It's seems HP "gets it". They seem to have really understood what was wrong with the Reverb, and have made all the right design choices and upgrades on this hmd. While HTC is making bewildering design choices and seems lost in their product portfolio, HP seems to have their finger on the pulse of good hmd design and understands that a good hmd is about the details. If HP continues down this path I think they will be the next major player next to Oculus and Valve.

@Lord_of_Dread4 жыл бұрын
@@lewisveasey1674 Probably because they don't own or have any stake in 2.0 or the knuckles controllers. I think those are the least of the issues though. While the elite is really the only reasonable HMD HTC have released since the vive pro, it still has some seriously dodgy things like a tiny sweet spot compared to the competition and even the original vive, light leakage from the flip up design (which was a nice idea in concept admittedly) and worst of all... the pricing is ridiculous. It needed to be far cheaper with all of its issues to be a viable altenative to the index HMD, which is the obvious choice if you can save just a little bit extra.

Between the lack of lighthouse tracking and the tracking cones on the controllers that will interfere with gameplay, I think they're still not really competitive for gaming. If they fixed both of those, they'd be a dangerous competitor, but as it stands not so much.

Inside out is more than good enough, i had WMR, and still have friends on WMR that absolutely kick ass on Beat Saber Expert+ the only issue was tracking volume, so now with 4 cameras it's more than good enough. I think the real downgrade from an index is just the non-finger tracking controllers. - I do agree though, this isn't an index replacement, it's a Rift S killer
@Lord_of_Dread4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. If you're going to spend this much on VR for gaming, it seems silly to buy anything other than the index.
@aidangillett53964 жыл бұрын
Disagree, as long as they get the inside-out tracking to be on-par with the Rift S performance (that was wonky on launch but got very, very good) and not something utterly dogshite like the Vive Cosmos My favourite controllers are still the Rift CV1's, they are more ergonomic and comfortable than the index controllers, better balanced, nicer feel. They tend to work better as 'game controllers' and not 'pseudo-reality' inputs. At this point in the time the individual finger tracking, variable pressure sensors etc are technically superior but the reality is practically nothing supports it. You can buy straps for the CV1 or RiftS controllers so you can open and close your entire hand if you so wish, but the far lighter/smaller controllers just tend to work better as a daily driver For me the biggest feature of the Index is actually the FoV, I find that is far more noticeable and immersive than the refresh rate or the controllers. If I could i'd get just the headset but stick with the CV1 controllers, unfortunately not possible to do So this Reverb G2 seems to get much closer to my ideals given the controllers seem quite a bit similar, although the battery life of 4-8 hours as opposed to ~35 hours is a bit shit
@Exccentrik4 жыл бұрын
I know this comment was made 4 months ago so we have more information now but from what I see the G2 is now the best on the market apart from tracking tech and controllers but you can use the index knuckles with them so I plan on just getting those at a later date, dont mind the lower refresh rate for the much higher clarity

The tracking is fine. You just have to know how to work with it. Well lit room, avoid mirrors, windows and bright screens. The main troubles with tracking were the 1st generation, which used/required a separate BT dongle. Gen 2 moved to built in BT between the HMD and controllers and things improved MASSIVELY. People also forget that WMR controllers have build in motion sensors in ADDITION to the inside out. The whole "it looses tracking behind my head/shoulder/ect" is BS. I've never found a game that I haven't been able to play. The last 'problem' is just getting decent batteries. Yeah, the controllers will eat AA's... REGULAR AA's won't cut it. Invest in a set of NiZn 1.6v rechargables. They last for DAYS. WMR gets a bad rap because all the Vive Fan Bois are pissed they popped $1k or more for 'brand name' recognition. Hell, the Samsung Odyssey+ still has the best screen on the market, least SDE and deepest blacks due to the OLEDs. You can pick it up for $300 regularly, and it includes far better controllers than the standard WMR. I went WMR with Gen1 (Odyssey original) and just bought the Odyssey+ this year and gave my old O to my son. The only thing that will shift me at this point is a wider FOV.

If you've not bought into VR yet then fair enough the Reverb G2 is a good start (along with the index) but like many I've already got a Gen 1 Vive and is still an incredible piece of hardware that isn't remotly struggling to keep up with the available software . . . in fact I would say software IS the problem for VR now. The only way I'll spend another penny on VR hardware now is if a reputable company meaningfully increases the FOV over 170 or even better similar to a PiMax or StarVR . . . other than that these Hardware improvements are the equivalent of a face lift to last years SUV to me, it just doesn't offer any futher value
@Brad.28744 жыл бұрын
Only problems I've got with the Vive is the displays, lenses, weight and controllers. Basically everything I want to be good. All the time now we're getting way better hardware for VR at around the same price. I'll wait to see what people say about this headset, but I might end up selling my Rift S to get this, depending on the other hardware available at it's launch. With VR, it is always worth upgrading and getting more immersion. The more immersion you have, the more fun you will have, and the more you will use the headset. Unlike other mediums, the Vive is only going to go down in cost as other better and cheaper headsets arrive on the market. I'd say keeping up with modern hardware is not only better on you, but on your wallet as well, as it allows you to sell your current headset and pick up something 10x better for a few hundred bucks more.
@dennisrichards25404 жыл бұрын
@@Brad.2874 I can agree mostly with what you're saying as all these parameters can obviously be improved (and I'd expect them to have by the time I buy my next headset) but FOV is the best upgrade for better immersion for VR right now. I don't agree however that its always worth upgrading for better immersion as I stated the Vive is still a great bit of kit already, so unless you're primarily playing things that aren't designed for VR (like simulators) then an upgrade likely isn't going to be worth it unless there is a great improvement. To put it into perspective Half-Life Alyx is pretty much the cream of the crop for VR games today, My 4 year old first Gen Vive allowed me to enjoy the game perfectly, if anything I think my GTX970 needs upgreading more than my headset does.

