I think the pain of loss is the price for love, I'm only realising that now. A fair price perhaps, but a costly suffering comes in the end for many of us. I was so lucky to have a love like that, even if it costs me dearly now. Its a very very lucky person who gets to love for free.

The warped fantasy you create about them, the dreadful longing, the searing joy of feeling loved back, the pain of feeling fundamentally misunderstood/unseen, and the ultimate betrayal that shatters the illusion. I’ve never heard this experience articulated so beautifully. And I can’t help but appreciate the lovely irony of a song about feeling unknown making you feel so seen and understood. Once again, this man has me blown away and lying in a puddle of tears.

I know this is about a relationship ending, but that line 'so much of the living, love, is the being unknown' really hits me. I've thought before the real thing about loneliness isn't physically being alone, it's the feeling that nobody truly knows the heart of you. That's why you can feel entirely alone surrounded by even friends and family. That private, most vulnerable part of you being walled up is all it takes to feel alone anywhere, anytime. I really can't imagine what it's like to actually let yourself be known by somebody, and then lose that. Must be worse than never being known in the first place.
@kenmathewrepolda1542 Жыл бұрын
The phrase "If only they knew" will keep popping up in your head as you feel isolated from everyone else. Personally, for me, it's the possibility of being rejected when they end up knowing who you really are, that when the unknown becomes known you won't be accepted as who you are.
@sasson1646 Жыл бұрын
That's why discovering the spiritual dimension to life is important. It gives meaning to everything. Discover your own heart first, then you can properly be in a relationship with someone else.

I truly think someone thinking of you as an "angel" or calling you an angel because they perceive you that way, is one of the purest and most beautiful forms of love. I can never get over Hozier's lyrics, every time I think he cannot get any more poetic and gentle spoken, he does. These kinds of words can only come from a person who experiences love as maybe the grandest and most beautifully consuming thing, that is the very core of life, so listening to his songs is like experiencing life through his lenses, and that's such an honor

For anyone else who likes to read the lyrics a bit more slowly: LYRICS: [Verse 1] You know the distance never made a difference to me I swam a lake of fire, I'd have walked across the floor of any sea Ignored the vastness between all that can be seen And all that we believe So I thought you were like an angel to me [Verse 2] Funny how true colors shine in darkness and in secrecy If there were scarlet flags, they washed out in the mind of mе Where a blindin' light shone on you еvery night And either side of my sleep Where you were held frozen like an angel to me [Chorus] It ain't the being alone (Sha-la-la) It ain't the empty home, baby (Sha-la-la) You know I'm good on my own (Sha-la-la) Sha-la-la, baby, you know, it's more the being unknown So much of the livin', love, is the being unknown [Verse 3] You called me angel for the first time, my heart leapt from me You smile now, I can see its pieces still stuck in your teeth And what's left of it, I listen to it tick Every tedious beat Going unknown as any angel to me [Bridge] Do you know I could break beneath the weight? Of the goodness, love, I still carry for you That I'd walk so far just to take The injury of finally knowin' you [Chorus] It ain't the being alone (Sha-la-la) It ain't the empty home, baby (Sha-la-la) You know I'm good on my own (Sha-la-la) Sha-la-la, baby, you know, it's more the being unknown And there are some people, love, who are better unknown

I love the versatility of your poetic tongue and how you play with words. It seems so much deeper and potent. From the moment the song started, I just knew that I would fall in love

The lyrics of this song are so beautiful that they almost heal the pain they remind me of.

This has been on a loop for 3 days and each listen is more effortlessly breath taking than the last. His voice, the harmony with himself. The guitar, the words. A true artist. He never ceases to amaze me with his control over emotions and articulating them in such a universal way. It’s a love song but it’s also so much more than that. A beautiful ballad. Anyway, Hozier this is me proposing to you

In the hands of a poet, 'red flags' turn into scarlet ones :) Yet another gem, this one.

I think this one will probably end up being my favorite off the album, I don’t know how he could beat it:)

There is something just so intimate about this song, not even about romantic love but how someone can feel so strongly about another individual no matter where they are they'll do anything to be with them

“That I’d walk so far just to take…the injury of finally knowing you”. This melody, the lyrics have found a place to live on me…permanently! This verse is beautifully written. Every single track on this album has left it’s mark. All of this music changes me on a chemical level. Thank you for that Hozier. The truth is, ALL of your music, for the last 10 years, has gifted me this. Again, Thank You Hozier. See you in San Fran in October!!

You've put this so well. He is truly gifted in every sense. How he knits such powerfully beautiful, heart wrenching words together. I've got a constant knot in my throat listening to him.

This is the sort of song that is just perfection when played live, it feels like it was made to be played live

this song helped me get through my first ever break up way back in September, I used to listen to it every night without failure to help me sleep without a clouded mind. It is super bitter sweet to see the studio version finally released, but I'll forever love this song for what it helped me in. ♥

The whole Unreal Unearth album is incredible and I can't get enough of it, but this is my favourite song. There's something so raw and visceral and real about it. It feels like Hozier finally found the words I'd been looking for myself for such a long time, and, within that, is the peace of finally knowing and understanding experiences that feel like this. Beautifully and masterfully done!

I love this man and his ability to pull pain from my heart by expressing in poetry and melody what I could not voice in my own words. When I first heard this I was in the subway and had to pull myself together. The catharsis was too much.

Experienced this song live last night, and I was so incredibly overcome with emotion, it took everything in me not to just breakdown and cry. Once in a lifetime.. Those feelings are so rare for me anymore. I am still just in awe ✨

I don't know what it is about this song that somehow loosens one finger of the anxiety that's been strangling me forever, but I'm grateful for the first breath of air for as long as it lasts. Thanks for the oasis that is your music.
