Hey Doc, just a quick tip...when I trim my bushes, I will take an old painters drop cloth, or old beach towels and lay them around the base of the shrubs. For me, it makes cleanup much easier. Love your videos, keep up the good work.

I'm a new gardener with some training and hands on as I go the last 3 years. I did a ball cut on a shrub. I've learned now from doc the boots cut. Thanks for that. I can relate your approach and since I don't do formal gardening and have a laid back make it look tidy but not perfect, I'm loving your approach.

One good tip ! Never drink when you trim bushes ! I’ve learned my lesson, have a drink after wards , great video

I do a cube shape first, then round-off the corners of the cube to make a sphere. By doing that I take care of the bulky and overgrown branches that get in my way in visualizing the final sphere and I establish a base-level size & shape before the final look. I just developed this technique on my own from years of cutting bushes/shrubs, but it works for me because it simplifies things. Also, like he said in the video, let the cutting blades do the work and don't force the blades into the bush when cutting. You want to slow-down when it comes to the final details and exact shape of whatever bush/shrub you're cutting to get the perfect look.

I use two big pieces of cardboard. I have a notch cut in the side of each to fit around the trunk. When I put them down they overlap a bit. Raking up is easy on the smooth surface of the cardboard. I use my leaf blower to blow the clippings out of the shrub before cleaning up.

I enjoy trimming them. It's like giving the garden a haircut. Looked outy window half done the little runway but still got a giant low crawling one. I thought leaving it naturalish but off the middle grass that goes up the middle of my well grown secret garden. Left as a legacy I don't want to damage it. I want to make it lovely so I'm learning from scratch and trial and error. I've only got rubbish big scissors but it still worked.

It's ironic that I just came home from a corporate building that we landscape designed years ago, and there are over 20 big boxwood same size as yours that I power trim the exact same way. There's also a lot of boxwood hedges, perhaps 120 linear feet of Green Mountain boxwood that I hedge. My problem is that the flat top boxwoods always brown out, and I don't know how to prevent this. Some say don't trim in the heat, others say only use sharp trimmers. Bull...its' more than that. I noticed that f the individual leaves get cut then it will brown out. Two days later the entire top is brown and looks terrible. I say, just wait, it will recover. In the meantime what can I do to prevent this??? Something I'm doing wrong?

Doc, you say you have to envision the shape you want and go for it. I’m not a pro but I absolutely agree. I think of it as icing a cake. You have your hard base layer (agressive cut) and then you put the gravy layer of icing on at the end (light cut) for finish appearance. That big ole hedge trimmer is like a spatula😃 great tutorial. I’m gonna try that booty cut though. Never tried it but will today
@virginia71253 жыл бұрын
That's how I normally trim my bushes. I have a couple with missing chunks. How do you fix that? Summer heat kills a section or something. I know to prune the dead out or it'll follow into the bush. I'm guessing with the dead out of the way, it'll slowly close up. Or should I do an aggressive cut during the cold seasons?

So now i am watching your video again, went to my local hardware store to buy a petrol hedger like yours. My only problem our are close to the picket spike fence, are the Bosh petrol mini hedgers any good. They cost more but are smaller. Any idea thanks

Keep your trimmer sharp, they usually die and fall off quick. I don’t hedge trim every week of bi weekly. I give it at least a month to push new growth out. I only see it in plants that get trimmed a lot.
