The song is basically a love letter to activists and activism. The official video is just Irish activists listening to the song on headphones and its pretty powerful. 'It's not the waking its the rising'. It's one thing to wake up and realise whats going on, its another to get out there and try to do something about it. There's an interview with Mavis and Hozier and he points out that any rights that people have been given weren't given freely, that they were always fought for.

I believe he was writing about singer Nina Simone who was also a civil rights activist. It’s designed to be an anthem, full of soul and motivation for the listener to make a difference in the world. Fighting for truth and justice is ongoing. Excellent recommendation!

He said it was a thank you note to all the artists mentioned who did protest music. It’s a hopeful song abt how ppl should be heartened that they could look to the past for inspiration & example. That ppl have gone thru what we’re going thru now & have made progress & music to drive it.

They all cried power "straight into the face that tells you to rattle your chains if you love being free..." All of them used the power of their words to question authority or oppression. "And I could cry power." It's calling us all to do something as well.

You should definitely listen to the whole of this album. It is bloody amazing. His band is just top class. I really think he is the best songwriter out there. The song is about all of the important artists who have fought for and talked about power and freedom and civil rights in their work/art, so Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Joni Mitchell, James Brown etc. He has actually said it is a 'thank you note to the spirit of protest'.

i think this song is a call to wake up and take up the fight against racism, sexism, ageism, disablism, and each and every form of marginalizing minorities. in the past few years, the ugly head of fascism and repression raised, and we will not allow it to overbear us all. stand up for your beliefs. you don't need to violent; you simply need to be stalwart and determined. our power is in our numbers. peace.

This song feels like an ode to performer’s who’s music inspired change and were speaking out for others. The line that really speaks to me, is “It’s not the waking, it’s the rising”. To me, it means that it’s not enough to just know there’s a problem. It’s about doing something, rising up.

It's an omage to protest music of the past. They do the clapping as a band live, actually he /they include a lot of clapping rhythms in his work.

It's not enough to know what's going on, you need to do something (It's not the waking, it's the rising). He then goes on to give a nod to a ton of musicians who used their music in protest and to push change. Mentioned off the top of my head - Nina Simone (multiple times because it's a call back to the lyric power in her "Sinnerman"), Billie Holiday, Joni Mitchell, James Brown, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, John Lennon, Curtis Mayfield, and of course, Mavis Staples who is singing as well. I know I'm missing quite a few. It's a great mix of honoring the past while calling on us to carry on - and actually do - the work.

I just finished bingeing your entire Hamilton and In the Heights playlist and now seeing you do Hozier?? Incredible! The song you were thinking of was Someone New, from the same album as Take Me to Church. Nina Cried Power is definitely more along the lines of a protest song (similar songs being: Jackboot Jump, Be, and But the Wages), as it calls out the names of several civil rights activists and is sung with Mavis Staples, an iconic singer and activist in her own right!

This song means fighting for what’s right. Lots of people featured in the official music video were part of the Irish referendum to repeal the 8th amendment of our constitution, which prevented women’s bodily autonomy and made abortion illegal in almost all cases. Many Irish women and pregnant people died because of it, and it only got overturned a few years ago, thanks to the activists in that video. That’s what this song means to me - the fight that hurts, but is worth it

I don't actually know what the song is about, because this is the first time I'm hearing it. So just off the top of my head, it seems to be talking about taking personal or individual power and being responsible with it. Rather than letting institutions, government, or things of that nature to take your power and then abuse it. That's just off the top of my head.

It hurts my soul how many reacts to this song say they're reactions from musicians, but the musicians don't seem to have a clue what the song is about, or who he's referencing. Like everyone's just reacting to the sound, and completely missing the point.

I hadn't seen your channel before and probably won't again. I'm sitting here thinking how can you NOT know what the hell they are singing about? Have you lived under a rock? Have you no concept of the civil rights movement and the entertainers who have helped drive it? Geez!

How do you not appear to understand this song, and at the same time pay attention to lots of irrelevant tiny details - interrupting the song only to comment on ephemera. Waste of all out time given what a great song/ performance you are supposed to be reviewing. Do some work dude.
