Hello Chateau owners! When my partner and I had our inn, in Canada, we installed a professional 'Hobart' brand dishwasher. They are manufactured worldwide and well worth the investment. Dishes were washed and sanitized in less than 3 minutes per load. Don't forget when you design your kitchen that you will need an area designated as 'the dish pit' The spot where you will drop the soiled dishes prior to loading the dishwasher. Tiy could easily have your one dishwasher under your coffee station and dishes above that for easy unloading from the dishwasher. Ah to be young again and to be able to do what you do. You entertain us weekly and we let those God-awful commercials run in the hopes you get a few more pennies! :) Love and light to you all!

Dish pit area could take over the current coffee area. Coffee area can be stored under island. Would by folding doors work to hide the messy part of dishes ? Passing thought. I did restaurant work for 9 years 8 of it in fast food and a year in bakery and deli. Get a professional's advice on design and lay out, set up for your kitchen. Who could meet your budget.

We used to eat puffball mushrooms all the time growing up on our family farm. They're very tasty. That brown one that released "dust" when you looked it is actually the same mushroom, but a matured one that's releasing spores so that you'll have more of them next year. When you pick them, be careful to cut them off at the ground to leave the part below the soil intact - that way it will continue to produce more mushrooms and expand the fungal mycelium (basically mushroom roots) network. Mycelium also feed nutrients to tree and plant roots, improving the health of everything growing near them.

@@HowToRenovateAChateau I agree with everything Jen Clark write up there about the giant puffball! Very wise. The puffball mushroom is a delicacy. I do hope you nurture its continuance for future very special gourmet meals. My uncle was both a doctor and mycologist who was often called to the scene however far away it was to identify inedible mushrooms that someone had mistakenly eaten and gotten sick from. he also knew the antidotes, so he was flown hither and yon at times. My father loved hunting, gathering, and preparing mushrooms for many meals that we had. So I was immersed in mushroom more from very early on, and have a high respect for being very careful about identifying mushrooms. When you do get good edible mushrooms, they are absolutely delicious and worth the effort to know them well.

I love the idea of have a storage wall. But instead of putting a coffee bar on that wall why not a sink? Then reclaim the whole island for a prep station. And create a coffee bar where the white thing is next to your existing table. I think that would make the space more functional. By having the food coming from the refrigerator, to the island for preping, then to the stove for cooking you would be creating a working trinity. Then the sink on the storage wall, with a dishwasher would make for an easier clean up. And the coffee bar on the opposite wall, next to the kitchen table for easy access at breakfast in the morning. It was just a thought. 🤔 It's going to be beautiful no matter what. You two always do such amazing work. I love your videos and I hope you have a great day. 🤗

I had a mushroom just like that grow on my property in upstate NY once, it was bigger than my head! I made steaks and soup with it! As for the kitchen, I want to suggest that you should consider having Nathan do cooking classes for you guests and therefore get a professional Chef’s opinion on how to design your kitchen 😉 Philip, you impressed me with your cooking (was Nathan coaching?) 😄😂 If you do guest parties, you might want to have that 2nd wine fridge for champagne (weddings, bachelorette parties, mimosa’s for Sunday brunch, etc). Dishwasher: will be most time efficient to have it near where your cupboards/cabinets containing the tableware belongs, and definitely 2 of those as well, one for tableware, one for pots, pans and all the prep utensils and kitchen items 🤩 Another laugh out loud, Sunday fun day vlog, THANKS Anna and Phillip (and girls) 🥰

Map your traffic patterns. Print the plan on paper and draw in crayon where you have to go to perform daily tasks. For example, coming from upstairs, making breakfast, sitting to eat, washing up, posting it on Instagram, and then going to where you go next. Then you can see if you're creating grand journeys for simple tasks, like making coffee on opposite sides of the room from the milk. You can also see if nonsequential tasks create path blocks to each other.

It's a great idea with any space where you move, and there are a few ways to do it. Heatmaps of where you physically are in a space (imagine a floorplan color coded with a color spectrum with violet being "never stand there" and red being "basically live in that spot") provide enormous amounts of insight but require data that is hard to collect without an elaborate setup. The idea of drawing paths requires some knowledge of where you'll be going, how often you'll go there, and where you were coming from at the time, which is essentially the data from the heatmap. You can subjectively come up with a heatmap substitute (which will probably miss some non-intuitive data but makes up for it by being cheap to produce), and then draw flow paths. Harvard actually did this using their students with a new grass quad: they built no footpaths, and then concreted in the lines that the foot traffic cut into the grass. Drawing with crayons is the same idea as the heatmap substitute: you're guessing what shortcuts you'll take every day for hopefully decades of regular life, but you don't need all of the setup to produce the data. One thing that can overcome some of the uncertainty of using a best guess instead of data is flexibility: you'll find that some assumptions were wrong, but if you have some leeway to correct that by moving furniture or adjusting where you put things, the shortfalls can essentially vanish.

If you can, use slide out shelves or drawers inside your cabinets. This lets you see everything that would normally get lost in the back of the cabinet or cupboard and it helps keep you organized. Also, don't forget to add an extra plug outlet or two if you can (possibly even in the island). Good luck with your renovations!

Some tips I learnt from designing my own kitchen layouts: 1. Have the crockery, cutlery and glass cupboards near the dishwasher so it’s quick to unload. So many professionally designed kitchens put them miles away. 2. While it’s fashionable to have a sink or hob on a central island, in practice it means there’s always a bit of mess there. Now I have just a clear central island. 3. It’s most convenient to have a wide but shallow pantry cupboard for stored food - it means you can always get to all the items. Deep food storage cupboards results in food forgotten at the back that is difficult to reach.4. Pull out spice drawers either side of the cooker tucks them neatly away and means they’re always to had for cooking.

