Great video! I actually bought one as a gift to my brother, whose HP Compaq 6910p had become outdated. The one I purchased actually features a web cam along with the Thinklight knockoff. I installed Windows 7 on the computer and I can safely say it is one of the if not the best Windows 7 machine I've ever used. HP even has Windows XP drivers for those diehard retrogamers. Of course the one I purchased has a TN-panel, but I found all right. The keyboard is decent, definitely better than the one found on the newer HP ProBook 645 G1 (an AMD based laptop, one of the daily driver laptops I use), the glass trackpad is surprisingly good and the Trackpoint is OK. I bought mine for 120€ (approx. 135.67 USD/184.15 CAD/194.93 AUD/107.66 GBP). The only things that need replacing are the main battery and the CMOS clock battery. Specs: i5-2520m, 4GB of RAM, 120GB SSD, integrated Intel HD graphics. I might upgrade the RAM to 8GBs and install a larger SSD in the future.

Haven't watched it yet, I'll watch it later at home. But until then, lemme tell you my experience with this. My friend left a 8460p with a dead gpu at my house. He told me that I can have it. So... I put an 8470p Mainboard in it (keep in mind the different lvds, and express card board). It works now flawlessly, with a 1600x900 TN panel (terrible colors, but the resolution is nice). The keyboard is nice and tactile, rock hard bottoming out, much like scissor switches. The trackpad, tho a bit irresponsive, it's glass, and the buttons are awesome. I miss the scroll button from the track point. Speaking of it, the trackpoint works just as well as Lenovo's. The chassis feels ridged, nice and metallic, but doesn't withstand drops as well as Lenovos. Overall quality is comparable to Alu Powerboks. The i5 3320M stays cool, even with 100% cpu and Intel igp usage. I am very satisfied with this piece of my collection. Recommended!

From what I've seen, HP's EliteBooks and ZBooks have always been overshadowed by Dell's and (most importantly) Lenovo's ThinkPads, for some reasons - despite their business models being pretty competitive in their respective segment. I've tested and owned ZBooks myself, and to me they really are not any worse than a competing ThinkPad - perhaps even better, for reasons that would probably take too long to explain here. It probably doesn't help either that these days, HP's consumer laptops have a pretty bad reputation online (and deservedly so, as a HP-kinda person) for their build quality and hinge issues. But long as that translates to cheaper price for their used business/workstation laptops compared to ThinkPads, it's still a win either way for the buyer I suppose.

This is a interesting laptop but it is a beast.a few things. 1. It is verry, very heavy and the power brick is literally a brick. 2. The laptop may not work with an aftermarket charger or battery. 3. No idea about this Meltier Module, sorry. As for the displays, the only way to know would be to get a SN and reverse look-up a build sheet or have the device in front of you and boot it into an OS and check. Nice review. I didn't know that the security screw was hiding beneath the bottom panel. It's common that some models (SKU's) didn't have a webcam by default. ThinkPads are the same way. The screen seems to have been replaced because the screw covers are missing. The touchpad disable function should have been a hotkey IMO. You can accidentally disable your touchpad sometimes. I hate the small size of the power button on these EliteBooks. It hasn't changed even on the newer EliteBooks. If you want to dis-assemble the laptop further than what you showed, then you will need Torx screw bits. HP is famous for doing this. I like that HP gave you USB 3.0 on the 8460p. I wish Lenovo did that on the T420.

Strange that these machines struggle so much with Windows 10, what did other brands do differently that gives better compatibility?
@Suddenly_Audrey4 жыл бұрын
@@LaptopRetrospective well first off other brands have enough drivers for windows 10 lmao. Idk about the elitebook in this video but for mine they had all the drivers for 7 and 8 (and oddly xp too?) They didn't have the same for 10. It was short a couple of drivers. So for example to get better audio out of it I had to use audio drivers for Windows 8 because those drivers weren't in 10. If I didn't do that then audio out of the speakers would be very quiet. And then certain other drivers wouldn't work well for whatever reason.

True enough on the drivers. It's just interesting that this isn't something that is better covered by HP, seems like an oversight that others don't allow to happen.

I started using Elitebooks in 2009 when I bought 2 very nice 2730p tablets and 11 years later I'm typing this comment on an Elitebook x360 1030 convertible. The 8460p was the only model of the line I absolutely HATED. I bought it without seeing it beforehand because it was one of the very few laptops which then offered a 1600x900 screen. When I opened the box, what a ghastly surprise: this 8460p looked just like a fake MacBook. I would never have walked around with a counterfeit scarf or handbag and I was to go to meetings with this diddle. And a very poor quality one at that. The 1600x900 screen also turned out to be extremely disappointing (display being my no 1 criteria) . Not bright enough, badly calibrated. The worst part was the keyboard, HP's fist chicklet model borrowed from Apple. The worst keyboard I ever used and a big setback from the 2730p's slightly curved, accurate and pleasant keys. From then on, I had to halve my typing speed or the characters would jam like on an old typewriter and come up all scrambled. A constant ordeal. On a very stormy night in France, my 8460p blew up while being charged. I did regret the financial loss, but certainly not this dud. Being in a rush, I went for an Elitebook again: this time a briefly pre-tested 850 G1 which still gives good service in the family today. Like some 840 G1, G2, G3 and even an 810 Revolve which is built like a tank and great for traveling on the rough. But you can all write off the 8460p.