This sounds like it'll be nearly perfect for Sim Racing. Don't have to worry about controllers, high res enough, lightweight, and your ears won't turn into yet another pressure-point sweatbox. Not getting 120Hz is a disappointment. A wider FOV would have been nice but 110 seems to be fairly standard and I haven't heard many complaints (then I've only been seriously looking at VR for a few months). Figuring out some way to get this to work with Lighthouse tracking for controllers would be the ultimate upgrade. If you can use all the various Sim controllers - wheels, pedals, shifters, joysticks, throttles, button boxes, etc. - there ought to be a way to get Lighthouse controllers & sensors to work standalone. What is it about Index controllers and Lighthouse sensors that prevent them from being used without the headset? Just product differentiation? I suppose it could kill the market for the Index.

Okay, definitely seems like the long awaited, strict upgrade over the rift I have been waiting for, but I'll wait to see reviews. I'm a little disappointed that it didn't go for a wide fov like 125 degrees, or a higher frame rate. But it is for sure looking like the headset to recommend. I might wait another year though, especially considering I only have a 1080. But if my rift dies, it looks like I have a replacement.

I have used a CV1 since it came out. Loved it, but the honeymoon was over a while ago. Now, 4 years later, I need the next big thing in VR to reel me back in. Technology has not improving as fast as I hoped. But I can't keep using the CV1. So it's either the Reverb G2 with (supposedly) screen door effect eliminated, or it's the Valve Index with modest improvements to SDE, FOV and refresh rate. I will get whichever one works well with iRacing.

Not sure because of the minimum system specs. Some people like myself would have to upgrade their PC. Even my Gaming laptop which I bought in 2018 doesn't meet the specs. Video card and Ram do but not the processor which is an i5. It will probably sell well to the hardcore VR enthusiasts who can't afford an index. Like mentioned if the Battery is the same then that would suck. Had to replace them like every other day sometimes daily on my Lenovo Explorer. If it cuts out in the middle of a game I would sometimes have to go through the room setup again because it sometimes doesn't detect the controller anymore after replacing the batteries. Still though I'll wait for reviews before I upgrade and take the plunge.

How does this beat Oculus? The Quest is still better in so many ways that I honestly don't think it would be worth getting this even if priced the same as the Quest due to how good the tracking is and how good Virtual Desktop has gotten.

I looked everywhere for a headset that could fit, watched multiple videos, read multiple forums, even contacted and asked companies like Oculus and Valve directly. Now I want to buy again, and when I heard there was now a Reverb G2, I was hopeful. And then I watched this video.

If it had the same displays stretched over wider FOV then it would look like crap, SDE everywhere. It has the same vertical resolution as Reverb but bigger horizontal res and much wider FOV.

While I love the lighthouse tracking of my Index I can appreciate the inside out tracking for its convenience, especially for less tech savy folks. The promise of no SDE is interesting as well. I don't see myself replacing the index anytime soon as a lot of checkboxes would need to be checked to beat it. Resolution/FoV/SDE/Refresh rate/Controllers/Tracking/Audio. There are some headsets that might beat the index in a single category but it does a very good job at all of them.

The price caught me off guard, i thought it would be more expensive than the index, but 400$ cheaper is quite amazing, i can see myself recommending that headset to alot of people! Great review VRO
@hunterm.moreno42013 жыл бұрын
I think the slightly lower FOV is completely worth it considering it's almost $700 less than the competition. I think it's overall amazing and is really pushing VR headset price drops. Yes, sometimes the tracking will glitch when directly above your head, but how often do games require that? All equal trade-offs, in my opinion, for these high-quality screens.

Also VR treadmills to solve locomotion with moving treads, not "slip and slide", lift legs in one place would be a massive part of the whole immersion VR. Yaw motion simulator has essentially solve the seated, driving, flying of VR with reasonable prices, functionality and features.

I think the lack of trackpad on the controllers might be a problem in games that doesn’t support WMR. If a game has comparability with SteamVR movements usually is defaulted on the trackpad. If I play Doom VFR it uses both the analogue sticks and the directional controllers on my Odyssey. Analogue for smooth movement and turning, directional keys for dash and teleportation. Wonder how that would work with WMR controllers without the trackpads and directional keys.
