Buy the HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook from HP: tidd.ly/3YU9aiS
By this point, you’ve likely seen our coverage (or someone else’s) of the HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook. It’s been in the public eye since early January at CES 2023 and it’s been in my hands for just over a month at this point, so I feel like many of you watching this video know what we’re dealing with, here. This is a Chromebook like no other, and in nearly every way possible, it stands head and shoulders above the rest. I’ve had to stay pretty tight-lipped about it for weeks now, and I’m so glad I can finally share with you all the reasons this laptop is as close to the perfect Chromebook as we’ve ever seen.
When we first heard about the Dragonfly Pro a few weeks before CES 2023 via a pre-CES press event online, we were definitely intrigued. The specs, the look, and the simple approach to the configuration options all made us pretty curious about this Chromebook leading up to our time in Vegas; and a few minutes of hands-on time at CES solidified those intuitions. And not long after that, we headed up to New York for a reviewer’s workshop and learned even more about this unique Chromebook, confirming what I’d hoped about the Dragonfly Pro from the start. This isn’t just another Chromebook. This one is special.

For those asking about battery life, it was a misstep not to include it, but I also would've said it is average for a 12th-gen Intel Chromebook. I routinely saw 7-9 hours of use with screen brightness set at about 40% (which is 250-300 nits on this display). It wasn't a battery champ, but it was also just as good as any other Chromebook we've reviewed with a 12th-gen Intel chip inside. In no reality did I ever see battery life as bad as what the Verge reported, so I don't know what's happening there. My assumption is with a screen this bright, the temptation is to crank the brightness up a bit more than you normally would when not attached to a charger, and that led to some poor battery life for some reviewers. Is worth noting that there are plenty of other reviews on the internet that claim 9-10 hours of battery life on a standard rundown with the Chromebook average around 9.5 hours. I'm not entirely sure where these reports of this atrocious battery life are coming from, but that was not my experience. Also we goofed up on AUE. It should read June 2030.

We all know that, with The Verge, if it's not made by Apple they're gonna find - or fabricate - SOMEthing supposedly hugely wrong with a device - yet, they'll gloss over any imperfections with Apple devices. This HP looks awesome!

This is why it makes no sense to test battery life with screen brightness standardised to a percentage of full brightness. Why do reviewers not realise that? 50% brightness in one machine can be completely different to the same in another, disadvantaging the machine that can reach a higher brightness.

@@Naldynator 100%. I mean, only pure Apple fanboys bother to read that site now. I tried listening to their, "flagship podcast" and regurgitated at how they spoke about Apple for 20 minutes during their MWC coverage. They even still make jokes with Bixby, which is 1. Much better now as seen in Mrwhostheboss and MKBHD videos and 2. Samsung had been steering away from Bixby for a long time now. And their "experts" knows no shit ever since Diether Bohn left them.

If people whack the screen brightness up then the battery life will be less. The more you use something the more you use the battery. If I run about loads, My battery declines as well. 😀

THE GOOD 👍 1. Fast performance ⚡ 2. Bright (1,200-nits) & beautiful display 😍 3. ChromeOS is great for Privacy & Security 👏 4. Great audio quality 🔊 5. Decent webcam (8MP) 📷 THE BAD👎 1. No headphone jack 2. Poor battery life 3. Expensive 4. ChromeOS bugs 5. Ecosystem features are still a work in progress (App streaming feature which was announced last year still has not arrived).

I asked on the HP website for ordering this Chromebook about stylus support. I tried to word my question carefully - would the Dragonfly Pro recognize a stylus properly such that the ChromeOS stylus tools could be utilized? Someone named "HP Team Grant" answered the following: "Yes, the HP Rechargeable USI Pen will be compatible with this DragonFly Pro Chromebook." Robby I'd love it if you could check back with any contacts you have at HP and confirm this. Odd as it may seem, for some of us the lack of true stylus support will be the deal breaker.

Replying to my own comment here. Earlier this week I got a notice from HP that a new answer was left to my question about stylus support. It was from the same "account" name HP Team Grant, but the new message states that the HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook will NOT work with a stylus, so it seems the mystery is solved. For ME, this will be the dealbreaker. I was very much on the fence about spending this much money for a Chromebook, and one which isn't a convertible - but the stylus tipped me over into the "NO" column.

Clearly, you are excited by what this device brings to the ChromeOS ecosystem and you are the proverbial kid in a candy store with this device. I'll be looking to upgrade later this year, I just need to get over the HP logo that I personally don't love. Thank you for all the great content.

The problem is an Intel CPU. Best to avoid those these days; especially in laptops. They literally use 2-4x the power of AMD chips in the same tasks and tend to run very hot. Maybe if this chromebook came with some special cut down model that stayed cool.... but with the i5; it just is too fat and hot to be "premium".

Thank you so much for this video. I have a HP Chromebook and white touchscreen with a backlit keyboard that I bought about four or five years ago and then I recently upgraded and bought a MacBook Pro and I absolutely hate it. I hate the feeling of it I don’t like the shortness of the keyboard I don’t like how big the trackpad is and I absolutely do not like the fact that there is no touchscreen. I am going to return it and I’m going to buy this laptop. I love that it comes in white, I also love the feeling of HP chrome books as I think they are spectacular and they are light weights. I will be glad to see a vivid screen and better speaker quality for sure. Thank you so much for this video.

