Wow, this absolutely solved my problem! I have a 7 year old water heater, in good shape and I just refused to install a new one but had tried all other methods & if this wasn't going to work as my last resort I was going to just frustratingly put my hands up & buy a new one. I searched other videos and yours is the only one that mentions this, which is just crazy that this info isn't out there. We even went to a plumbing store and their schematics of the parts didn't even show this part. I called Rheem & they sent me a new part free of charge & shipping would of been free also but I opted for expedited shipping. So if you have a Rheem water heater, call Rheem tech support & they will send you this part for free, regardless of how old your water heater. Thank you, Thank you for posting this video and being so thorough, you saved me all the money I don't even have :)

Just wanted to say that even though I didn't have to do anything with my burner assembly, this helped me restart my heater after a low gas pressure event hit our area during the cold spell right before Christmas Eve in the Austin, TX area. When you explained that you needed to let the pilot line refill with gas after having everything disassembled in order to flush out the air, I realized that even though I thought I'd held the pilot button down long enough when first trying to relight the pilot once gas pressure was restored, it probably wasn't nearly long enough. Waited a solid minute just holding down the pilot button this time, and the pilot lit but went out after pressing the igniter, so waited another 30 seconds on top of that, and it stayed lit this time. I guess there was still a lot of air in the gas line to our heater from when the pressure went low and that it just took all that time to get it flushed so that the pilot could finally relight. Huge thank you for that moment of enlightenment!

I have to give it to ya man! I have installed HVAC Systems, Water Heaters of all types but have never seen one of these. I had no clue why my WH had no flame roll out type sensors and was left scratching my head wondering why my THERMOPILE would show over 750 mv on my multimeter and my WH would light and come on for about 15 seconds then go out. IT WAS RUNNING OUT OF AIR to burn. I had no clue about this TRD device or how it worked. Thank you for posting this video because you saved me a lot of money. Plus my TRD was free from Rheem. The reason mine blew is I had shut off the gas a couple of times and the change in pressure I assume caused it to blow.

Our Rheem water heater stopped working after a year and a half, we called Rheem and they will not honor the warranty unless you pay a certified technician to diagnose it and request the part so we called Hone Depot where we bought it and they want $189 to send that technician out. Then we have to pay again for installation of whatever part it is. Ridiculous! That could easily cost more than replacing the entire heater! Luckily a family friend helped us and replaced all the parts, for $45, but even after this it wouldn't stay lit! Searching for why we found your video. BEST. THING. EVER!!!!! Thank you for this very informative video. I was not familiar with the attic install issues. As a home owner, I opted to remove my thermal release device prior to installing my new water heater to ensure long operating life. In our current era of "everyone needs a helmet to walk outdoors," removal of any safety device is shocking and frightening, however, the flammable vapor ignition resistant mechanisms (FVIR) were introduced (mandated) in 2013 as a result of politicians reacting to a handful of horrible events where children were severely burned by the accidental ignition of gasoline vapors. To prevent such accidental ignition, we must simply avoid storing gasoline/flammables near any sources of ignition. Keep your gas can away from your water heater and furnace. If water heaters maintain plenty of fresh combustion air, they will burn nice and blue as designed. The challenge is that most, if not all, water heaters are subject to clogging of the flame arrestor which, all too soon, becomes much like a clothes dryer lint trap. Thanks again for the great video!

I'll argue against removing the TRD. I'm currently working on a 2017 Richmond and the TRD has been tripped. It's installed in a laundry room where there are no vapors to ignite and cause it to trip. This one was tripped (and it known as the most common issue to cause a failure) by low gas pressure. The heater is in a rental unit and the tenant is to stingy to fill the large propane tank and has been using 20lb cylinders! I don't get it, in the long run it's more cost and trouble than just filling the main tank. Anyway, the constant fluctuations in pressure from the small tank caused the water heater to overheat and trip the TRD. A non vapor related issue and I'd say the device done it's job and potentially saved the house from burning down. Lack of airflow can cause an overheating issue as well, the vents being blocked by dust and hair will cause overheating and trip the safety as well. So it's not there for only vapor related issues. Something to think about.

