Thanks for the video. I glued my left hinge and reinforced the right one and everything now works fine. Could have never figured out how to get at the hinge without the video even though a few of the screws and connectors were in slightly different locations on my G7. I'd used my G7 for several months with the broken hinge but finally the screen stopped working because the connector to the motherboard had finally worked itself loose near the broken hinge. One repair shop wanted $300 for the fix and another (the store where I bought it) said it couldn't be fixed at all. Your video has saved me a lot of money. Thanks again.

Thanks for this; my g7 suffered the same ailment but with the guidance provided in this video I was able to remedy the situation. One complication was that a piece of plastic from the brass anchor housing somehow got sucked into the cooling fan and jammed it; I started getting the "fan not running" alarm every startup. I was able to fish it out and all is well now. Thanks again.

My G7 just did this today. Thank you for your video. I'm so glad laptop repair isn't foreign to me. I wanted a laptop probably 10 years ago and couldn't afford one. I bought an old HP on eBay for about $35 and I learned as I went and pieced it back together. I had that thing apart so many times I lost count. My husbands friend was over today and I mentioned something popped when I adjusted my screen today and even my husbands friend said sounds like a hinge busted. I said Oh God I hope not! I don't wanna go back down that road again. I only close my laptop when I take it places which is quite rare. I don't want to overuse the hinges and they do what this one did today and pop. Cheap crap plastic! I agree with you about not letting HP be a friend anymore and they're no longer invited to your birthday party. I'm no longer HP's friend and they're not invited to my birthday party either. I've got so much going on, this hinge is not what I needed on my to do list. With this laptop being newer to me and I've never had to open it until now, I went looking for assembly instructions and found your video. Thank you so very much for your video. I will repair it strong so I do not have to open this again or hinge issues. Stay blessed my friend.

I've got some JB Weld PlasticWeld Quick-Setting Epoxy that sets in 5 minutes. I looked up the Loctite Plastic Bonding and it's pretty much the same thing. One wheel axle housing cracked on my Hoover Air Lift vacuum and it would not let me wheel or steer it like normal. So we took it apart and used this JB Weld and some fitting washers to re-enforce it and it's better than a new one now. Guess I'll be doing the same thing on this. This stuff cures hard as a rock so since I have plenty of this, I have to vent the room and use this on this project. It's so horrible that these companies make such great products, but they are not built strong. I could have bought just that bottom piece of my vacuum, but it would have broke again in a few years of use so why do it again? JB Weld it and move on. JB Weld is the new duck tape I guess. LOL!

I'm glad to hear that you appreciated my video. In HP's defense, these problems are definitely not unique to HP and in general I don't find HP laptops to be of any worse quality than any other brand. It's specific models with specific design defects, not brands in general. There's a Toshiba hinge mount repair video on my channel too, and I've fixed something from practically all brands in the same way.

Thanks for your helpful video. My son "broke" the hinge arrangement on my pavillion g7 2215DX becuse he has no mechanical intuition, and as the hinges tightened up over the years (it could have been loosened with a 5.5 mm wrench) (hard to find, but I found one) he just yanked harder and harder until it gradually ripped the hinge out of the plastic shell, but also broke the 12" long "holding arms" that run from the hinge u the side of the screen assembly. I paid HP $148 for a pair of those long holding arms for the lid, waited 4 months, and finally was ready to go. Using your help, it went smoothly. Yep, gottta use special epoxy made for Plastic, regular epoxy wont do. (Learned that the hard way gluing the plastic door shells back onto their plastic frame in a 94 Firebird.) . Anyhoo thanks for your tip. I luv my little 17" screen G7 pavillion and have had to give it CPR over the last 10-15 years a number of times. I own two, duplicates, so that when one goes down the other fills in while I do the repair.

Thanks for the clear video. The only thing which is missing: Why did the hing come loose. I just had to fix a repaired hing for the 2nd time and this time I also reduced the friction on the hings. By the time the friction of the hings increased and give a higher load on the anker points when opening or closing. I pick a video which explains how to change the display to look at the assembly of the display cover and adjusted the friction of the hings. Not to loose so the display will stay in place when opened. I also watched some other videos regarding broken hings of laptops and actually non highlighted this friction issue as the possible cause of the problem.

The plastic is insufficient for the hinge strength on these things, especially if someone opens them improperly (one hand on one side).

Added to m post on hinges on the Pavillion G7. I was able to loosen up the hinges on my Pavillion G7 2215 with a tiny metric wrench I bought at SEARS (or whats left of it). They sell a bag of tiny metric wrenches, and one of them was 5.5 mm (??? thats right 5.5 not just 5 or 6) Perfect fit to the end nut on the hinge. Turning it about 1/6 of a turn loosened it just enough. to make the hinge not unreasonably tight.