If you won't be happy with a Chromebook from Asus, HP, or any other brand, at least try Acer! Okay, I am living in Germany, so even the pixel book go, wasn't an option for me, because I just couldn't by it! Now I have an Acer device, QHD Display, foldable screen,I mean, I could use as a tablet as well! And not only that! The one I bought was with stylos pen, which was important for me! I could even bring down the price on the telephone, wich was almost 15% off, or discount, if you will! I am still happy with it!😅😀

I'm a huge fan of this channel/website, and a hardcore Chromebook user for almost a decade. I also think the HP Dragonfly Pro looks phenomenal. But it is a glaring omission that, in a 12+ minute video, there was no mention whatsoever of the battery life of this device. Given the brightness of the screen and the specs, I was not surprised to read The Verge's claim that real-world battery life was 2.5 hours. If that is true, it is a major strike against the device, and it seems frankly bizarre for you not to have brought it up at all in this video.

Would be interested to hear theories on the podcast why this sold-out virtually on arrival. Optimist thinks HP underestimated demand. Pessimist says this is a margin-loser for HP (maybe they lose money on each unit produced) and exists as a vehicle for brand publicity, and they’ve never planned to make it widely available in Chrome OS form.

Lovely piece of kit but my Pixelbook 4K/16GB/i7 still runs like a beast and its speakers, keyboard and trackpad remain top notch, so this is not tempting. Also, my Pixelbook has 8-9hrs consistent battery life doing browser stuff, and this HP is rumoured to be around half this, according to some reviews. Hopefully, a firmware update will fix that. Whoa, no USI support ... that was a surprising one... I mean ... I do have 2 convertible chromebooks and both are USI compatible and even with this not being a convertible I would be alright with using it (as 90% of the time my chromebooks are in laptop form anyway) but that remaining 10% ... the USI pen comes in VERY handy for tasks which I just can't reliably do with my finger ... like marking up screenshots when explaining change requests and things like that. Those things are made sooooo easy by a pen ... and there's no pen with this one? I mean I'm fine if I need to buy a *specific* pen fo the laptop ... but no pen at all? that's a bit shocking. Regardless of that I might still get it if it comes to the UK (which for some reason feel like a dogs breakfast with HP lately)

HP Dragonfly Pro is a great Chromebook. I especially like its designed in performance and build quality, plus there are only two SKUs, black or white. The price seems resonable for what you get. Would I buy one? No, because it's not a convertible / flip device and does not have USI pen support. If it included both the latter functionality, then it would be the perfect Chromebook and I would buy it in a heartbeat. Iam surprised that Google forgot about what made their Pixelbook so good, the convertible form factor with pen support.

I'll make a separate post on this but I asked on the HP website for this device whether it has true stylus support (i.e. the ability to recognize a stylus and use the stylus tools). An HP engineer responded "Yes, the HP Rechargeable USI Pen will be compatible with this DragonFly Pro Chromebook." Personally I would like someone else to be the guinea pig though.

I have a very cheap Lenovo Chromebook. It does everything I need. The only reason I'm considering a premium model is the new 10-year update policy.

I have had an HP Chromebook in white with a touch for years. I then decide to upgrade to a mac book pro and absolutely hate it. I returned it and I decided to upgrade my hp to this dragonfly as I love love love my touch screen but also I love the white and the backlight keyboard is all of my wishes. I just hope the trackpad is not huge as I'm not a fan and do a lot of work on my computer and love a big keyboard laptop. My only request with hp is one-day color options for the backlight. Thank you for this review as this is the reason why I ordered the dragonfly.

it looks nice. i'm not in the market for a $1000 chromebook, but i do like the ASUS Vibe Flip CX34, it has a cool look. i just got a used HP x360 14c chromebook, it has wifi 6, and i'm using it to replace my Pixelbook Go for now until i can buy a new Chromebook, maybe when the holidays come up.

Did you forget to talk about the battery? That's pretty important. Other reviews mention the battery life isn't so great on this thing. What is the point of a Chromebook if it doesn't have good battery life?

Thanks for pointing out the most important thing. A premium Chromebook like this is not about features and killer specs. It's about the look and feel of it, the attention to detail. When you use something daily for 3-5 years, you want it to be durable and look really nice. That's the whole point of these things.

That's quite the piece of hardware, and at a very solid price point, as well. Battery life is probably the biggest knock against it, but that super bright screen exacts a heavy toll on the battery, I imagine.

The poor battery life is WITH them toning the screen down. I'm sure it gets like 1-2 hours of battery life with the screen at max.

Like others have commented, I think this could have been a convertible with little compromise to the overall design. I also think there's room for a version with an i3 CPU, 8GB RAM, and 128GB SSD. Even at those specs, running ChromeOS, the laptop would still be fast and still feel premium.

@@sgodsellify Cores dont matter as much as the processors clock speed which will impact a lot more than cores will especially when you are not video editing or doing anything that loads a lot of cores. Which is why AMD processors with 6 cores and 12 threads beat intel processors with similar core amounts or even 16 cores or threads as they are frequently clocked significantly higher and have a lot more cache so amd processors are able to do a hell of a lot more at once.

Given how much time and money HP put into developing and promoting this device, I find it absolutely bizarre that it's not available. Anywhere. And there are no pre-orders or future availability dates at the moment. That's a monumental misstep.

I have an almost 2 year old HP 360 with an i3 and 8gb of ram. It runs everything and bench marks faster or just below newer Chromebooks. If I’m going to upgrade I’m gonna need a Chromebook that blows the one I have out of the water. This maybe it. $999 it kinda steep since I only paid $360 for the one I have.