I vacuumed around the hot water heater and tried to blow air down through the vent with the plunger pushed down. I called RHEEM. They sent me a new one free. My water heater was built in 2004. On the day it blew, the temperature outside was below zero (gas fired boiler) and I was running a HOT full washer. Let us say, you have replaced 100 of these RHEEM safety vials in your life. How does the glass bulb thing work? Here is the answer: As already explained, if the tank gets too hot for any strange reason, the bulb breaks, and as not explained as far as i could see, by breaking, it allows a spring to shut off air to the chamber to extinguish combustion. The people who had this device implemented want to know about it if it happens because it is not supposed to happen. If it breaks, they don't want it replaced without understanding what caused the overheating and fixing that. Just like if a fuse keeps blowing, you are supposed to find out why, not just keep replacing the fuse.
@scottscoville11183 жыл бұрын
So that's why How to P went so much into cleaning and doing everything you can to keep the thing clean and clear and so forth. but if it's overheating for some other reason than being crowded, dirty or in the hot attic, you need to determine it. And if it is the tank's own fault that it is overheating, the tank, not just the glass bulb, needs to be replaced.

Thanks a million for posting this video! I was uncertain if my tank had that FVIR safety switch. To find out that all tanks after 2003 have some sort of FVIR sensor. My Rheem tank DID have the sensor and it WAS broken. Since Rheem is now sold at Home Depot and box stores, most of our plumbing houses have dropped their product line and parts line. The ONE local distributor in the Cleveland area told me that you cannot find the FVIR switches at any dealers, it must be ordered directly from Rheem. (They want to know what happened to the heater and why it broke). I could not wait 3 to 5 days for a part to arrive .... I was able to find the part on Amazon (Same day delivery) also as a back up, I found one on Ebay which was being sold by a local Ebay seller. "It is a safety device." I think a better design would allow somebody to reset the electric device, sort of like a breaker switch for electric wiring. AFAIK - Rheem is standing behind their product and providing free replacements to the consumer. A reputable company. I had another brand (from Sears) that also had a safety device. Sears would only provide a replacement IF their guy who charged a fortune would come out and put it in. It happened multiple times - I am happy Sears is essentially gone.

The Gas / Water Company threatens to charge an extra $25 if they can't install transmitters on the water and install a new gas main. Fine! They replaced the gas meter outside but came inside and said the water meter had the new radio on it. Then he tried to lite the water heater. He had no clue as to push the igniter on the right hand side as he was pushing on the "RED" pilot button. He simply said: "You will have to call a certified plumber!" It was working fine until 40 minutes ago. No broken glass bulb to shut off air (No air, no flame, no flame, no thermal coupler voltage, no voltage, the burner and pilot go out as gas is cut off at the control valve. ) It is "TORX - 20". There are Star Screws but not in the US. 140+ types & names! It's not your fault, everyone calls the Star bit / screws. ASE Master Tech, retired!

Thank you for the video -- really helpful in understanding the Rheem set-up. But what caused the tank to overheat in the first place? What will prevent it from just overheating again after you replace the FVIR? Do they just wear out after so many years of use (my tank was installed in 2007)? I don't want to replace it, and then have it overheat again as soon as I get it running. Thank you.

If the water heater is in the attic. It can overheat fast in the summertime. To much heat and not a sufficient amount of airflow will call for the safety device to kick the water heater off. Also if the water heater is not properly vented would cause a water heater to shut down. Check for the clogged vent pipe. I appreciate your comment. 👍👍

Thank you. Great video. Just pretend I'm really stupid. You explained how the bulb full of oil bursts, then the water heater shuts down. You later stated a time or two that it's a great system since it shuts the flame off immediately. What you said was "when that little glass tube pops, it holds the device in place, once it's popped, it releases that device and that device shuts down the water heater". What I never heard was HOW it shuts down the water heater. You went on to explain the importance of ventilation from the bottom and cleaned out some vent holes and vacuumed everything out, but it sounded like the ventilation issues were common with "attic" installations. I assume, the oil, plugs the vent holes and prevents combustion. Is that how the safety device works? If so, installing a new bulb full of oil without cleaning out the vent holes would be fruitless. Please enlighten me, or us, if others are wondering.
@pumpguy22133 жыл бұрын
Never mind. I figured it out. The bulb is holding open a spring loaded vent plate, beneath the bottom of the combustion chamber. When the bulb bursts, the vent slams closed and the flame and pilot are extinguished due to lack of oxygen. Another fellow posted he removed the device since it was valid only if someone were to store gasoline or other flammable liquids near the water heater. You cannot simply remove the device but you can stick a 1/4" bolt or other object in place of the oil filled bulb to keep the vent open. I'll try it and let you know what happens.
@theartofplumbing3 жыл бұрын
Once the little safety bulb device pops, the gas from the gas control valve is triggered and shut off right away shutting gas to polite and main burner, and yes when a water heater is installed in an attic there is always the possibilty the water heater will over heat in the hotter months of the year and this unfortunately triggers the safety divice as a safety issue. Most of people don't know this about water heaters in attic, not even some plumbers. Water heater manufacture don't recommend water heaters be install in attic because of the entence heat in attics unless there is some kind of proper air flow, like may be a roof vent near by or something like that. Me personally i don't care for water heaters in attic and I'm sure most plumbers would agree. Hope this helps. Thank you for the comment.

