I bought an HP 800 G5 Mini (i7 9th Gen) for $800US and I use it as my main PC now. I like the small mini form factor and I don't have a tower taking up so much space. I did add another 16gigs Ram (its now 32gigs) a 1TB m.2 NVME and had to remove the SSD drive tray but then removed the connector and added a 1TB SSD drive (just used thermal pads o the m.2 drives. I also had to get the WiFi and Bluetooth chip to install and now everything is where I want it to be for this mini PC. I also had bought the VESA bracket for mounting it to the back of my monitor. I will say this was worth the money :)

Then bought an HP 800 G4 DM 8600 $66. an HP 800 G3 DM 7500T $21. an HP 800 G3 6500 SFF ($13. bought it because of dirt cheap). run them awhile, now I would say, you are right. when buy the DM model, its fan is a factor. my G4 8600 (no "T") runs loud. it's quite annoying. I was hoping it could be my main PC. DM G4 fan/cooling design looks significantly different from DM G3, guess it's due to G4's high power CPU. I love DM G3 more. mini and quiet. but its CPU power looks a little bit weak. I am looking for a G5 9500 SFF. my lesson from DM G4, a silent DM at high power CPU can be a challenge. SFF can be a better solution. good air circulation for high power CPU heat while stays quiet. and what I have read, HP 800 G4 and G5 are identical in hardware (but device ID and BIOS are different)

Heavily single-threaded bound, unfortunately. 6600k all-core 4.5Ghz with 2933Mhz RAM can't keep up with an iron farm in the spawn chunks, a overworld base loaded and someone exploring the Nether at the same time, despite CPU usage topping at 35-40%. Gonna need some sweet Zen3 or Alder Lake IPC for hosting Minecraft 😅

The G4 (HP EliteDesk 800 G4) is a good example kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5Wol2CajdFglbs Most of the dual-slot systems are newer just due to PCIe lane expansion. M.2 is almost always PCIe/ NVMe, but some have SATA as well.

One tip I recommend when setting up these is face the front of the machine to your right, and the back of the machine to your left... i.e., turn it 90 degrees counter clockwise on the desk before you put your monitor on top of it. That will put all you front SUB ports accessible to the right, and all your rear USB ports and cables accessible to your left. The top cover will the open to your right, instead of the door swinging out at you.

I've seen some of the older ones (4th gen core) for around $250 or so. If you can get one with an i7 they're still decent processors if you don't need heaps of power. They can also be DDR3, so a bit cheaper to go big on memory.

@X D Austria is a tiny country in Europe on the border of Germany, and their currency is the euro. Australia has a geographical size similar to yankville and is an island continent in oceania/asia. Our currency is the AUD. People in the low socio-economic spectrum in Australia have incomes around that of middle class people in yankville. So even relatively modest paid Australians would be exceptionally well off on yankville. With all of that income, prices increase. On top of that, any goods that cross the USD at any stage in their trade go up in price over and above exchange rates. If I look to buy something made in Asia or Europe even by a yankvillain brand, and purchase directly through a supply line that does not cross the USD (such as through asia) the end consumer will pay between 35% and 300% less than if the same product crossed the USD. Thus most product lines in Australia go through a supply line that does not cross the USD wherever possible in order to be competitive on price.

This will be my first unit of its kind. I am retiring desktops due to power usage. The 35 watt power level seems very nice for an X86 lab system. I actually have some ram from a laptop upgrade it can use. I may add a low end M2 SSD VM storage. It seems storage and memory upgrades are easy, while processors seem a bit pricey. I suggest looking for a pre-upgraded unit on the secondary market if you need more than an I5 processor. You may find machines fully configured, with more ram, a better processor, and more storage, for cheaper than buying a base unit and upgrading it yourself. I am talking about factory refurbished machines, not building up an Ebay core. I run linux, so not running Windows 11 is a feature. Thanks for the info.

Some of the units like the M920x have these for GPUs and also i350-T4's. The challenge is that the rear I/O brackets are not standard so you need to figure out a solution there. Also, the risers can be expensive if the unit was not equipped with one.

9:30 ~ I'm not sure if you missed it, but I have seen HP's review of this unit and it seems it has two M.2 NVMe slots. The other one is hidden someone beneath the processor's fan.

You can use the wireless slot for a second SSD. That's as long as you don't need the wireless capability. It only need be one of the short nvme drives. Thus the G3 can actually hold 3 SSD!!

Being used to Lenovo tiny's that have a more conventional BIOS, getting used to HP's goofy BIOS layout takes a bit of time and patience. Requires using multiple Fx keys to access different parts of it. Not sure why they did it this way to be honest. I suggest reading both the owners and maintainance manuals before proceeding.

