I bought one of these in 2006..not that model but similar. It is a media center pc but with an AMD Athlon X2 I believe…I remember I bought it in the long gone CompUSA.…I still have it…it works but I dont use it anymore. Usually those pcs also came with an IR sensor and a windows media center remote control..the sensor receive the signal from remote and also transmitted IR signal to control the cable box or Dish Network box…I remember I used that pc as a DVR back in the day to record shows when I used to have Dish Network. Old times memories.

I miss the silver tech era. I remember around 2005/06, every young person started to view silver tech as uncool and tacky (myself included), but now tons of us who grew up with it are nostalgic for it. I guess it's the 20 year nostalgia cycle thing.

I remember having this exact model about 7-8 years ago that I had to completely from scratch, redo and install/update the BIOS on it since it was corrupted to hell and back, and once I got it running, IIRC I installed Windows 7 to turn it into a starter NAS. Good times

An analog TV tuner card was an option on some of those XP Media Center machines, although that was not included on this particular example. Of course, those factory-installed tuner cards would only work with the old analog TV signals, which are no longer being broadcast. However, there are Hauppauge branded digital TV tuner cards available, if interested in adding that kind of Media Center upgrade. Later Windows editions dropped native TV tuner support, but the Hauppauge TV tuner software still functioned in it's place.

This is a common misconception about these machines. Machines that were built after 2006 were required by the FCC to have either QAM ATSC or combined cards to be compliant with phase 1 of the dtv transition. WMC also had update roll-up 2 that added support to digital broadcast television standards like those and cablecard.
@davidvelazquez9473
@davidvelazquez9473 5 ай бұрын
@@TheRetroRecall AMEN! The model I would recommend is the Hauppauge HVR-1600, as it has an ATSC tuner and it's PCI, not PCIe, as these machines only have an x16 PCIe slot for graphics cards, and it's recommended to save that for discrete graphics.

My dad had one of these systems around mid 2005. That computer is long gone now so I'm not sure the exact model but I do remember it having an orange/white AMD Athlon 64 decal on the front. I think it had a capture/tuner card of some sort in it too because there were RCA and S-Video ports on the front when you slid the door down. Also, to answer your question about the capacitor plague, it happened between 1999 to 2007. By the start of 2006, most motherboard manufacturers would have stopped using affected capacitors. Although MSI would still continue to face capacitor issues well pass 2006 and into 2007.

A really very nice contemporary system. Back then, Microsoft was still really creative 😁 I personally really like using this MCE theme, it just looks fresher and more colorful. I never had a Media Center PC myself, so everything passed me by a bit back then. I still have a card reader with USB 3.0 in my gaming PC today. I still use cards like this often. And I also still have an optical drive. But no one needs modem cards like that anymore, what else can we do with them? Even back in 2005 and 2006, they were obsolete and more like a museum.

The Intel DH87RL “Round Lake” (i7, 4770S) mATX motherboard with internal WiFi antennas (repurposed laptop antennas) behind the plastic front panel. SSD for Boot Drive, DVD, and two WD Red drives (4 GB) for a Raid 0 Data Storage. I still use this computer today, it runs Windows 10 !! Refreshed all the front decals for Intel i7 and Win10 !

My family used to have one of these (or at least a similar machine) back around 2007-2008. It died around 2009-2010 due to what I now know is a dying GPU, but at the time we didn't know that, so we threw it out. I'd LOVE to have one of these again. With the full set of peripherals would be nice. These machines, or at least the one we had, had a 1680x1050 monitor, and a matching silver keyboard and mouse

1680x1050 was such a fantastic resolution to have back then. I had a dual monitor setup in the late 2000s that had a 20" primary Dell UltraSharp at that resolution, sitting next to a matching 17" 1280x1024 model from the same line. Colors were pretty decent for the time, and those screen sizes meant the pixel density on them was relatively high too so they genuinely were sharp! I never much liked how 20 inch 1280x1024 displays looked.. I still have those, still working last I checked! I like using them when putting together XP era stuff.

The plague affects mainly Pentium 4 and Athlon/Athlon XP systems right until the Athlon 64. Older systems didn't draw nearly as much power and were not that often affected. I think the problem is more with new old stock parts than old used parts as the original owner would've very likely have fixed it. I remember at the time that we saw a lot of new stuff thrown away because of it, those failed early in the life. But when buying unused old parts, one might find the caps gone bad just sitting in there.

