"For a 4" Slab: 0.0123 x 1400 sf = 17.27 Cu. Yd." It's the number ".0123" that is important here. It is easy to remember, and all you have to do is determine the size of the slab in square feet and multiply by .0123 and you quickly know how many cubic yards of concrete you need to order. Does everyone know this number? Of course you will add some to be sure you don't come up short. The number for an 8"x16" footing is .033. Suppose you have a footing that is 198' in length: .033 x 198 = 6.00 cu yd.
