Thank you Kale. I am 55, female, petite and have never had upper body strength. I keep looking for tricks to paddle stronger and......well, there are none. I live in the Big Island of Hawaii, where swells can come for a week but also leave for 2 weeks. It's very discouraging to think I might never get really surfing because I cannot paddle strong enough. I have considered powered motors on the board, but these are heavy and then you lose the ability all together? Hoping I will be able to do this, the water here is crystal clear and I love being out there no matter how silly I am. Something about just catching ANY wave keep me going. The whole family watches your videos. We turn on the TV and stream some Kales Broccoli, and we try to pop up while watching. I certainly entertain the family with my failed attempts!

You have Highlighted what i already knew i was doing wrong but you have Confirmed it if that makes sense. Don"t Look down at the Board for Answers but Down the Wave, Angle the Board Slightly and the Pause, don"t forget that there Pause, without the Pause it becomes a Rushed Affair. This all used to be a Natural Event for me but after a Back Injury and out of the Water for a While i'm now Starting from Scratch. I'll get there, i got there before so i will get there again. Once i'm on the Wave i Rip like the Good O'l Days.

"...there no way that that there is going to result in an informed decision..." is perhaps the best kindest critique I have ever heard a person give another, LOL. Essentially that is me there ( I flounder and learn slow), and that is why I am trying to relearn again as an old man long boarding after being young years ago on short boards. Thank you so much for the video.

Interesting watching the slo mo of your bottom turn. It's almost as if there are two turns there. The second boost turn gets into the power pocket. In real time it just looks like one bottom turn though. Will definitely be more aware of this potential action particularly on my backhand where I don't seem to have as much power on tap as my forehand. Thanks.

@2:40, when popping up on the foamie, for half a second your front knee is outside of your arm/elbow pushing up. I noticed on pictures of myself from last year I tend to do that (om small, hard to catch waves, at least) - and I thought I really need to do something about it... Do I? (I feel, maybe there is a risk of the front foot having to be readjusted after first ending up a bit of centre.) And if so, what?
@independentsurfer4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jens, so to help you with that you may need to twist your hips a little when popping up. this should help your knee slide through your arms nicely. To help with this, try and focus on catching a few waves on your front side and make sure your are looking down the line (with your head turned, your body will automatically try and twist as well) this is a little harder on your backhand so good to start with the forehand. hope this helps

Nice video man, those little details which makes the difference ! Even thou I surf quite a lot in the last 4 years, I often time end up with the white wash breaking in front of me. Important to mention that on small wave beach break it is so important to stay high up in the wave after take off, especially where we surf in the Northern beaches, the surfers who get the best wave can angle really well their take off to make the first section and build speed. Something I can manage fronthand but damn my backhand sucks, somehow I start to paddlee in an angle and when the wave carries me somehow my board goes back toward the beach and i automatically have the bad habit to look at my board when going backhand on take off. Hard to undo bad habits....

1. your client has his legs open when paddling which effects weight distribution when paddling into the wave, thats why he is struggling to get onto the wave. this also creates drag when paddling thus slowing him down. To be clear, it doesn't seem to be a positioning issue 2. your client has his chest way too low to the board, this doesn't allow for him to use his upper back muscles when trying to paddle as well as makes it harder to reach forward for each paddle stroke, this will also be one of the main causes why his pop up is struggling. 3. When your client is paddling for a wave, the main focus should be down the line, or at least looking up. For those of you who are still learning, where ever you look is where your gong to go. If you are looking down at your board chances are you are going to fall. 4. Because your clients awareness is down at the board, they are not lining themselves up with the wave, learning to catch waves is like learning to drive a car, when you learn to drive a car your awareness is left, right and behind you not down at the foot peddles. 5. When popping up, your client has his hands holding onto the rail of the board, this will automatically cause uneven weight distribution and is another reason why his board is going the wrong direction. 6. His hands are also a little far forward, which will make it hard to slide forward when popping up and cause his front foot to land way to far to the back of the board. He needs to shift his hands further back underneath his chest 7. because your client is looking down and his back isn't arched and his hands are to far forward on the board he doesn't create enough space between his hands and chest to bring his knee under his chest. Looking up helps arch his back, hands further back, under his chest makes sure he has straight arms and not at an angle which helps create enough space for the knee to come through. 8.Because he doesn't have enough space to bring his front knee forward, its causing his hips to raise really high in the air, this will then cause his feet to be close together, this results in bad weight distribution on the board when standing. This will also cause him to stand way to tall and keep him off balance when riding the wave
@madmaxmedia4 жыл бұрын
One thing I've learned is that 2 strokes at the right time and position on the wave can easily get you in and going, when 6-8 strokes at the wrong time and position still won't.

I’ve recently purchased a Swiss ball on your advice, and with some of your surf exercise videos I’ve been watching , i am now starting to get into the classic banana shape much more easily. biggest takeaway for me is looking at the extra little micro turn in the bottom turn. in my most recent surf I decided to focus on two basic things -> 1) legs closer together (front foot slightly turned out) 2) surfing rail to rail the first I have an issue with since I learned to surf with the bad habit of getting a really wide stance. Bringing my legs closer together seriously helped me get more power out of every movement. I could compress more in turns and stand taller on takeoff and through pumps. secondly, I started singing the rail to rail song while waiting in the backline - this helped me engrain those actions into my subconscious, before takeoff - funnily, one of the waves turned into an opportunity for a barrel, but I pumped straight through it with speed and power since that was my focus - barrel missed, but basic practice gained. Totally worth it. Thanks for the vids.

My biggest struggle or insecurity right now is popping up when a 4 to 6ft wave is about to break. In most cases, I end up loosing my balance for lack of commitment, nose diving or I wiping out. Any advice coach?
@matthewwetmore85264 жыл бұрын
Experience/time in the water are always the first thing. Truth is surfing isn't easy and the water confidence needed to perform on a solid swell is ridiculous. One theme I read in surf books a lot is focusing on fundamentals and confidence. Big (bigger) waves move fast and are scary at times. If you can surf small waves well you'll learn how to adapt but spending time in the ocean when the surf is up and figuring out how you can improve your wave reading/ocean navigation skills at different breaks I think will help a lot.
@KalesBroccoli4 жыл бұрын
Commitment! Also, take it in small steps. Start small then progress to bigger waves slowly :) Also, when you paddle fast you'll feel more confident! Work on that too!
@NicollasVerneck4 жыл бұрын
Felix Diaz practice pop ups everyday for 10 minutes inland with pillows under your board . Record yourself from different angles and try to see what can you improve . For waves that you are not comfortable try popping up while pulling the rail and stay tucked in . It makes the fall less daunting when you are tucked in
@independentsurfer4 жыл бұрын
watch your weight distribution, always keep your chest and head up off the board when paddling and be sure to angle your board if the waves are steep
@independentsurfer4 жыл бұрын
also watch your hand placement when pooping up, if your hands are too far forward your weight will be too far forward when popping up because you put most your the weight on the hands and arms.. Be sure to have your hands in the lower chest area when popping up

Hi! Thx for the videos, do helpful. So I live at a beach break and I’m a beginner intermediate surfer and I ride a 8’10. I struggle with paddling strong enough to get in the back and then the drop with this size board as the wave is fast and strong. My husband, who surfs really good, says a shorter board would not be helpful. I feel like I’m too far out to catch the long board wave and I cannot sit too far in bc it’s geared for the short boards. Any advice other than drive to a point break😊