I googled the model number, The drive in the expansion bay is a x48 speed CD-ROM drive, which is an interesting drive to pair with the DVD burner the system came with, considering it's several years older. My best guess is the original owner used the system to copy cds, and just threw in a spare they had. (When I see an odd configuration like that I like to speculate on it.)

Used it (and abused it - too many system restores to count) until 2012 when I finally got into gaming PCs during HS. I saw the "XP Media Center Edition" on the top of the case and I was hoping this one would turn out to be one with a tuner card. I remember when that was a big thing, you'd get the card, and the Windows Media Center remote too, sometimes with RCA pass-throughs on the front panel. I always wanted on of those machines when I was a teenager, thinking how cool it would be to connect a PS2 or Gamecube up to play console games through my PC. I really love the "wild west" vibe from PCs of this era, so many cool little features you just don't see anymore.

Was my first PC to connect to the internet after a few years of owning it. I was about 13 years old when I got it. I tried to upgrade it with a sapphire card at the time but aside from spinning fans - no video. Hard to say what the issue was now, but I definitely didn't know what I was doing. When I was a kid, the extra images found in the My Pictures folder of these 2002-2006 era HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario PCs were my favorite as a kid on my old Windows XP computer. Sadly, as far as I know, nobody has archived these onto the Internet Archive for anyone to see. They probably came bundled with their Windows XP PCs that had either HP Image Zone or HP Photosmart Premier pre-installed, though I'm not sure which HP software those images came from.

My family had an a1600n from 2006 which came in exactly the same case as your unit and had an Athlon X2 3800+, 1 GB of RAM, a 200 GB HDD and integrated nVidia graphics. I seem to remember it costing around $600 on sale near the end of 2006. We also had an m7640n, which was a higher up model from the same year with an X2 5000+, 2 GB of RAM, a 320 GB HDD and the same integrated graphics. I think it was around $900, and I can't remember if it was on sale or not. It was one of the ones with the media bay for a separate drive, which I also ended up getting. HP called this a PMD, or Personal Media Drive. The PMD was effectively an external SATA HDD enclosure with, in my case, a 500 GB drive preinstalled. It used a standard USB B port and a barrel jack for power, and there were corresponding male connectors for USB B and power inside the media bay. The unit also came with a power adapter and USB A to B cable so it could be used as a normal external drive, which was convenient because otherwise you would have had to furnish your own in order to use the drive anywhere outside the PC's media bay. Being just a particularly shaped external HDD meant the PMD was shuckable if you wanted (which was useful when I managed to knock it off a table one day while using it with my laptop, which promptly killed the drive; at least I could still use the enclosure for other drives I had). As for getting hold of the factory image for your machine, I happen to know from experience that a set of discs made for the a1600n worked perfectly when I needed to restore the m7640n. Granted, these two machines are more similar to one another than either is to your model, but nonetheless, it might be worth giving a restore image from another HP media center PC from the same era a shot. Browsing on Archive.org, I found a couple uploads for the a1520n, which is virtually identical to my (now long gone) a1600n. From my memory, the software included with both my family's machines was similar if not identical, so I would guess all the HP media center models from 2006 had the same or very similar OEM installs.

This HP had a Pentium D, 4GB RAM and a Geforce 7300 LE and I would play a crap ton of source games and others at low FPS. I remember I replaced the GPU with a Geforce 210 and that was an actual upgrade since I was able to play skyrim at 20FPS and TF2 at 60. My dad very nearly bought a slightly newer revision of these at CompUSA back in late 2006 that shipped with XP Home Edition but was labeled as “Vista Ready.” My dad didn’t like the idea of having to get a new computer then dealing with an OS upgrade a month or two down the line, so we ended up getting an iMac instead. I’m really curious what that alternate universe version of me that got the HP would be like. Regardless once I have room to get my collection started I’ll try to get one of these.

4:07 - you're probably not going to find the correct HP shade of gray plate for that floppy drive. This model of Pavilion never came with a FDD from the factory, and was built about 2 or 3 years after HP stopped building units with them (and this was probably one of the last models that still had a FDD controller on board). That particular drive is from an older Pavilion where the eject button and drive bezel are build into the computer's front fascia, circa 2001.Yup
