I'm a professional automotive technician, and shop owner, and I have definitely more than dabbled in AC voltage repair. I have to say this video was well produced, presented, to the point ,and informative, and I've always wanted one of those Klein non-contact detectors but since I have so many different DVOMs and even DSOs, I've always passed them up. This video has motivated me to follow the link and finally buy one. Well done, sir, and thank you! 👍🏻 (I subscribed as well!)

I tried this but still not able to find it. All bulbs show to have power but none are coming on. Maybe a stupid question but mine has a plain green piece between the first light and second. Maybe this is a fuse or something? It doesn’t seem like it opens.

Same exact issue with my troubleshooting. I was able to open the "plain green piece" that has some component that I suspect is a capacitor, but I certainly do not know for sure. I've looked through the comments and don't see the gentleman addressing this or other several other similar issues. I've tested all my bulbs in a section of the non-working string and they are all good. I tested each plug for power using the $30 tester I purchased after watching this video. Still no luck, but now I'm out $30 :(

I have watched every video on You Tube on how to fix lights and yours is the best one. You explained things so much better than anyone else. Some are so technical that I had no idea what they were talking about. Yours, hands down, is the one that explains things where anyone can understand what to do. Thank you so much.

Enlightening explanation 😂 But seriously useful, esp the trick of turning the plug! My case is a little more complicated because the lights are attached to a Christmas tree so the strands are near impossible to separate and it's really hard to follow the chord around the branches. There's got to be a trick I'm missing!

Glad I found your video today. Just what I needed after watching another video with diagrams instead of "hands on" like yours. Much easier than the LED Light Keeper I bought several years ago which requires puncturing the wire insulation (which is sometimes nearly impossible). Used my inductive test probe to check for voltage on both sides of the socket and the Light Keeper to verify the LED is good. Troubleshooting the unlit section led me to 2 bad LEDs (one with a resistor with a broken lead) and a bad socket. For those that may not know, when testing LED bulbs there is a positive and negative lead. If it does not work one way, switch your tester on the lead. Thanks for the video!

Thank you so much! You saved me! I had just bought a few brand new set of lights out and just to be safe I tested each one of the strands prior to hanging them on the eve of my house. All worked. BUT, sure enough, the minute I was done hanging all the strands of lights, there was one strand dead smack in the middle that was completely out. Brand new and I tested it??!! 🤷🏼‍♀️ Well, thank God I came across your video because I was about to hop back on the ladder and replace that entire strand with another one. About 4 lights in… I was able to figure out which light bulb was out, put a new one in and VOILÁ!!.. no having to rip any lights down to replace them with a new strand. Thank you for taking the time to share this! Like I said… You’re a complete lifesaver ! 🙏🏼🎄

Good video, well explained for those who didnt know how light strings work. I already knew how to detect if a bulb is bad if half the string is out, but more frequently these days, my strands are completely out, OR, the lights will glow so very faintly, that they are almost undetectable. In the case of them still having power to the next plug end, but not lighting, glowing very very faintly, I have never been able to figure out what was wrong, maybe something with the rectifier? But on LED srands WITH replaceable bulbs, and the entire strand out, I'm not sure whats going on here. My "no touch" voltage detector shows power the entire length?

I like this video. It seemed to make sense. However, every wire, bulb, and socket appeared to be working and getting power on the first half of my G30 LED strand that was out, which leads me to believe it may be a faulty in-line resistor, if that's what that solid bulb socket is... there are 2 in the strand... 1 directly after the 1st bulb in the 1st half of the strand, and the 2nd one was located right after the first working bulb in the 2nd half of the strand. I replaced the entire strand in less time than I spent trying to locate the problem. Who knows, maybe I'm the problem. 😅😅😅

But ... but ... if the bulb is burned out, the strand should still light. They're designed to have continuity whether or not the bulb is lit (unlike the bad old days). So what we're looking for is the point where the circuit is broken. And here's a question ... if you are getting a voltage reading at the beginning of a strand, why aren't those bulbs lit? I am confused.

This process didn't work for me. I'm a little baffled as to why. I have a 200 light LED string. The last section of approximately lights number 150 - 200 were out. The culprit was light number 190. The voltage detector stopped sensing voltage at about light number 155. I only found the bad bulb through persistent testing of each bulb.

I wish I had seen this a couple of weeks ago. My wife was determined to find the bad bulb(s) in the lights which are pre wired into our tree. She used my voltage tester and even changed almost every bulb on that string but never found the culprit, so she bought a new string and wove it into the tree. We’ll try again next year and follow your process. We were unaware of the possible need to reverse the plug in the outlet.

Do yourself a favor, don't buy pre-lit trees. Once they get to be 3-4 seasons old, the whole light sets start to fail and it's impossible to find the bulb, because they all fail at the same time.

I have icicle lights and it’s really frustrating because one section is actually burnt out and in the other section looks great, but not only that when I replaced one bulb like you sporadically other random ones went out. No specific pattern either. The strand that hangs down making it a icicle light some will have 2 to 3 out and another one will be just fine. It would be nice if when they went out it would be some kind of pattern so I could just trace it down the line. But nope…..lol. It’s sooo frustrating. The crazy part is is I put a burnt bulb back one of the sockets to hold the place and it went back to normal for that section. It’s just a mess, 2 steps forward to get 10 steps back! Lol. And I’m so cheap. I hate to trash them especially when it’s only a small section. Have you been been tempted to cut it and rewire it…lol. Repairing one light creates problems that never existed down my line. Thank you so much….your video is the best out of the what feels like the hundreds that I have watched. Even if my problem is not fixed, you taught me things that I never knew to last me a my lifetime. Thank you again!

