Yes Cooling the tank will relieve any thermal expansion, but this would not make the valve hard to remove. Make sure that the water to the tank is off, then relieve pressure from the relief valve befor removing. Have the new Relief valve ready to replace right away. The bigger the pipe wrench the easer it will be. Good luck.

Yes you're right. I do have the water shut off valve to the water heater off. This keeps the air from getting into the tank, and you know with out the air venting the water will come out very slow allowing you to replace the T&P valve with out getting water every were. and not having to drain the tank.

In most states you can not use, PVC for a relief valve discharge. One the water just may be to hot and pop the PVC pipe, and some one could get badly burn. Copper is the best way to go. Good luck. Thanks for stopping by.

Some times yes, but if you open the release valve for a moment and clear out any debris that may be stuck in the valve some times that is all that is needed. If this does not work. You may have to much water pressure coming into the house. If this is the case you may need a expansion tank. Thanks for asking and stoping by.

What a great video. I didn't know it was that easy to do. I have some water on the floor the pressure relief valve, it's not constantly coming out. But every few days a small area is damp under the copper pipe, maybe about a dixie cups worth of water. The end of the copper pipe is also very green with mineral build up (we have hard water). The tank is 9 years old. Is that just normal?

Yes and this video needs to be updated. Thanks for asking. cut the water to the water heater off .Make sure the water to the water heater is cut off check the hot side of any faucet and see if water comes out if not good if so cut the water off at the main water line to the house. then left the little silver part at the valve to relieve the rest of the water in the tank. If you don't feel comfortable doing this please call a Plumber. This video is not for every one.
@theartofplumbing
@theartofplumbing 16 жыл бұрын
Yes your right. Six inches for the floor. To prevent any one from getting burn. Cut the pipe to high it can splash out on some one. to low it will splash up on some one and they can get burn very badly.

I think its worth metioning that the copper pipe or PVC tube running from the relief valve needs to be a certain distance from the ground

By any chance, do you mean drain valve? I have never seen a plastic relief valve. The only relief valves that I have seen as always been made of brass. Now the drain valve down at the bottom of the water heater are some times made of plastic. If this is the case yes you can replace them. like brass one's. Good Luck.

@Franz91124 depending on were you Live you may need an expansion tank, if you have to much water pressure coming into the home this could cause the overflow problem or it just may be that you need a new relief valve. Check with your water company they can tell you more about the expansion tank and if you need it. Good Luck.

In the first 30 seconds of this video, you remove a nozzle but very little water came out of the heater. Is that because this is the top of the heater or did you have to turn off water so none would come out for this procedure? Why was there no water shooting out from this opening?

The dip tub inside the water heater has broken off. The dip tub is on the cold side of the hot water heater. it takes the cold water strait to the bottom of the water heater so that it does not mix with the hot water at the top of the tank. when the dip tub breaks off it alows the could to start mixing with the hot water right away giving you less hot water.

@Xx1BIGG4xX That Valve is gone bad or you may need a expention tank install on the cold inlet side your getting to much water pressure from water being to hot or high pressure from the house main. try the cheapest thing first replace the valve.

6" from the ground, but do run the pipe to the outside of the garage. This is the majic 6"number, this is so that when the water shoots out it don't slash back and burn some one or not to high and burn some one.

@biloxigeo44 Some time it does depend on were you live. Some Areas you need an expansion tank to relieve some of the pressure. This sounds like this may be your case. Check with you local water company they may have upgraded the system increase the pressure to the community and they could give you more information. The reason the old one didn't blow off is probably because of the calcium built up on the inside the relieve valve holding stuck.

The pressure relief valve on mine stops at about the 10:00 position and seems like if I try to move it anymore would strip it out. It is similar to the one you show here in this video. It has the same amount of threads as the old one. What would cause this? How come I can't tighten this to the 6:00 position?

This would depend on the Plumbing Codes in your area. Some place you don't have to put the new water heater 18" off the ground. Check with your local code

@ateschner No Only when the temperature or pressure goes over and exceeds what’s on the T/P Valve label. If it is going off then there may be a problem with the T/P Valve it's self, the temperature of the water amy be to hot (This happens a lot on Electric water heater) Or you have to much water pressure coming into the home and in that case you would need an expansion tank added to the side of the water heater on the cold side. Thank you for the comment. This will help some one els

Well if you want to drain your water heater you need to find the drain valve located at the bottom end of the water heater. Some water heater you may have to remove the bottom cover to expose it. right were you would lite the water heater Good luck.

Time to replace the Pressure Relief valve or the water heater if it's past 10 to14 years old. The tank it self could be leaking around the thread's from age and rust you can see. Good Luck.
@theartofplumbing
@theartofplumbing 17 жыл бұрын
Very little. If you have the cut off valve at the water heater turned off. And do not open any faucets in the house. Any faucet that is open will allow air to get in, and make the water come out faster much faster this is not want you want. if your going to change the relief valve with out emptying the tank.

@Sugarglider1 When a relief valve starts to go bad it will let the water run out of the tank and you can't stop the water from dripping or running. Unless you replace it or reduce the water pressure to the tank. Thank you for the comment.

I do understand. If your water heater is in a place were you don't have to worry about getting water ever were and if the valve at the bottom is plastic take a hammer and break it off and run a screw driver up the middle and turn freeing up the blockage. if it's brass remove it with a pipe wrench and the same appy. Other then that you may need a...... Plumber .....Sorry:-( !
