If you like sea shanties like this check out the fisherman's friends - they're from Cornwall, England and whether you like all the songs or not it may inspire you to learn one. This song is usually acapella but sounds great with the banjo

Love it! This song originated in New Zealand. The 'Wellermen' are reference to supply ships owned by the Weller brothers, who founded a whaling station here and had a trading company and would supply provisions to the whalers. It was funny when the song got famous this year because when I was only about 5 years old, we would sing it in school! So hearing it was like the return of a distant memory. A guy I met at a folk festival gave me & my friends a big lecture (at 3am) about how it's technically a ballad and not a shanty and also talked about how the tiktok version was not like the traditional one. It's all very interesting!

Us banjoists sing in higher keys so oft that I never realized you could sing that low! Lowest tune I sing is Darlin' Corey in Am, so I go low to that sweet A2 (anything under that is a challenge)

Cowboy with time travel powers that he has no control over gets sent back in time aboard a whaling ship where he falls in love with one of the crewmates before being cruelly ripped back to his own time and all he has to remember his lover out of time is this songs, so he learns to play it on the banjo and sings it during especially lonesome nights on the ranch

Double C with top D raised half a step to Eb. Makes it open Cm tuning.
