I just set this up. Thanks MRTV! Index Controllers work in most games. However, games that have seated modes fail - you get a grey screen of death. So in those games, you have to revert to the WMR or Xbox/gamepad controllers. Also sometimes WMR cliff house likes to crawl back in your session like a bad case of herpes. So you’re never completely free of WMR. When the Index Controllers work, the G2 is a very good experience with crystal clear visuals. Also the comfort is great. The headset is lighter than the Index.

Just a tip for anyone who is trying this. I had *very bad* results when using Space Calibrator--a lot of tracking drift--and for a long time I couldn't figure out why. However, I finally realized that the issue was that SpaceCal had detected my Pitch and Roll values as being around 175 degrees. In fact, the accurate value for both was exactly 180 degrees. Once I edited my calibration, my tracking was then *almost* flawless. I suggest after running the calibration, to go in and edit your values and round the Pitch and Roll to the nearest 90 degrees. Based on how these tracking systems work (tracking a flat plane in a room), it is very likely that the offsets between them will be on a square angle like this, rather than a weird number like 175 degrees (note that this is for Pitch and Roll only, not Yaw). After doing that, you can then fine tune your XYZ offsets. An easy way I found to do this was by touching the edge of my my Vive Controller with my WMR controller, and adjusting the image in my headset until it matched the physical boundary. If you get the tracking planes properly aligned there should be only minimal tracking drift that is not noticeable in actual use (maybe like an inch or so over ten feet). But if your tracking planes are out of alignment by even 5 degrees, you'll get quite substantial drift, since the controllers are not moving through space on the same plane (you'll see them move slowly up or down vertically as you move horizontally across your play space).

@nagorak666 Жыл бұрын
@@mihtor2462 I'm afraid I can't really suggest anything other than what I already wrote. In the end mixing two tracking systems is just kind of rough. Ultimately, the continuous calibration option is probably the best solution, although it is unfortunate that it costs more money for the tracker.

@@guidanceint Do you have the recommended dongles? Also, these are not my instructions, so give credit to MRTV. I would clear the calibration, run the calibration again, and then make sure index controllers snap to hp controllers before moving forward. The controllers were all over the place for me until I ran and waited for them to snap behind the hp controllers. Also, have you ever had issues using those controllers near the TV before, if not, then that shouldn't cause it. I will also get the full valve index kit as I see there are pieces shared between the two (headphones, face gasket, yes, I know they are different but in the inside, they are the same) and the fact that the valve index has different features, like a better refresh rate and a wider FOV.

It is also suggested that you make figure 8's with your controller during calibration. Make believe you are playing with a model aircraft and making it dive and swoop. This will guarantee that all 6 degrees of movement are recorded accurately. Also, you only need to calibrate 1 controller. By calibrating the second controller you are just overwriting the data already recorded. The program auto-calculates the 2nd controller.

You can install openvr advanced settings from steam, much easier to manage install than via github 3. There is no reason to do anything besides fast calibration, and it is more accurate to put the index controller on top of your headset rather than using the wmr controller. 4. you can look into quick mounts which is just a little plate the stand of the base stations slide in and out of. Still not perfect but less unslightly and you can take the stations down whenever

If you do that your missing the point. The whole reason is for tracking improvements and not necessarily for the buttons

Something I have not heard you address (maybe I missed it) is the G2 controllers' lack of capacitive touch to register finger positions for gripping, etc. in games. Can you talk a bit about that and whether you'd consider the Index controllers a "must have" with the G2 because of this feature being missing from the stock controllers? Thanks!
@IsaacBayer4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this video. One thing though you did not talk about is using an existing headset instead of the dongles. I already own a valve index, and I was able to have both headsets plugged in and the valve index headset pairs with the controllers, no need for dongles.

I have a question. I am looking to do the same thing, and the only thing I didn't order are the dongles. Do the index controllers come with them, or do they need to be ordered separately?
@MrJericho074 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I struggled a little 😢but got there in the end. 👍 I didn't take the bluetooth settings off so base stations were not starting up or staying on duh obviously. I was using the Vive Pro headset not the dongles. The Vive Pro wands and the index controllers matched up perfectly. I also took out the face gasket and neatly velcroed the vive foam in to get the extra field of view this mod is very tidy and I can also wear glasses in the headset no problem. My only gripe is the wire on the G2 but the power needed to run the headset means that the G2 will never go wireless I will have to live with that. Alyx is going to get another playthrough, and on the 22nd we get Microsoft flight sim 2020 in VR, can't wait. I left a like and would have subbed but I did that ages ago 😜

