Exactly! If you've never experienced heartbreak in your entire life, it probably means that you never opened up yourself to love. Whether it's a lover, parent, sibling, friend, etc. Which also means you've probably never felt the warmth and joy that comes with the relationship. Because grief, especially when felt during the loss of a relationship, is just another form of love. All love is precious, and like all things, it ends.

I ended a very toxic friendship with my best friend last year. Over the past year I’ve tried to convince myself a thousand times that I did the right thing, but I’ve never believed it. I miss her like crazy and have a mountain of guilt for deciding to leave. Yet in the end I know I did the right thing bc we were drowning, one of us had to leave. This song has made me tear up all over again about it. It’s refreshing to hear that it’s okay to not erase the amount of love you have for this person. We had something special, we fucked it up and it’s okay. We did the best we could.

I feel you. Last year I had to drop a friend because he was very toxic. I loved him a lot and enjoyed the time spent for the most part. For a long time I was afraid of losing friends and of opening myself up to new relationships. A year later, I'm making lots of new friends, maintaining healthy boundaries and I now have my first girlfriend! My life now is the best it's ever been. I've learned a lot from that friendship, and I don't regret it anymore

That sounds awful. I've stopped talking altogether with a friend I had known for like more than 10 years. We used to talk everyday but gradually I started feeling like she didn't really enjoy talking with me anymore. I always was the one starting and trying to keep conversations going. I thought I was being paranoid but I stopped reaching out first and the result is that I actually haven't heard from her for a whole year. We didn't even fight or anything. Sometimes things just end for no specific reason. It's really weird and it hurts at first, but... at that point, when you find out things aren't working out, being able to let go is the best and only thing to do, I think. It doesn't mean that the feelings you shared should be forgotten, though. It was good until it lasted, I'll try to cherish the memories and move on.

Dear Hozier, I don't know if you are going to read this but I hope this message reaches you. I started listening to your music in 2018, with 'Like Real People Do' and I remember just bawling my eyes out, for almost three hours. 2018 was one of the worst years of my tiny life. But discovering your music was an weird kind of solace, I mean I don't know if it happens to anyone else, but your words felt like, those were meant for me, directed to me, just providing me with the exact amount of respite, not less, definitely not more, to carry on with life. I am a pretty cynical person myself and listening to your music, or rather trying to understand your lyrics, gives a sense of not being alone, of being in a world who ends up weaving poetry and music with what at times clouds my mind, someone who shares a similar stroke of cynicism. I really love to read, my goal in life is to be capable enough so that all I can do is read, listen to music and watch some good movies. With your music, I love how you hide literary references in your lyrics, I love how you borrow from Yeats, or Heaney or Kavanagh. So, dear Hozier, thank you for making me a better reader and more than that, thank you for keeping me alive. PS. Since you enjoy reading poetry, I urge you to read Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali, the prologue of which was written by Yeats himself. Happy Birthday! 🎉 May you continue to find your solace in music and let me find solace in what you create. - Sreya.(17/03/23).

