Greetings from the US (Wisconsin to be exact), excellent videos, thank you for the uploads... Ive got one of these as my daily driver, i swapped out the stock procs for a pair of matched x5670s, its got 72GB RAM and a couple of ssds for OS and raided 10k rpm sas drives for data storage, add to that an nvidia GTX1070 plugged into the x16 PCIE slot... makes for great video rendering as well as daily usage...
@ExposingUSC6 жыл бұрын
also, ive got it running windows 10 pro with no problems at all, very stable system, runs 24/7
@ExposingUSC6 жыл бұрын
BTW, i had to use a PCIE extension ribbon and place the GTX1070 on the outside of the server due to the double wide configuration, also needed to hook up an external power supply to power the GPU... and SSDs that i put on a PCIe sata raid controller... isnt really pretty but it works very well...

Your review convinced me to grab up a few from eBay. Ty! Couple items I've noticed: 1) Even cheaper now (in 2018). B/w $100-$200, incl shipping (these are still heavy, 50-60lbs, but I couldn't find any local). 2) Memory is expensive! ($25 / 4GiB in 2018) Assuming folks stick with enterprise server-class memory (ECC RDIMMs). 3) ILO = huge time saver: remote console over IP, remote power mgmt, & HP site has trial license to enable it. No more console/serial switching. 4) P410i array = onboard controller can drive 8 disks over 2 SATA channels, so no extra controller needed; its cache is firmware configurable for reads/writes & uses the battery 5) BIOS update is a pain = HP paywalls the motherboard BIOS via their SPP, and stopped including the Gen6 updates in their latest SPP, only component firmware (disk array, NIC, etc.) is free to download. Luckily I found an open FTP that had had the older SPP ISO. 6) It's quiet! w/ the right power settings, there's no overcooling or running hot. Evidently HP's "Sea of Sensors" helps here, assuming folks configure power mgmt right in BIOS & OS.

My PlayHouse It came with only 1 cpu, X5660 and 48GB ram. 8 x 146GB Sas drives and the raidcontroller with installed license and battery -thing. Noticable is that cpu/ram/drives are brandnew! The old cpu/ram i got also with it, so if anything dies i got some spare parts. Of course it is huge overkill for a newbie like me, but hey, it was an offer i couldn't resist.

You could probably still use that SAS power connector for GPU or whatever else...just have to build an adapter. I did so on the 8-pin SAS backplane power connector on my DL360 G5's, and works great. Just used a multimeter to find the pinout on the connector to find 12V and ground, and added an inline molex connector. I am currently working on the 6-pin fan connector pinouts in order to reduce fan noise or remove / swap them out.

I just bought (ebay) three DL380 G6's to our company. Each server has two X5675's and 144GB ram. Then i installed four Intel 910 800GB SSD cards, two per one server and third (backup server) has 10 Western digital RED 2,5" HDD's. Intel 910's doesn't have hardware raid enabled but i flashed them with LSI firmware. Now those SSD cards works with VMware esxi. Esxi's are installed on Sandisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD cards on motherboards. Now when i check how much cpu, memory and SSD resources i have left, these are total overkill for our needs. Two servers without HDD draws about 200W power and the one with HDD's, about 300W. I also bought vSphere essentials license so i can have vCenter.

I picked up one of these servers from savemyserver for about 200 bucks. 2x x5650 CPU 48 gigs of the ECC and 2 sas drives in raid. Been having issues with the limited 120Gb space. So went and purchased a 4TB enterprise sata. Not sure how to hook it up so I also got myself the CD rom pack. had to buy the sata rom cable seperate. May expand my sata drive on the cd rom slot. Server is just for hosting games like 7 days, rust ect ect with my nefews. It was the CD rom (inside connection) part he kinda threw off that helped me figure out what wire I had to order, thank you.

Great video of a great server. The Proliants are built like tanks, atleast up to G7. Took at work out of service a DL380 G3 three days ago and have still two G4 running non critical tasks, but they will be retired soon. Also have some G5 and G6 that can stay in the racks till they cant run anymore. Windows 2016 runs just fine on those old irons and spare parts are cheap on eBay. For critical tasks G8-G9 bladeservers runs Hyper-V.
@MyPlayHouse7 жыл бұрын
Hi Retromaniac Thank You very much! The power consumption vs. performance makes it a bad deal to have older servers running for any 24/7 work load,,, like a G3 / G4 can run very fine on a corner of a G8 / G9 Thank you for watching! :-)
@retromaniac45637 жыл бұрын
Yes power consumption is bad on those oldies, but performance is sometime more than enough even for almost a decade old server depending on the task. Anyway the hot running netburst based Xeons really sucks and i remember we replaced some ML370 G2 (dual PIII 1266mhz Tualatins) with the DL380 G3 with dual Xeon 2.4ghz. The performance didnt improve much on the Citrix terminal server farm they ran. We have come a long way since then and sometimes i almost feel bad retiring those reliable workhorses:)

