I love these podcasts about the books you’re reading! I think I mentioned to you before I was an avid reader before my stroke two years ago. Now I don’t want to read anything but my Bible and books about the Scriptures. I am reading the book “How to Read the Bible For All Its Worth” and LOVING it!! I also have in my stack a couple of other books that you have recommended in the past. Can’t wait to get to those! As far as the end of August being a tough time for you; sending you a hug. I would love for you to add another podcast during the month about books. Oh and can’t wait to see your rebound Bible!! 🌻

Like you said... if you didn't go to Bible school, if you didn't already know better, you would have walked away very disillusioned about the Word of God. I don't want that to happen to anyone else. I am currently reading The Unseen Realm: Recovering the Supernatural Worldview of the Bible by Michael S. Heiser. My book club read this a couple months ago and I’m just getting around to it. It is very thought provoking. It answers questions about why wasn’t Eve surprised when the serpent spoke to her? His research started when he was questioned about Psalm 82 - who was this divine assembly that God was standing in? He says you will never read your Bible the same way again. Highly recommend

I know in your last video you said you are not into novels. What do you do when you just want some mindless chilling out? Maybe you never do that, I don't know, but I need that as part of my life, as well as studying God's Word and Christian books. I know about Bart Erhman. He was one of my favorite writers in the time between I left a so-called Christian cult (as if there could really be such a thing) and tried to leave God and the time I came back to God--He pulled me back to Him with His love and mercy. Ehrman does say he is not a believer anymore in at least one book I read by him. I agree, I think it is wise to avoid him unless a person is really grounded and rooted in their faith.

Faith, have you ever read Michael Heiser? I’m reading him with a critical eye because I am really concerned about a book of his being used at my church. Actually a better word is ‘alarmed.’ He’s straying into the territory of “I have a new revelation” from Psalm 82. The book is Unseen Realms and I’m actually finding myself pausing my reading to ask Jesus to protect me as I read, because I’m that concerned about the bad theology. And once I have finished it, I’m going to have to prayerfully go to our church leadership about it.

Dear Faith, The best book, hands down, that explains textual criticism of the N.T. that I read while learning Biblical Greek is titled: The Text of the New Testament, by Bruce M. Metzger. Several months ago you recommended a book on hermeneutics titled: The Hermeneutical Spiral, by Grant R. Osborne. I read the first edition of this book in 1993 and it's one of the best there is on the subject. The only draw-back is that it might be too "technical" for a beginner/ lay person. A great book for anyone just starting to study hermeneutics would be: Basic Bible Interpretation, by Roy B. Zuck. Love your channel ! Your friend in Christ,. Dave

I believe Christians should read secular or maybe even anti-Christian literature(provided they are prepared) in order to boost their critical thinking and stop being in an echo chamber, because I think sometimes the message of staying away from these kinds of books might lead people to face real life problems of which no literature could have prepared them for and could lead to very serious problems. So bottom line, read things from the other side, don’t get stuck with an echo chamber re-affirming your ideas.

I’m always trying to make sense or see a real life example of when a “pearl is cast to swine.” I think this misquoting Jesus book is maybe it. Jesus’ words are very precious and impactful, and their application sometimes are more relevant than we realize. Either for the situation at that time or for our every day lives. Yet I think for someone to take the scripture and say, here’s Jesus here and there doing this and to discredit, not misquote but discredit... My thinking is if we look at pearls trampled under swine, those pearls initially weren’t without value even if they were treated or regarded that way. That’s what you review of that book brings to mind.

Ehrman is extremely negative and now calls himself an atheist, I believe. I can't recommend him or Peter Enns at all. They have open disdain for the Bible. It's insidious and undermining considering the marketing of their books.

@@HowtoFaithALife Yes, and there are so many engaging and edifying books out there that go deep into Scripture without distorting it or challenging it in an ugly, ungenerous way. I love your reviews and your open and honest practice of discernment. So glad I found your channel!

How do you read so much? Or does it just seem like a lot? I mean when it’s a necessity (like studying for class) I somehow magically find time but when it’s leisure it’s kind of here nor there 😂 Also, I feel like I may be the only one who wants to read misquoting Jesus after hearing your review. It would definitely be on the bottom of my list but I am curious to read something from that perspective. If only to maybe understand people in that boat better.

I love Lucy Peppiatt. I read Rediscovering Scripture’s Vision for Women and it really helped me to see there are solid, biblically based alternate interpretations of some confusing passages about women in the NT. She also has some YT videos, if you’d rather watch than read :)

Wow! Bart Erman (sp?) is new to you? I feel like I hear him mentioned ALL the time -- Mike Winger's podcast primarily? He points out the bad/unbiblical logic in a bunch of sources. So I definitely concur with your final recommendation on the book -- do NOT use Bart Erman to learn anything but WrongThink (or how a WrongThinker actually does their wrong think).

Mike Winger… Oh My… He has one opinion, it’s right, any he has no compunctions about being quite snarky as he informs whomever of that fact. He does have knowledge to share, tho I frequently disagree, but sometimes I just have to do the PAUSE and go somewhere else for awhile…. And, I have to adjust the playback speed to 0.75. He talks faster than I can hear.

Seems like Faith doesn’t know who Bart Ehrman is. A super smart professor and scholar who’s main goal in life is ‘proving’ Christianity and the Bible wrong. Debates on KZbin with him taking the atheist position. I pray he will someday comes to know the Lord. He knows the Bible very well and doesn’t believe in it very very much.