I like the port configuration of the HP Mini series(G3). But i like the overall design of the Lenovo better, and so far as i can tell, you can 'pimp' those lenovos out better, with AMD 8 core processors and so far as i can tell, even ECC memory, though i do not know that the motherboard supports ECC uSODIMMS. Also lools like the M75Q gen2 might be able to be modified to get a small PCIe 8/16x device, it would need low power as there is very little airflow, but i could see a dual port SFP+ adapter possibly working, or at least a 4 port 1G 8P8C. Idont have mine on hand yet, but i saw a teardown that appears t have a cutout for a single slot PCIe IO plate, and then the traces for a PCIe 16x slot, just mising the slot itself

That HEVC satisfies the price dif between the 7500 and 6500 for me. I'd keep using this 2013 Ultrabook if it supported HEVC. Instead I'm having to use youtube browser add-ins to force x264 codecs and hide 60fps formats. I think this little system will take up less space on my desk and be a big upgrade over my laptop. I'm curious if the 8500 series CPU can be swapped in on this system board.

Found a flood of 600 G3 I5-6500T models here and they are about 210USD per unit in good condition and 16GB ram which sounds like a pretty good value for money, especially if you want a small size PC. On top of that I get 10% discounts that make it around 190- great find to be honest compared to the huge, slightly weaker PCs I get

If you can flash the BIOS it is possible. Given the pricing though, we usually tell folks to save the hassle and just get the one you want. Plus, the big upgrade was the 8500T generation since you got two more cores. Before the 8500T, Intel was not pushing innovation because Ryzen was not a competitor yet.

But, I got my 6500T Elitedesk today and, so far, it looks good enough for KZbin at 1080p60 which is all I need. ;) A few dropped frames are there (~0.1-1%) at 1080p60 but that was about the same on my old media PC (a Thinkpad T450s with an i7-5600U).

We generally recommend newer ones. These are good for Linux, but if you ever want to run Windows 11, it is much easier to have an 8th Gen Core one, especially since these usually have Pro licenses. Also with the 8th Gen Core, you have enough power to run Windows 11 Pro + WSL2 for Linux. These are cheap because of the Win 11 requirement change.

The only thing that I've found that I haven't liked is that the wireless card in my doesn't appear to be compatible with Linux. The PCI ID doesn't for the wireless card doesn't show up in the module parameters so it gets ignored even through a driver is detected. Tried updating the firmware for the wireless card which didn't work since the card is being recolonized.

Yeah, another dawg from HP, again DisplayPorts, andn o idea what that is for a power connector. no wonder they are so dirt cheap. You're not going to be able to power this unless you buy a brand name or aftermarket power supply brick for it which is going to add 50% to the cost, or if you rig up a bench power supply. It's just not worth fooling with. Once you add the cost of a new power brick, DisplayPort monitor (which you didn't have and had to buy retail), bargain bin SSD drive new, add USB keyboard and mouse, and install the OS on it... it's just not appealing any more... even if you can buy these at $85 a pop in 2022. By the time you're done, you've spent $350 for an old computer that is HP propreitary on the inside and not particularly expandable (no PCI slots, limited DIMM slots, old CPU socket). If you're a PC tech, don't be a douche, reformat the drive and leave it in there, and wrap the power cable around the unit for when it's sold. Its not hard to do. If you can't do either, I'd fire you as a PC tech. For monitors, wrap the power cable and display cable around the stand. Ditto for keyboards and mice, wrap the cable around the unit. Don't touch the fan blades "pulling out the fan gunk".. you'll throw them off axis. Instead, open them up and take them out on your front porch with the case lid off, and blast them with a electric handheld leaf blower. Aim around from all sorts of angles and hit the power supply fan and the CPU fans. Been doing it for 30 years with no problems.

@Adnan Ali Yeah, I bought a handful of display port to DVI cables. You have to be careful wit the displayport connector end thouth, as they are close other and the cables I bought have fat connector ends on them so you'll only be connecting one monitor per machine with these cables. lLive iand learn. I believe the Mobo also has an SVGA out port> I wanted to go digital though. VIdeo chip uses 32mb of your mobo RAM. The low profile dedicated GPU cards are expensive. You can add wifi and bluetooth to them with cheap USB dongles. Oddly, probably the most infuriating thing about these machines I find is the flush mounted power switch on the front. It's a small insignificant detail, but aggravating as h3ll if you are blind. The best part of the system is the Intel 4790K which at the time back then, was a a top of the line CPU. I bought 4 of these as gifts; if I had to do it again, I'd buy just the mobo, cpu and cpu fan, an the third party power connector adapter, and then drop the mobo in a generic whitebox midtower case with full sized Geforce 970 or higher GPU, 500 watt PSU, Nettac 512gb SSD, and load it up with four 8 GB DDR3L modules. All the "HP" done stuff about this rig .. you can do better just as cheap. So all you really want is the cpu chip, cpu, and cpu fan.