I have a question and a comment. If the detector threshold is 70v, because of voltage drop per bulb, you're going to come to a point where there is power to the bulb, and enough voltage to light the bulb if there was a continuous circuit but not enough to be detected. OK, perhaps with incandescent it's a pure resistor and with no current, there's no voltage drop so you could get over 70v all the way to the last working bulb, maybe. But with LEDs, they require a minimum voltage drop to conduct, otherwise no voltage should be on the other side. Comment: the leading cause of LED Christmas light failure is rust. LED leads are not copper but steel or other ferrous metal. This was even before copper started getting expensive. But a break caused by rust is still an open circuit so the inductive testing is still valid. Now if only those sockets were standardized and the LED or incandescent bulbs had standard voltage and current ratings, we'd be in good shape. You can get bulk LEDs but the voltage and even size/shape varies so usually not a perfect fit. You'd think by now it would be easy to get replacement LEDs specifically designed for Christmas lights, and in packs of assorted colors.

The fundamental problem with modern Christmas lights is twofold. Because if of the hard drive to as cheap ass possible we have : 1) incandescent lights that mostly break after one season and are impossible to fix because the bulb to plug Interface is so cheap ( wires folded over opposite sides of the base) that repeated unplugging and insertion will break even good bulbs. 2) the LED versions are typically no serviceable ( tree string lights) and are absolute crap in terms of brightness and appearance compared to the incandescent and thus not a replacement. So we have no working solutions. I wish we still have the well made incandescent of the 70’s. Those were bright and serviceable and looked good. Unfortunately it’s more efficient to just buy new strands and trash the old ones. Because they are so cheap.

Great advise on tracking these opens, also have found if its not the bulb check for disconnected wiring at bulb junctions, very cheaply made.

I have power running through all 3 wires no matter which way I put the plug in. The only thing that's lighting up like a christmas tree is my voltage tester. I can't find the dead bulb. The tester goes off no matter what I touch. And the entire strand is not working.

Thank you for the information this video is much better than most on the sibject. I still prefer to buy high quality lights instead of working on broken big box store brand strings & nets. I used to waste time trying to fix lights knowing all the technical reasons why they failed when it was clear I could have spent that time at a job & earned enough to buy new lights I stoped the madness of repairing cheap lights. In some cases were I can't get a type from a high quality source I buy new units & swap the bad ones out for the good & return them as defective.

All very well on string lights. Unfortunately the lights built in to a tree are not quite so easy as it is almost impossible to follow the strand. You can do it though, just more difficult.

Complete with a bad dad pun at the end. 🤣 I have LEDs on my balcony railing and your affiliate link in my Amazon cart. Why does that tool not pop up at Christmas time next to the cash register at every hardware store? Thank you for this video.

Every once in a while I am able to get a GREAT dad joke in there 😂 I am really glad to hear that you liked the video. They want you to buy their overpriced lightsaver tool. It works somewhat like this does but this to me is just handier and better at pinpointing. Thanks a lot for the feedback Elizabeth!

Nope it didn’t work for me, I did exactly n still no result 😢 is a shame I have to throw away these LED c-7 lights, so expensive when I have same issues with cheap ones

I have a dead LED string and every bulb triggered the sensor. I made sure the line side was going to the bulbs. I tried it with a working string and removed a bulb and the test worked like your video. I did find two corroded sockets with broken LED leads. Something is strange with that brand of light string.

Well you made that look easy. It's only voltage tester will work then correct? It's been 3 hours and tingling bulbs to find out the whole strand isn't working. Going to be an easier way, great video

How come you were testing the middle of the two strings at the base of the LED instead of the bottom of the light/bulb like you did the incandescent? Is there a difference in testing the two? Or did you do it that way because the LED bulb was so fat?

I don't know how I've read so many posts and watched so many videos and this is the absolute best I've seen yet. I like this method 1000% more because it's actually tracking the problem and not pulling every bulb and just guessing where the issue is at. I've been in cable TV for 24 years and the divide and conquere method is the tried and true way to break a problem like this down. Ordering my voltage detector tonight!

Will this method work for a string of LEDs that a section is very dimly lit and the rest is normal? Or could it be one of the resisters? It's a 50ft string.

Great Video. I got here after I had replaced the fuses and still did not get the lights to work. Getting a no contact voltage tester tool like you suggested in the video seems a no brainer and a great addition to my tool box. Many Thanks!

A string of lights on a table is too easy. Mine are permanently attached to the tree. It is difficult to find the start & end of a individual string of 50 or trace it bulb to bulb through the tree. We faced the dead parts to the wall. There are multiple connectors that go together as the 4 sections of the tree are assembled. Each connector seems to serve several light strings.

My tree is pre-lit. The light strands only have 2 wires, not 3. Will this technique work for the lights I have?
