I took a HP 290-p0043w SLIM, upgraded the CPU to an i7-8700 for $80, slapped 2x8 2666 Ram kit already had. Didn't perform like I wanted it to on the IGPU, so i bought an RX580 off amazon for $99 (NEW). had to use a PCIE riser cable, & ordered 2 additional plugs to split the MINI 8 pin power between the HDD & GPU. The GPU is sitting outside the case at this current moment but man I'm shocked at how good this thing runs games @1080P I was worried about the power supply not being big enough but so far so good. My youngest son is using it to play Fortnite, Roblox & Warzone.

Hi there. Are you able to boot up the OS system with the NVME M.2 SSD? Assuming it has been cloned with the HDD and allocated in the computer management settings?

Aloha, I am just watching this video again...and since I have done this one I have learned quite a bit about doing these, this video is missing a lot of userful information. I also looked at my other HP videos, none of them really do a step by step walk thru. I also can't remember exactly how I got the OS working on this computer and with me in Hawaii...it sits back inf Virginia. So that said, here are the 3 techniques I would try....and they may not all work to get this up an running: 1) Buy a Samsung EVO 970 and use their migration software to copy the HDD to the NVME. Once complete, remove the HDD. You may have some BIOS settings to adjust. 2) Install Windows from USB on to NVME. You may have to do boot priority changes to get it to boot to thumb drive for installation. You would then have to download drivers. Make sure to install the same version of Windows that is on the computer so you keep your license. 3) HP usually has recovery file that can be downloaded to USB...and this might be best route: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06162205

Stock fan speed around 850 rpm and bios has no options to regulate that. So only one way to make cooler silent is to buy other 80mm low-rpm fan, right?

Great video, I'm so disappointed in this computer all I wanted to do was edit video footage as easily as I used to do on my 2011 hp desk top. It seems I was able to do so much more on something that cost me about the same in price.

what Generation icore processors does this 290 can support? Is 32 g of ram accurate?

Hello, these are 8th gen. That said, I did make a video putting in an I3-9100. I would have to go back and look, but I believe I did it without updating the bios first to see if it worked. Best thing would be to update the BIOS...than change to 9th gen CPU's. Being a 300 series motherboard, it should support 32GB of RAM (2x16GB).

Is there any suggestions you have on getting a more powerful PSU?
@PC_HardwareTechUnboxing_1
@PC_HardwareTechUnboxing_1 Жыл бұрын
You could probably find one on eBay that would be more powerful..the problem is it won't fit in the case. If you take the motherboard out..you could probably get a psu that would power a 6 or 8 pin PCIE GPU. Or keep it in..and use a PCIE ribbon extender.

Can you put the motherboard and components in another case with a stronger power supply? So you can upgrade the gpu. Or will the 4 pin motherboard be an issue?
@PC_HardwareTechUnboxing_1
@PC_HardwareTechUnboxing_1 Жыл бұрын
Lots of issues with that..as I attempted with Dell 3670. Mostly same issues. For that..I had to find 24 to 8 pin adapter. You would need 24 pin to 4 or to find a bigger HP one..possibly 300 or 400 watt 4 pin should exist. After removing motherboard you will find the hole pattern doesn't match up. Nor will most likely USB/ IO portion. You may find it easier to not even put in a case. Have motherboard sit on rubber mat.

I can't say I did extended testing, but I did power up a RX 460 in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpeanat7ftpkr5I Either graphics card draws up to 75W as that is the max you can get without GPU 6 or 8 pin connectors. That said, there is not a lot of power left over when you add the CPU and GPU. I believe the TDP for Celeron 54W vs I5-8400 63W . I have not really looked into whether there are any PSU upgrades for this. I have upgraded quite a few HP/Dell computers for the channel...but have not messed with that one. $165 was for a refurbed GTX 1050? That seems high...you should be able to get a GTX 1650 (no gpu connectors) for that price. But same issues as I had...would need PCIE reibbon extender.

That's a good question. All the 300 series motherboards (OEM's probably use a B360 or H310 chipset) would appear to have some basic compatibility with 9th gen chips. This does not mean that an I9-9900k would be a good match for this little small form factor desktop, but it would appear the I3-9100, I3-9400, I5-9600 and I7-9700 should work as the 8th gen equivalent works. Of course, without having those chips I can not say for certain. Your Dell's, HP, Acer's, Lenovo's...etc don't really like to advertise the 8th gen CPU's they build as being compatible with 9th gen. chips. As the more you can upgrade those units...the less you buy. Its bad for business. When I was checking out my HP Envy, I noticed they had said in the bios revisions that it now supported 9th gen chips. That lead me to use my other experience from this channel of checking motherboards with old bios comparability. It turns out that the 3 OEM computers (Dell Inspiron 3670, HP Evny, HP 290) that we have here all had some basic comparability, meaning they booted up and ran all the programs without issue. Now, are there lines of code that they are probably missing....I would think YES.

Hello, a few over the years in Computer Aided Design type workstation...never for gaming and the best this desktop has seen out of my CPU collection was probably this one. The I5-9400f and I7-9700f are not a good match for this desktop without the right GPU.

From all of my research I have done on the web Amd cpu's are better then intel. Is there a reason you are useing intel like the computer doesnt support it ??? maybe im missing something. If you have already covered this im sorry. Also you said i can replace the power supply with an external im a complete novice at this how would i go about doing that??? (Also im sorry for all the questions)
@PC_HardwareTechUnboxing_1

No problem...questions always welcome. I think whether AMD is better than Intel or vice versa is completely dependent on what you are doing with it..and then factoring cost/value. It is one of those subjects that most people will agree to disagree. I would like to one day get another AMD CPU. But it wouldn't be for gaming, it would be to take advantage of the Multi-Core performance for some of my more intensive programs. I have never worked on the AMD versions of these desktops, but I can imagine it is quite similar to my findings. The most common issue with PSU replacement is that Dell's need an 8 pint connector and they have a fan that blows out of the case with no vent in the bottom. To make most of the PSU options work you need a 24 pin to 8 pin adapter (another link in my other videos) Your available PSU options would be: 1) Upgrade from 290W to 365W...available on Ebay and Amazon. In one of my videos I have the exact part number. What do you gain? Not a whole lot.still no 6 pin GPU connector. There is also one that was in Asus Computers that would work with an adapter. Fan blows out of the case. 2) Buy a PSU that has dual fans...there was an Apevia PSU that I looked at...that has dual fans. One fan would blow into the case. You could create your own vents 3) Keep the PSU external...this is rather ugly as the wires would run through the back of the case where the PSU has been removed. 4) Put a PSU in the case upside down and don't bolt it in...since bolt pattern won't match. 5) There exists somewhere a PSU with amounting plate. This gives you the ability to use existing holes with a PSU where the fan is blowing into the motherboard. Hopefully, that about sums up the PSU issues...and alternatives.

I have since sold the HP 290 and though I have about 30 GPUs...I don't have one of those. You may be able to use a PCIE extender ribbon which means having the GPU outside the case. I believe I did something like that on this channel with a GTX 1050.
