B. Hutto. Apparently, they hired him because he always did a great job of opening the show.
