I'm sure I'm assuming and you know what they say about assuming lol. But I think its fascinating that you live in a high rise building, but you're a landscape architect. Pls dont answer if this is too personal of a question. I know landscape architecture is very broad where you're able to design beautiful garden spaces, parks and other public/private land. Do you own other property, with a large yard area, where you're able to build out your own personal landscaping? I've mentioned before that I adore your videos, but this one was great! I love that you were able to propagate clippings from the dying mother plant. I just bought a Krimson Queen today and I'm trying to find videos and suggestions on how to set up my new plant baby with some type of trellis. She around a 4" pot size and only has one tendril right now. Would you suggest letting her grow out a bit more before attaching the tendril to a small trellis?

Hi, there.Thanks for the questions. On living spaces- we owned 2 homes over 25 years; one was in Fort Lauderdale, (10 years that home/yard won an award) and our other home was in Miami Shores (15 years). We sold our last home in the Shores because I some personal medical issues (but im getting better now) and it was such a massive home that we felt it would be loved by a big family ,so we sold. We are now living vertically as we decide where our next home will be, and in the meanwhile I am doing a lot of gardening videos at my sister Amy's home in Ft Lauderdale. And That gives me the nature high from gardening with her, it's just such a joy. As to your question on the lovely Krimson Queen, please let her grow out more before setting up a trellis. And some great news about our mamma Krimson Queen that was dying, our pest treatment worked!! She is alive and thriving on that same black trellis! Thanks again for your interest. Cheers😀 🪴

It was fun to see your enthusiasm. I always post pictures of my new plants. How did the mealy bugs get onto the Hoya, if your Hoya was on a balcony?
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. That's a good question. My theory is that some mealy bug babies (they're hard to see) hitchhiked on another plant that I bought for my balcony. Thanks for the comment. 😀🪴

As I am following your instruction to grow my Crimson Queen in Leca, I took the plant from soil and accidently took off one leaf without a stem. Can I propagate that leaf with out a stem?

Hi there! Yes, you can change soil to help out your hoya. How is the lighting around the plant? You should have some growth in a year. Maybe light levels are low? 😀🪴

i recently bought me a krimson queen at the flower shop,, today i noticed some yellowish spots on some leaves and they told she was "burning" so i bought a fungicide and sprayed on her... im not sure if i should replant her in a new soil though since her current one is looking really compact 😰
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN2 ай бұрын
Hi there. Burning typically means she is getting too much sunlight, it can bleach the leaves. It might not be a fungal issue. Try also moving to a spot where she does not get any direst sunlight. Hope this helps. 😀🪴

Why do you not grow in water? Please do a video of growing Hoya in water or at least a comparison of water to soil. Do plants grow the same size in water as soil? I’m trying water but no growth shown yet but I’m not sure of the fertilizer and the amount. Thank you for all your videos. You are the BEST!!!!

Why is your green so beautifully light vibrant green but the one I bought the green is dark? The Hoya I bought has crème and pink but the green is a dark, dull green?can I use oil to shine the leafs? Thank you!!!!!!
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN2 жыл бұрын
Hi! It could be just a small variety of genetic difference. I have seen some trees leaves have widely different shapes ( Oaks /Black Olives) but they are the same species. So... It's probably just in her character to have dark leaves. And I would not use anything to shine your leaves other than a damp cloth (water with a very small amount of soap). 😀🪴

So you said that you submerged it completely in the mixture of alcohol, water and neem oil. What is the ratio that you use? I'm a big believer in dunking some of my things like succulents and such into 70% isopropyl alcohol with no water added but I've recently just found out that not everything can handle straight up alcohol. I had sprayed the 70% alcohol on my Swiss cheese monstera plans because I'm battling spider mites like crazy thanks to four peppermint plants from Amazon, and now all of my Swiss cheese leaves are yellowing. Not very rapidly but you can tell that they're all going to yellow up now. And I still don't think the spider mites are gone. I'm tempted just to cut it off at the stem and just reroot it and start over. Like dip it in a mixture of not straight alcohol just to make sure everything is gone and then start over. But then maybe I'll just unpot that one and do a dip anyways. But I'd love to know what your ratio is. Thank you!
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN2 жыл бұрын
Hi there. We had success with this procedure: start with a 5 gallon bucket or large container, get one that is big enough to place your entire plant inside. Then fill container with 3 gallons of water + 4 cups of 70% isopropyl alcohol (32 oz) + 3 cups neem oil (24 oz) + 1 table spoon of dawn dish soap. Mix solution together. Then submerge your entire plant for 1 hour min. Remove and wipe off leaves. You can use this sunk for more than one plant, but it will probably lose it's strength after 3 plant dunks.😀🪴