@@theartofplumbing OK. Thanks again, and to make things absolutely clear, for anyone else out there frustrated, angry and willing to part with 1-2 thousand bucks For a new, yet unneeded water heater, this is your answer; the safety device, pictured in the above video, on the bottom rear of the combustion chamber is the FVIR (Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistant) FTR (Fixed Thermal Release) assembly designed to shut the flames off if there is an explosive event in the combustion chamber (caused by gasoline or other fumes from combustibles stored nearby getting into the chamber). Unseen, beneath the bottom of the combustion chamber, is a spring-loaded steel plate (or door), covering the vent that allows air to flow into the chamber for proper combustion. The plate is held open by a 1/4" steel rod about 1 1/4" long, extending through the bottom of the chamber. The FVIR sits on top of that rod and the oil filled capsule is positioned within the steel bracket to hold the rod down, against the pressure of a strong spring (keeping the vent door open). If and when the capsule bursts, the spring slams the vent door closed and stops air flow, extinguishing the burner and pilot flames as the oxygen in the chamber is instantly consumed. (Note: The FVIR is not connected, either mechanically or electrically to the gas valve. It does not shut the gas off. Rather, when the flames are extinguished, the thermo-couple cools, stops supplying current to the gas valve and the solenoid in the valve shuts off the gas.) If you try to relight the pilot, you can't, because there is no oxygen in the combustion chamber. You can see the ignitor spark through the window, but no pilot flame. If you let it sit an hour or so, the pilot will re-light (because air has seeped in by this time) but it'll go back out within a minute, or less if you turn the burner on, again, because the air flow is shut off to the combustion chamber. I put a 1/4" bolt in the FVIR in place of the capsule and everything works like new. There is also a safety fuse wired into the port where the thermocouple screws into the gas valve. If it goes, you will have almost the same symptoms but you will not be able to get the pilot to light at all. The fuse is easy to bypass (another vid shows how) but if that doesn't work, this is your solution. From what I've read, a lot of folks end up replacing the thermocouple, the gas valve and then the water heater when all they really needed to do was watch this video and stick a bolt in there. Also, since you have to take the burner out anyway, blow it clean with compressed air before re-installing and you'll get hot water faster as well.

My pilot will stay lit as long as I do not turn temp above minimum. But, come winter and we want to turn temp from A to B it will go out within the day. Turn it back to A and all is good. B, C or D are just not doable without the pilot wanting to go out within hours of bumping up the temp setting. What could be the cause? One day, we dream of possibly setting temp on C. D would be too bold.

Do most plumbers carry this part with them, or would they have to order it from Rheem? Probably should have a license contractor put it in or risk voiding a warranty, would you think? Saw a different video that showed removing a plastic, sensor perhaps, from where the thermal coupling goes into the bottom of valve assembly. You've probably seen or heard of that one? Anyway we can know the difference of what we would need, other than taking it apart and seeing if your glass safety device is shattered..?

The device you’re referring to is likely a thermal release device (TRD). These devices are often filled with a special oil and are designed to release pressure and prevent overheating in water heaters. The oil inside helps to detect temperature changes and activate the safety mechanism1.

Thank you for posting this video, it definitely helped to see the process first. I have a question about that orange grommet where the burner, ignition, and thermocouple lines run through from the combustion chamber cover. How critical is it? I'd say you want a tight seal, but I had to slice a bit to remove the dead thermocouple and it ended up cracking just a tad while inserting the new thermocouple. While inserting the grommet back into the chamber cover I noticed it was frayed just a little and it sits a little crooked in the hole. To be honest it wasn't firmly seated to begin with but in either case no noticable gaps. Any need to worry?

So great video! But quick question. My father in law came and was tearing it down to replace the themocoupling part. Well that silver wire you literally just pulled out in the beginning. He did the exact same thing but ours snapped right under the main top. Just broke right off when he tried to pull it out after unscrewing what was locking it in place. It was almost as if it was stuck. So do we need to replace the entire unit now and get a new water heater since that line broke?
