I forgot until you posted this that I had some work done on my sprinter last year while I was travelling - and they broke a glow plug!

The glow plugs are an embarrassingly terrible design for Mercedes imo.

Yes bad design, sorry to hear they broke your glow plug

After few hear cycles the plug end will get loose as you said. But during a cool down overnight or similar the bit will drop into the bore. Then you start it and bang smash walloping as it smashes into the piston and valves. Best bet is to bang in the remaining tip of the plug. Remove injector then using a flexible thin long magnet fish out the tip through the cylinder. No head off and no engine smashed piston and valves. Hope this helps some one.

i was tring to remove a glow plug from my 2010 sprinter 2500 and it broke off . i drilled it so i can tap it and remove it wiith the removal tools , but it broke while the tool was in , now the glow plug body is broken 3 inches below the engine head , its still there but i cant reach the remanings or i can not drill in too much because most drill bits are too small for it , i mentioned you said to run the engine and the pluug will come off by its own !!! does it? if so what exactly should i do to get that broken stuck pc out????

Hi Good information. Thank You for sharing. My problem is my glow plug in 08 3500 sprinter the center separates from the outside and is stuck inside, I can put the outside back and forth but is impossible to take the piece from inside. I guess my other 5 glow plugs are working fine. ? Should I cover the space with some screw by any means just to avoid any leaks and drive for a while. Do you think this will help or just leave open. Please advise. I am horrified by this I have only 65 thousand miles and have many problems with this vehicle, don’t even know if I should keep it or just sell it. Thank You for your help. Andrzej

I used a small 2x4 over the stuck glowplug and about 200mi an it shot into the wood about 1/2” so it would have gone threw the thin hood for sure!

now i have A BROKEN glow plug and its drilled too far deep , i did it so i can remove it with the removal tools but it didnt work , now my plug body is stuck inside , i was thinking about driving with it , so when you were driving it how fast were you going? was it under regular presure or had the van loaded with weight???? how long did you drive it to get it out???

Если сломаеться glow plug можно ли поставить новый укороченный glow plug в тоже место чтоб держало давление не повлияет ли этом в будущем при старте двигателя зимой просто хочу поменять все свечи но пугают что могут сломаться и можно попасть на дорогой ремонт