Do you dunk the whole thing soil and all into this mixture doesn’t the soil float up?
@madelaine32092 жыл бұрын
FYI. I’m rooting several Hoya in a glass with Leca and all but one are showing positive results. So, I took the one not showing root growth out of the glass and I found that there was too much soil attached to the roots still even though I washed the roots before putting in Leca. I tried to wash the roots again and still the soil was sticking to the roots. So, I got the most gentlest brush, kind of like a new born baby’s hair brush and ALL the soil finally came off the roots. I washed slowly and gently and with time the roots became all white, about 98% white. So, I put the roots back in Leca and I’m sure this one Hoya will show results like the others who roots washed off the soil easily from the beginning without a brush.
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN2 жыл бұрын
Hi Madelaine! Yes, you did everything perfectly. New roots should start within a month. And remember to flush the Leca occasionally to remove salt buildup.😀 🪴

I just received the princess...and I can't get it wet/ moist. It came bone dry!!! I don’t know what soil it's in...HELP!!!
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN Жыл бұрын
Hi, no worries, I got you covered. If you can, keep the soil it can supplied in (you don't want to disturb roots). Now, up-pot that plant into a larger container with this new soil ratio: 85% African violet potting +10% orchid mix + 5 worm castings and a tsp of mycorrhizae soil amendment. Your Princess Hoya roots will work their way into the new soil mix and be very happy. I did a plant care video on the princess hoya if you want all the details, here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJy4mWWbf7aafpY 😀🪴

My HKQ was throwing out new shoots and new leaves and then the whole plant started to turn yellow. No change in care of location. What happened?! Any chance the leaves will turn back to green or should I cut her up and start all over?
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I am sorry to hear that. Check the soil. Is it soggy? Does it have a sour smell?Yellow leaves in indicative of overwatering or poor drainage. You can take a cutting and root in water to save part of your Krimson Queen and on mother plant try replacing soil if you find that its a poorly drained mix. Hope this helps mend your hoya.😀🪴
@danamalament70402 жыл бұрын
@@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN Thank you so much for responding!!! She's in a terracotta planter with drainage and I always let her dry out between waterings. First it was only one "branch" so I cut that and have it in sphagnum moss (rooting and growing new leaves!), but then the rest started to look the same. All the new growth made me think she was happy so it was a surprise to see her green start to fade to yellow. :( I watered her yesterday (she was dry), but I don't smell anything funky. I was thinking maybe it wasn't enough light so I moved her to the opposite side of the house. She was in a SW facing window and is now (as of yesterday) in a NE facing window. Based on your response, though, maybe I have to chop her up if the leaves won't change back to green.

How long did it take you to get to that size Hoya from cuttings?
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN2 жыл бұрын
Hi! It took us about 1 year. Hoyas in general tend to be slower growing than other house plants but we were very happy with how she filled out and continues to grow😀🪴

Is the red/pink just a random variegation that can appear at any time or a result of being in direct sun? I have a lot of succulents that get a red tinge from being sun stressed, wondering if it's the same. I have a new Hoya CQ and it just put out a pink leaf close to it's grow light so I'm curious.
@LETSGROWGARDENDESIGN2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Our experience with our mother plant Hoya (outside facing north/ No direct sun) was that she developed red tinges on leaves from time to time, in random locations. The same for our interior Hoyas, they produces some red and white randomly. But you make a good point,in that increased sunlight is likely to trigger more variegation. Hope this was helpful. 😀🪴