This is the most beautiful and honest thing I’ve seen anywhere, written as comment. You are not alone, something so piercing Hozier’s music, speaks directly to your most sacred, invokes the long forgotten - this lifetime or the one’s lived before, depending on layers you hear. I was the same, I felt it being directed to me, describing what was, what’s to come. Besides, this new EP is the most interesting of all, as Hozier finally uses ‘I’ form, still galant in this, would start by describing a man, and only then mentions the contrast between self and that man. The true lover, the love he has for his ideal, and does not matter whether the person ever has put her sweet mind upon his deserving chest, at the end of the day, with comments like this, you justify how beautiful of manifest this music is; his genius is. Like you, I assumed it’s me, back then (actually, March 2018), still struggling but slowly, gradually, hopefully realising that it’s the Universal heart, unconscious made conscious Hozier’s music is, his lyric is. Just when I wanted to say thank you for the strong and vulnerable, in every ‘I’ of this EP, I realised that me, also, wishing that Hozier would read this, but with no ‘me’ in it; with purable (as clean but needs to be cleaner) love for it. This man will never be aware of the extent. I was in uni back in 2018, and had a module called ‘aliveness in arts’, after which I had a strong soul’s urge to follow my true self, find it, make love with it. In less than a week Universe delivered Hozier’s music, I still can’t remember how it all happened, but things have not been the same, ever/ this year I read somewhere that the phenomena of ‘true Self’ is also the same as spiritual growth, and mine is the balancing act between heaven and hell, moral and healing awfully ugly, faith in justice and judgment of failures (my own and those of society). And finally, wholeness through man, through woman - principles I carry within me. Hozier has dressed so many people, he will never know how this is possible; how he beats the demons out, breaks, cracks us open, just be describing that tear, his own balancing act. Is it calling? Ps Perhaps you could think of Hozier’s voice and music, and realise that he had opened another level of understanding, dimension, gateway, like your ears and heart, and that through listening to this genius, you open the genius in oneself. Oh but that genius is you, your true, essential, simple, soul, the gateway to the world, for Hozier, the gateway to God, for some! It’s funny how I started this morning and am finishing the day with this tune, miraculously, as ringing in my mind, from spirit, saying, please, please… listen and find another layer until you find the gem, that is, your own wisdom, activated, maybe also in him. Love

May you always be the one, as musical muse, as this world becomes your love. Love on, from a bottom of a unconditional, I say! I hope you feel the same void, same I do, painted somewhere between music and the never fulfilling love for the man in music. I hope you live, live like that, like the most beautiful pain, loving Hozier in arts knowing that he is that. crave yourself also, because he would have craved the dream that's (always) out of reach, something so tangible as paradise and something so distant as Earth. I used to think Shrike was a song for me, for the amount of soul listening I gave to the man, in terms of Spotify listen amount. only now I am slowly realising that that art could not fit; that wasn't my story, became lost, without story, and urging surge for another true self emerged. According to John, just before He mentions Andrew, there is Jesus asking: what ye seek? Search for or wait, its all the same, its the divine for those who, with major complexity, arrive at simplicity, and seek again. ps people like you should always know that it is you, essentially, what Hozier created, its so individual in collective my heart breaks i cannot see your divination in art, your music or service, your dress when you go to the park and it rings bells… Lost and found and lost again. This is the longest comment i will ever write ❤ but I am glad you have found literature that speaks to you…Just as I found something so mine. be that giving, be that straw blonde, be that image in your mind when you heard him sing, be the one who found Hozier just after his mid-youth, and be, merciful and sweet, be as you have always been, you'll be the one goddess, careless and free, the life craves to see. Thank you

@@LondonMageMuse You have expressed the whole oxymoronic existence of the versions of 'me'/ 'I' in Hozier's lyrics so well. Honestly I do love the subtle tons of hopeful despair in his music, he realises the shitty situation of the worldly affairs, the fallacies of the human characters and yet he us hopeful for the infinite possible possibilities. In his earlier released album, in the song, NFWMB, he visualises his lover as being the ultimate powerful being, who just by her existence can postpone the end of the world, by whose sheer presence the destroyer who was slowly creeping towards Bethlehem to be born, changes their course, so he epitomises his lover as the one who transcends even the destroyer of the worlds yet assures to love her despite her positive het negative prowess. The whole, 'Give your heart and soul to charity 'Cause the rest of you The best of you Honey, belongs to me'....... I am sure there existed wonderful lyricists or even better ones of whom I am yet to get acquainted with, but I am in love with the depth of Hozier's works.