So I'd love some feedback. I have this exact setup and it has been a huge pain in the ass. The calibration never saves from one gaming session to the next....why? It's driving me nuts.
@NJMike Жыл бұрын
This happens to me too; I have to re-tweak it literally any time I start SteamVR or when my controllers are turned back on. I've tried countless experiments and literally none of them provided any fruitful results. This has to be something to do with how the two playspaces speak to each other.
@yltope4 жыл бұрын
This sealed the deal for me, I just pre-ordered a headset and will most likely also get index controllers at some point. I've been looking to buy my first VR headset for a few months now and have been kind of lucky in that Valve is having problems delivering indexes as this caused me to have to wait and the G2 came (or is soon coming) out :-).
@Daumex4 жыл бұрын
You do know you need the base stations on top of the 300$ controllers, bringing you overall well over the price of a full Index kit? Then additionally you have to re-calibrate controllers when calibration screws up.

Im about ready to return the g2 and just get an index to avoid all these hassles. Im constantly having to recalibrate the index controllers since they seems to show up as about 1ft away from my actual hand almost every time I restart steam vr. IDK what to do, the g2 looks beautiful, but its constant hoops to jump through

@Biomodse3 жыл бұрын
when I restart steam vr after cal :)
@NJMike Жыл бұрын
@@Biomodse i used to have this issue, it's because your WMR playspace might have lost its bearings and faces a different direction as a result. This typically would occur to me when I would start the G2 up in a different lightning environment (daytime vs. evening, where I originally calbirated it at); the G2 is VERY sensitive and dependent on its environment and especially the lightning. I'd suggest ensuring you start your system up in the same environment every time to evade this problem.
@NJMike Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately recalibration through each fresh session or per time the controllers are turned on is something that is entirely persistent for me; you kind of just have to tweak the axes to get them back to where you want, it's the only workaround I can think of.
@woodnotemusix4 жыл бұрын
Was able to do this today, and its a world of difference. It was definitely an expensive upgrade though. $270 for a pair of base stations (1.0 or 2.0 are almost the same price per unit) + $300 for controllers + $70 for a pair of steam controllers (or dongles if you can find any) = $640 to fix the sh***y default tracking. I was able to work with it for a while, fiddling with the ambient light levels, but I'd still get controllers trailing away too often. If this solution didn't exist, I would have ended up selling my G2 altogether.

Thanks for the tutorial. Unfortunately the Index controllers only remain calibrated for roughly one "activation" of SteamVR, then they screw up again. Not only that but while attempting to play the Half-Life 2 VR Mod with the calibrated controllers, the entire thing crashed and now my Reverb G2 won't even turn on -_- So...not worth it.
@NJMike Жыл бұрын
I have the same issue with the calibration not remaining the same throughout new sessions, however I find that after tweaking it (typically just anywhere between +3 to +9 taps on the Y axis) fixes it for that session, until the next time the controllers are reset or turned on. The second issue you described, might I suggest attempting to disable Motion Smoothing through SteamVR and reprojection through WMR? These options had pretty much solved my crashing issue; haven't had it happen in a long time since. Your HMD not turning on, can you elaborate on what exactly happens? Do you get any error messages, or the linkbox itself won't even turn on? I used to have tons of issues with my G2 but I have pretty much got it all under wraps, and I'd like to attempt to help out if I can.
@fozzibab Жыл бұрын
@@NJMike appreciate the response! I haven't had the opportunity to try turning off motion smoothing and reprojection, but I'll give that a shot the next time I do. As for the HMD not working, I eventually got it working again but it won't work with the Half-Life 2 VR mod, that's all. When I attempt it the whole thing freezes up and I have to manually disconnect it and force quit steam VR before it'll work again 🤷 not really a problem of course cuz I have a Vive pro 2 I prefer to use anyway.
@NJMike Жыл бұрын
@@fozzibab That is quite bizarre; I've had zero issues with that game and my HMD. Have you tried re-installing the game? Perhaps there is a corrupt piece of something lingering around that your HDM doesn't like.

@NJMike Жыл бұрын
Is this an issue with your OVR Space Cal not starting up (happens with me at times), or your controllers appear in a position different from their initial calibration? Because this happens to me every time I start SteamVR or even if my controllers are turned off and back on again. Sometimes also if the tracking gets broken.

So, I followed the tutorial and it it worked like a charm, except two: things: Game space lost calibration. HP should send you a kick back! Anyway, I have a question: since I guess the Vive Pro dongle box thing does the tracking for 2 controllers (the Index ones in my case), can I use that box with the controllers and the G2 headset? Like, disconnect the actual headset itself, maybe even the DisplayPort cable that goes to the Vive Pro box, and just have it work as the dongles. Thanks for all your content!
