Sorin - this video inspired me to go back and work on a laptop that I had worked on previously. This HP laptop had a bad display cable - I replaced the cable, all was working perfectly then a couple of days later the laptop just stopped. It acted completely dead just like the one in your video. Charge light was on, turned orange when the battery was installed. Really a sinking feeling when something stops like that after you worked on it! Well I discovered I made a mistake also! I didn't fully seat the power button cable in the motherboard socket. It was only in the socket part way which was apparently enough for it to work for a few days. I plugged the cable all the way in to the "line" and all is working perfectly again. I was very happy I didn't have to take the laptop all the way apart again! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the world and being an inspiration to fix things that are broken!

Thank you Sorin. I am now going to check this on my IBM ThinkPad T60 which just shut off one day, and will not restart. I replaced cmos bat., charger, tested the ram, even replaced the motherboard. Still won't turn on. I have 20 volts at the motherboard connector pin but, that is all I checked...I never checked for voltage or short on the center pin which I will do right now. I always learn something from your videos. Thank you.

Hello Sorin, I watch your videos regularly and I like your work a lot. I would like to point out some additional findings I have got regarding this issue. Sometimes, without the middle pin connection especially in DELL and HP, the battery will not charge and the laptop will perform extremely slow because it does not allow the CPU to reach its full clock speed. It typically makes the CPU operate at 800 MHz to 1 GHz. In some of the HP laptops, I have seen them to not power on at all without the middle pin.

I had a similar problem with an universal power supply by trust. The plug for HP fried TWO TIMES the SuperIO chip, because it had the middle pin connected to +19V. Long story short, I had to change it 3 times before figuring out what was the problem. And all this because the customer didn't bring his power supply together with the laptop. I modified the plug of the universal power supply with a resistor on the middle pin, and now it works safely. HP are not all the same. Some tolerates 19V on middle pin, some doesn't start, some just get broken.

I'm not a fan of these new PSU "DRM" connections. You should look at that line with an oscilloscope, if you have time for a lesson. Many of these new laptops and PSUs have a onewire dataline, and it checks if it is a charger from the manufacturer. That's how some Dell's can tell they have a "Non-Genuine Charger". It's like the apple way of doing things, and locking down the parts with a code. End result, a captive market, and more expense for the consumer.
@jxmai76875 жыл бұрын
Also the problem is those charger hard to find even in ebay.

HP genuine replacement charger direct from manufacturer is cheap. The ebay fakes are actually dangerous. Many contain no protection and can cause fire. Ignore any power supply that has wording like "replacement AC adaptor". Watchdog in UK covered this some time ago. Also often come with an unfused plug (UK) and fake CE markings
@lesleymunro49644 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmcdonald2348 Genuine chargers are not cheap. Although that does depend on which income bracket you are on. Might be cheap to High value employees in the USA, Not so much to minimum wage workers in the UK, or worse, Poverty stricken Indian or chinese people. "Cheap" to you, could be a year of saving to other folk. As for protection and fire risk, you are right, there are many dangerous supplies out there, and I think everyone knows now that the CE marks are meaningless, especially from china. But this doesn't mean all of them are dangerous. There are actually some good Chinese PSU manufacturers, who use quality components, and sound design. But the difficulty is finding them. Buying manufacturer supplies is easier, but aftermarket supplies can work for people not as well off, and willing to do a bit of research.

That is why with those laptops that have a DC plug with cable to replace the DC plug + cable set, and you can buy them already soldered from factory, just needs to plug in. And it is not that expensive.

Really thank you for your kindly explain. So at this time I really wonder that the reason why hp, lenovo,dell using a middle pin in charging port? What is the middle pin 's function in this laptop?
@paulodagraca34695 жыл бұрын
The function of the 'extra' pin in the middle is to sense the voltage delivered to the laptop (inside the laptop). So normally the power supply adaptor will supply the 19.0 volt for the laptop, however cables are not perfect and connectors are sometimes dirty and all this will result in resistance and so loss of voltage to the laptop. As example, It can happen that the laptop will have only 18.6 volt not 19.0 volt. Some power supply adaptors will always output 19.5 volt as compansation. Better would be to make sure voltage is always 19.0 volt inside the laptop and not inside the power supply adaptor. This is where the middle PIN is used. It will connect internal in the laptop to the power rail en sense the voltage. If the voltage is too high or low it will pass this back to the power supply adaptor and it will compansate it back to exacly 19.0 volt (inside the laptop). Also cable breaks or short in power, all can be detected and be used to control the power to the laptop, so laptop will not die. Not all brands will have the same functions, they can have under-voltage protection or over-voltage protection or cable break protection, things like this. It is also feeding this signal to the super IO for information to controll the voltage and shut down if it is not okay. Also here not all laptops are the same, on how they have this connected. Where some are sensitive and others are olmost bulletproof. Hope this does help you understand the middle pin.

@@paulodagraca3469i dont understand the problem and solution.. the middle pin is missing 19v so he make a jumper to the other pin with supply 19v?
@paulodagraca34692 жыл бұрын
@Ysabella Sorin has changed/repair the power connector on the laptop. Doing this work he has made some mistake to 'short' the wire of the plus and middle pin of the connector. In this case the HP laptop will check the voltage/data on the middle pin as protection. Because the middle pin was connected to the + (19.0 volt) of the power supply, the internal check in the laptop was wrong. The HP laptop did not want to start because of bad test (protection). Later in the video Sorin has corrected the problem, where he soldered the wire correct to the middle pin, and removed the short to the + of the power. Now the laptop started to work fine. This video was to show what can go wrong if you repair the power supply connector. Also Sorin wanted to inform people about this middle pin and that multiple brands now use this type of check pin (middle pin). This middle pin is not always connected in the same way by all the laptop brands, but they all use it as some check/test for the power supply. Hope this helps you understand 😉

Regarding to your camera freezing, the cable, data or power cable is possible broken somewhere and cause a power or signal missing time to time or the port where is connected or the power rail of the pc, I have had similar issue with my usb wireless mouse glitch and saw similar monitor issues what you cant measure I think, hope this is helpful in some way. 😊

So it does not kill the super io chip, it stops the machine turning on. At least its better than a dead super io chip :-D
@robbirobson73304 жыл бұрын
it depends on the design, sometimes it also stops charging but powering on fine but its not detecting the type of adaptor. sometimes some diode or resistors are in the way that can be burned. i also came accross broken trace to super io and that was the reason for not charging, sometimes you just need to run a jump wire then from the middle pin to io. also a resistor in the line has gone up in resistance or broke completely
