Thank you Anna! I'm so glad that I made this video as I was never able to grow that plant nearly as well ever again. It likes it extremely warm and humid to do well, and I can't easily provide those conditions any longer.

My plant is now about 2 1/2 years old, and up until recently never saw temps below 80°F day or night. It is good to know that it can take some cooler temps, as I now have it in the greenhouse where it is going to be much cooler.

Oh this is gorgeous! Lost mine last winter and after seeing this video I KNOW i have to have another! Thanks so much!

I'm glad that I have the video to remember it by, because I lost mine as well a couple of years ago. It just never wanted to grow well for me here in my new home. I think it did not like the hard water, but I would like to try it again now that I have R/O water to offer it.

That's a very good point as that's what we have too! I'll have to try it again with other options.

Doug I been following your advice and got good indoor lights and grow tenths for my hoyas and i have seen a dramatic improvement to all growth year round. I live in chicago and its pretty cold here half the year. I know this is an old video but would love your input or if you post a video about what hoyas dont do well in a grow tent with high humidity. I think most of us think of warm, high humidity with decent light as fix all hoya environment but im sure your long experience says otherwise. hope to hear your input. THANKS!!

Hi Adrian, It is a good topic and I will ponder it for a video. I have not had particularly good luck with H. calycina, magnifica, or the carnosa Hoyas in grow tents. Some plants will not flower in them because of not getting increasing, or decreasing day length like thomsonii, serpens, etc. 95% of Hoyas will do outstandingly well though in a warm, well lit, and humid grow tent!

It is all about the heat and humidity with this plant. I'm sure your plant will start growing like crazy for you soon!

@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Hi Doug, i love your videos, the old jazz that you’re using the spirit and the humor in the titles, like: ”Cat in window studios” :)… it’s a such a pleasure watching your videos, you are a true Hoya cultorologist (champion). Your obsession and love for this plants did a lot for this country. You’ve improved its all Hoya Flora, bringing new and unusual types. You deserve a Medal of Honor, showing us so many unusual blooms, which normally people wait for years to see in their homes. You Have My respect and admiration for bringing this Hoya encyclopedy. Can I ask you, do you have any videos about Hoya Carnosa ( the regular Hoya )? I want to hear your way of growing it and know your opinion on what it likes or dislikes. Thanks a lot.

@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas I believe that after you gave it away, you’ve realized that this was your actual most favorite plant over all ; bittersweet …

@@damiantk2707 Thank you for the kind words Damian. Hoya carnosa is the plant that got me hooked on growing Hoya. I had huge carnosa plants at one time, but it was in the era before I made videos. In the last few years, I have to say that I have not grown them well at all, and I think part of the problem was these darned flat mites that have plagued Hoya growers were causing me great grief with this plant. I think that H. carnosa is one of the Hoyas that is particularly susceptible to them. Whereas they used to grow effortlessly for me, they now had lots of failed growth points, deformed leaves and many leaves had corky areas on them. Since I started spraying with sulfur, the carnosa type Hoyas are starting to look so much better with some nice new shiny leaves. The only video that I have that shows a carnosa like Hoya is this one with H. crassifolia and H. motoskei, which many people call the first carnosas: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2jEiHmmqrd-esk Other than that, they love eastern windows, water when almost dry and up-pot when they need it. They should start flowering 2 years from a cutting and in 4 years will be huge and flowering profusely. At least that is how they use to grow for me.

Just got a one leaf cutting before watching this, if I can keep it living long enough to go outside it may stand a chance here in Douglasville GA. Very humid here. I'm wondering how much sun I can allow it to get. Is there any book you know of that tells what type of sun for each hoya? Great videos, thanks for sharing.
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas4 жыл бұрын
There is no book that I know of that tells how much sun for each Hoya, but keep in mind that most Hoyas are under-story plants and do very well with dappled sunlight. There are very few Hoyas that will take full sun for long periods of time. I started the megalaster that you saw in the video from a one leaf start so it can be done - best of luck to you!

I have this plant and it has 3 leaves and will not do anything for me. It just sits there. We are supposed to have some 90 degree days which I hope will help it.

Hi Doug! Hope you're well. I wanted to ask about the growing conditions you use for your megalaster. Mine has been in my indoor greenhouse with a sun light but I think it's too much light, because the leaves are very light. How do you mimic the deep shade this plant likes?
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas4 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephanie, I have not grown megalaster in a very long time. I unfortunately gave that magnificent plant away and haven't had it since. I can tell you that plant you see in the video was grown under very warm conditions never going below 80 degrees F even at night, and it was grown under T-5 fluorescent lights as I had no LEDs in those days. Also the humidity was extremely high mostly above 70%. These are extremely difficult conditions to provide in the home. Best of luck with your plant!

How old is your specimen? I found it to be one of the less heat-loving ones, as those normally don't stick with me for too long!

Ebay is a good place to find both common and rare Hoyas. Also, Gardino Nursery, Logees and The Violet Barn are good places. There is some risk but if you don't mind ordering from Thailand there is epiphytica.com and ahhoya.com

Hi How and where can I buy this hoya megalaster?
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas4 жыл бұрын
This is not an easy Hoya to find, it does not travel well either, so getting a good one from abroad will not be easy. I don't keep it any longer myself so I have none to offer. They do show up on eBay from time to time but expect to pay in the hundreds for a small plant.