I have no ram and no pci riser cards but it is dual with hex core 5650 so quite powerful. I know very little about servers and was hoping you might be able to lead me in the right direction. Is it possible to run normal desktop windows on this or do I need some special software key or some other trick? I was hoping I might be able to use it for video editing and even general day to day use with some games ect. Do i need the pci riser card for graphics card or can I just plug in to the motherboard directly and find some power somewhere? Hi Viktor Madarasz I am afraid that I am not so familiar with HP's models. But generally, there's just a little more space in a 2U server. More HD bays, offen a better raid controller, better cooling, more PCI slots. But ,,yarr very offen you doun´t realy need those things,, and then a 1U server is perfekt and very space efficient. Thank you for watching! :-)

yew you are right.we think we need the biggest and newest..and sometimes like you said a simple 1u unit not even the newest gen would do just fine.i like the videos as i wish i could have a playhouse or even just a basement full with stuff jeje

Hi Viktor Madarasz It's all about getting the best value for money,, both in terms of servers and houses. MyPlayHouse is located, in the country where housing prices are cheap,,, really cheap, this house would cost 10x times as much in the city I live in, in the week days. But Denmark is a small contry so it is only a 45 min drive. Where are you from? and how cheap is 45 minutes from you :-? Thank you for watching! :-)

hello every body and specially morten. i will write down a little about my expirience with the server. i still got one with two xeons e5520, 48gigs of ram, two fiber HBA cards, two 460w power supplies and two 146gb sas discs for 250€. first i wanted to use the server for some testing stuff with different hypervisors but after a while i thought that it will be a good idea to exchange my physical web- and fileserver whit this one and virtualize different services to different operatingsystems using citrix xenserver. the only thing it was a bit a chain on my leg was the powerconsuption. my server before (the physical selfbuilded machine) was consumpting round about 60w in idle but this machine was higher than 2x60w in consumption. so i startet to modify the following: use just 3-4 memory banks whit 8gb modules, took out one power supply and stored it in a shelf, use just 1x xeon L5630 with 40w tdp (this cpu is not supported whit very old system-rom versions!), took out the two left fans (its possible running the machine with one cpu), throwed away the HBA cards (i dont need it because of local storage on the server). finaly iam using six sata 5400rpm drives (2x 2tb in raid 1 and 4x 1tb in raid 5). now the powerconsuption has been toggled down to 80w in idle. that is very accaptable for me. the performance of the server is still fine for that things iam doing with it. but there is one con or better bad point on the server. the fans are just running at 13% speed if i use the ilo2 firmeware 1.79 and let the server power on by it self when i plug in the power cable. if i shutdown the server manually and power it on again (not pulling out the power cable) the fans are increasing thair cooling power to 78% and do not toggle down again. the same issue i have with other ilo2 firmwares different from v. 1.79. so when i apply one of these other firmwares the fans will speed up to 78% in the case i let the server power on by it self when i plug in the cable. thats a very very strange manner. just on v 1.79 i plug in the power and let the server run for months and the fans will run static at 13% in all other cases not. i can not believe it... maybe someone other have a solution for that issue. but final i can say that my experience whit the server is very nice. i will go to bed. sleep well everybody :-)

Hi Cool work on you server! No I have not seen your problem, and not sure i totally understands what is going on. I have heard that people physically mod the fans, to make them less noisy. Thank you for watching! :-)

The SD card will not hold on a long time, maybe a half a year. What wears out these cards is excessive write and USB drives will burn out quickly due to writing on them.

Hi +MrFmlouder I do believe that the dl 180 g6 is one of the cheat entry level servers,, Where they have, spared on all things,,,the performances is probably ok but the build quality can be questionable. Hey Love you Vids all the way from the UK. Whats one the best Server to do webhosting and run Centova Cast on, I was thinking of having two seperate servers or going for one and running ESXi. I have BT Buisness with 5 static IP's, yes i know the speed is still slow compared to a hosting company, but this is a homelab/hobby. Any ideas would be great. Also if any of you guys got a server laying around that you want rid of, free better as on min income as I look after my ill fiance (no not a sob story for all you haters lol) but even for a low price. PLease PM me. I have looked on eBay but its dear over here in the UK also its full of bad ebayers. Long Process to get sorted. So any suggestions of the best server for my needs at low cost would be a great help. Anyways Keep up the great vids and good reviews, find it very intresting.
