In upstate NY they’re much longer and come in jars, and they’re an off white color like bones with chocolate in the middle. Maybe that’s more of the origin, because they look more like actual chicken bones?

In Germany, we use them for New Year's Eve which makes a lot more sense since the old custom says that we use fireworks and fire crackers at midnight to chase away the bad spirits for the New Year. In Germany, your fun and colorful design also fits perfectly.

I love when you make big cakes that can be scaled down. Not sure how much smaller you can make it with the secret chamber but you could do cute mini one without the chamber. Or you could use mini Swiss rolls (home made or shop bought) and then decorate them.