Few points: 1. Definitely Designate a good size place for trash that is hidden - perhaps as part of the island underneath since that is where you do the prepping . This now make me understand that it can be hard to have two dishwashers in the island. 2. Rather that having 3 full height cupboard- perhaps just make it two to allow for more prep place and make that area almost like a wet bar section concept where it functions as both where you have the coffee set up and also where where u do your wine prep place. This area might be good area to add in a just a tiny sink for quick rinsing of wine glass (optional since most of your untensils are gonna be stored in this section right?) and the 2nd dishwasher In addition to the wine fridge all discretely in the lowers 😄- I do agree with Anna having two dishwashers esp with the guests house business. 3. Another option would be to place the wine fridge where your fridge is currently located with again another prep space and then open shelving on top where you can put ur wine glass or uppers cabinets- whichever will go with the flow. I think it be good to have like a small but designated space for setting up drinks. This will allow you to free up the coffee area space for other kitchen gadgets you commonly use- e .g. Food processors/ blender/ baking mixer… 4. Lastly perhaps you can can negotiate to place the other wine fridge somewhere other than kitchen space so Philip is happy😄 Since u guys are so good with discretely hiding your bathrooms in your guest rooms behind panelings I was wondering if it’s possible to use that gap as place to store wine or a fridge in between th secret door in the original grand dining that leads to where your current laundry room is… hahahahb just a wild thought. 5.) I do agree consultation is a must. I’m soo excited for this project!

I highly recommend a gas oven up high. I roast so many things and as I get older it get’s more uncomfortable bending down to put in/take out roasting pans out of the oven. I have many burn marks on my forearms from hitting the racks. Believe me, I would not have thought about it in my 30’s and 40’s, but at 61 it’s something I really wish we had done during our remodel. I would put the dishwasher in near the area you place your dirty dishes. Create a cabinet for platters/roasting pans. My contractor measured out the larges platter and we used that as a guide. You can then slide them in between dowels used as dividers.

What a blessing to find a puffball in your garden! Puffballs are considered mycorrhizal, meaning they have a symbiotic relationship with the plants and trees around them. They are helping fellow flora with nutrient and water uptake. The thing you found next to it was also a puffball, just in a more mature state, when the inside of the fungus develops spores to release (which you did when you pushed on it!).

Add a chiller unit helps so much chilling as you prep easy access. Also warming draw helps keep the platters warm till serving (like when you use an over to keep the dinner warm)

How about two islands? On the island close to the fireplace… Island 1) Two dishwashers one on either side of the sink, (facing the existing fireplace) on the opposite side of the island, all drawers for storage. (silverware drawer and two deep drawers below.) several sets along the island. Island 2) Seating on one side and two electric ovens on the other side. Lots of deep drawers repeating the design of island 1. The feature wall has some great ideas, just refine the details to meet your needs. I suggest electric for both ovens, propane or natural gas can impart a taste of gas on oven-baked foods. Propane or natural gas for cooktop, it gives you infinite control from simmer to full boil. This plan gives you multiple work, preparation, and clean-up areas for several people to work at the same time. I am using the same plan in my kitchen, but I also have room for a walk-in pantry. Take from this what works best for you and always consult a professional as we did. The best of luck Mark

Definitely two dishwashers and put the dishwashers right beside where you store the crockery / glassware.

Perhaps storage wall could house the dishwashers and have the sink on the island. I feel like oven, sink and fridge need to be within one step of each other but dishwashers could be to the side below cupboards for plates and glassware

I would put both dishwashers on the island. 1 facing the table and 1 on the other side where the cooking is happening. So on both sides you have easy access.

Your island appears to be the depth of 2 cabinets. If so, can the dishwasher(s) & drawers for table settings be on the back side of the island? They make appliance fronts to match your cabinets door/drawer style so it would look nice while sitting at the table.

We renovated our kitchen in Australia recently and definitely needed a designer but he would listen to my wish list and incorporate them. We have a lovely 3 metre island bench with storage drawers making ever accessible the hidden cupboards on the other side where the seats are for those items occasionally used. Good luck x

I am absolutely envious, quite frankly jealous, of you Anna...your chateau(home) is spectacularly gorgeous !! My dream, since a pre-teen, after I took out a book in the school library(which I still have, shhh!!) of PARIS...I wanted to be an interior decorator living in Paris! Sadly...my children came about & Paris was pushed off to the side, the wayyyyy side! Maybe one day I will make it to your chateau, if even for a vacation!! When you drone shot your property & all surrounding properties...I literally get goosebumps, just complete beauty surrounds your home!

Love the table by windows, but it might also have been nice to have table/seating by the fireplace with a wood stove in winter. But I can see how tricky the space is with all the doors.

It is great if some professional kitchen planners could help. Just one tip from me: Do as many drawers as you can, even in the cupboards up to the height you can still see in the drawers. Its so much easier to store things.

Philipp your sense of humor is delicious and Anna is always such a great straight man (woman). I was laughing out loud when you were drawing the coffee station and the two of you on the ladder. i don’t know why Anna thought it was a “scribble”. 😉 Good luck with the kitchen renovation, one of the most difficult rooms to design in a home. Loved everything about this episode--the kitchen plans, the amazing singing and playing of fellow Patreon Dr Kent and the mushroom harvesting and cooking! I just laughed so hard so many times, too! Phillip, that layout drawing!! Still has me chuckling. Best thing ever in a kitchen is two dishwashers! Makes clean up so easy! SO looking forward to hearing more in the near future as you get advice about the layout. Hope at the same time you can add a mudroom with storage for coats/scarves/gloves and shoes/boots storage. Makes it so nice to have a way to be organized with all of those necessities of life. Have a good week!