@@LondonMageMuse thank you so much. @@sreyapaul26 The pillars of fire, ascending from the vast depths of waters; the flame like selfless ambition, waters - purified and full. [Verse 1] A two-tonne weight around my chest feels like It just dropped a twenty-storey height If there was anyone to ever get through this life With their heart still intact, they didn't do it right The last time I felt your weight on my chest, you said "We didn't get it right but, love, we did our best" [Pre-Chorus] And we will again Moving on in time and taking more from Everything that ends [Chorus] And all things end All that we intend is scrawled in sand And slips right through our hands And just knowing That everything will end Should not change our plans When wе begin again [Post-Chorus] We begin again, hmm-mm [Verse 2] I havе never known a silence like the one fallen here Never watched my future darken in a single tear I know we want this to go easy by being somebody's fault But we've gone long enough to know this isn't what we want And that isn't always bad [Pre-Chorus] When people say that something is forever Either way, it ends [Chorus] And all things end All that we intend is scrawled in sand Or slips right through our hands And just knowing That everything will end We should not change our plans When we begin again [Bridge] We begin again We begin again, hm-mm Darling [Chorus] And all things end All that we intend is built on sand Slips right through our hands And just knowing That everything will end Won't change our plans When we begin again [Outro] And all things end (Knowing we can always start again) All that we intend (Knowing we have another day) Is scrawled in sand (Knowing we can always start again) Or slips right through our hands (Knowing we have another day) And just knowing (Knowing we can always start again) That everything will end Should not change our plans When we begin again

I don’t know how but he captured my childhood memories. My parents would play R&B stations while my brother and I fell asleep in the back seat on long trips. The hymn vibes take me to church (no pun intended) listening to my dad and grandpa line hymnals during service and the choir would finish the song.

Thank you this song is absolutely stunning. Not only does it captures the essence of Hozier’s musical genius it also portrays his ability to create songs that are both profound and beautiful. I love how he uses his voice and his words to convey the emotions of the narrator, who has experienced a heartbreaking separation but also a hopeful renewal. The other day a friend of mine disagreed with me about Hozier's music not being haunting and now I see how - It’s haunting, but in a good way. It’s deep and meaningful and beautiful. It makes me feel things that other music can’t. Life is complex and diverse and unpredictable. Life has its dark sides as well as its bright sides. Life has its beauty as well as its horror. He doesn’t ignore the horror. He acknowledges it, he confronts it, he challenges it, he transcends it, by finding beauty in the horror, by finding hope in the despair, by finding light in the darkness. He makes me feel every nuance of their pain, their acceptance, their gratitude and their optimism. He also makes me admire their courage and their wisdom in facing the reality of life and love. This song is a masterpiece of lyrical poetry and soulful melody. It touches my heart and lifts my spirit. I can’t get enough of it. Thank you again, it really is very beautiful.

I have listened to this song so, so much since it dropped. My favorite of this single by far! The bittersweet hope, the acknowledgement sometimes it isn't anybody's fault, the choral vocals with the backing track dropping out at the end. Sublime.

This came at the right time. I’ve had to suddenly move out of my apartment due to flooding, all while adjusting to a new job and figuring out some personal health issues. But the love of my life is by my side, and our cat is safe. We have so many loved ones helping us too. Nothing is permanent but it just makes the things that matter that much more precious. Stay safe and keep your loved ones so so close, everyone 💜🎵

This is giving me so many 80s R&B vibes. I wish he would talk us through each track with his thoughts and inspirations like he used to 💚 All of these new songs have such a haunting, slow burn element. I love them more and more with each listen.

I know it's primarily a love song, but this song gives me so much comfort when I'm down, and it makes me feel grateful for things when they are going okay. It's my favourite song because after several failures, it gives me a lot of hope.

"If there was anyone to ever get through this life with their heart still intact, they didn't do it right," has a soothing, reassuring quality. I often wonder who hasn't been heartbroken in one direction, traumatized in another, betrayed from the blindside or damn, rode hard and put away wet. Hozier, I believe the way you take that which hurts and shape the passing pain into something beautiful is spectacular. Most excellent, Hozier. Most excellent.

most hozier songs make me feel like i'm in a forest cottage or a rowdy but warm country tavern but this one makes me feel alone in a high-rise apartment, overlooking a dark city skyline, rain beating on my window, two glasses poured but only one drunk.. and it's the 1990's.