Hey, sorry I didn't catch this comment sooner. Your best bet would be to point them at this video and tell them you'd like your hinges epoxied. Of course, depending on their labor costs, it could be cheaper to just have all of the plastics replaced.

Me rn. Cept, I couldn't get the top case to snap off after unscrewing everything (must've missed something or other) and wound up cracking the grill protecting the fan on the side whilst trying to clean the fan properly. The left hinge seems to have become loose afterwards and pushes up on the case every time I open it now.

Seems like a common spot to break, mine was loose on that side and developed a crack under, surprisingly didn't break the hinge until I fell asleep on it while it was face down

Did you do anything to lubricate or otherwise reduce the effort required to close the lid so the problem does not recur?
@JodyBruchon4 жыл бұрын
I don't think that is possible. The hinges are supposed to be hard to open and close because laptops don't use closing latches anymore, and you don't want the screen to fall from its own weight either.

Просто сказочный довн. И да, нижняя часть корпуса, по сути кусок пластика, стоит 3,5к рублей.

what do call the circle thing brass anchor or anker? i have the same problem with my hp dv6-4008tx
@JodyBruchon4 жыл бұрын
I believe they are actually called "brass thread inserts." If your inserts are missing, you may be better off just slapping a ton of epoxy in there and permanently attaching the hinge to the remaining plastic. It's not really worth looking for inserts on these really old laptops.

Not necessarily. I see this sort of failure on loads of different laptops. It spans several brands and models. These Windows 7 era HP consumer-grade laptops do seem to have this happen a bit more frequently. If you want, you can ship it to me and I'll do it for you.

I'm just looking at a friend's HP g6 (AMD) with what looks like the same problem (hinges ok I think, hinge mounts broken). I (still) have the same problem with my HP but after already replacing the fan on it, the number of connectors and ribbon cables has me worried. After I did mine, the mouse pad stopped working so I obviously messed up the ribbon cable even though I was careful. So, do I have another go on my friend's? Not really sure what the issue will be but guessing broken plastic around the brass mounts. I don't think I have the nerve.

Every time you do a disassembly, you learn. You will make mistakes sometimes. I have cost myself some serious money, but I never made those mistakes again either. Go for it. Don't be afraid. It's not like the computer is in good shape at this point.

Dropped my laptop from about 3 ft and the same thing happened, but on the other side. Do you think there are any components that could be in danger from it being open? Not sure if I should bother with trying to repair it if I can get something newer in 3-6 months, but if it goes down the crapper I might be screwed since I work from my computer. Here's a pic, though the gaps a bit wider with the screen open - i.imgur.com/3wXo2dQ.jpg Also a little worried about trying to open it in case there's more damage than what I can see.
@JodyBruchon7 жыл бұрын
Kay Jaded You should be okay as long as you are careful. The hinge doesn't go through the motherboard or anything like that, but keep in mind that the other hinge is now taking double the stress and may break more easily. It'll probably work just fine for several months if you handle with care.

Laptop turns on but fan or screen doesn’t work. I tried to connect it external monitor which also didn’t work. ;(
@JodyBruchon6 жыл бұрын
That may be beyond my help. It's normal for a fan to not turn on when the unit is not hot yet and most laptops won't drive an external monitor at pre-boot without a BIOS setting that requires the LCD to change. Re-seat the RAM. Look to see if the hard drive activity light blinks indicating booting is happening. Does the Caps Lock light work?
@johnanderson25076 жыл бұрын
The caps lock light didn’t turn on
@JodyBruchon6 жыл бұрын
That means that the computer isn't even booting to the point that the keyboard works. Try re-seating RAM and then CPU and if neither of those make it start working you're looking at either a reflow, a motherboard replacement, or a new computer. Sorry man :\ I have a reflow tutorial video on my channel if interested; you'll need a heat gun.
@johnanderson25076 жыл бұрын
I don’t know if this is relevant but the internet/WiFi button is lit
@JodyBruchon6 жыл бұрын
That will light up anyway, so it doesn't matter. Re-seat, then reflow, then (once all that fails) consider computer replacement. I wish I had a better blind diagnosis to give you but that's all I've got.

long tooth At my shop I do this kind of repair for $75. I don't know why it would be so expensive unless you were having it done somewhere like Geek Squad. If your computer is fine otherwise it's worth the repair, but $300 isn't far from what it costs to replace this machine with a brand new equivalent.
