hey! quick question, does the read and write speed actually hit the supposed performance? or are you getting only half of it? ive been on a lot of forums about the supposed speed only hitting the 16 gbps instead of the full 32gbps

I know I'm late to say this, or someone else said it, but when you want to remove the front plate off, remove the optical drive and the front removes without poping the disk drive button off. Don't worry, you can pop it back on once you put back on the faceplate for the front first. I've worked on one. Also can you use 16gb? Did it boot with 12gb?

David Great videos on the slim . ive watched them over a few times. if you had time could you answer a few questions . 1. how can I get windows on a flash drive to reboot everything . I have a brand new hp slim I got after watching your videos . 2. after installing the new i3 8100 and 2 new sticks of ram . will the computer start back up . I ended up with the intel i3 8100 and 2 8gb Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 2400 MHz DDR4 DRAM CL16 BLS8G4D240FSEK sticks . do you think these will work?. thanks so much for the videos . still trying to decide on a hard drive

Hello, I3-8100 is a good upgrade choice. That RAM should work, most DDR4, 288 pin, 2400Hz works. To get windows 10 on drive: 1) Go to this link and create windows 10 medial drive: www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 2) Before you do your install, do a recovery by following these steps and save it to a thumb drive: support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143

I may have made another video related to this. I will have to see. I have a lot of computers here and tend to strip some of them down to reuse the parts for other videos. I believe I installed a Samsung PM981 NVME M.2. They are usually really good for installing O/S on. RAM was probably DDR4 2400Mhz to match what was in the computer. Once I got everything installed, I had to get the computer to boot to a USB so I could load up windows 10 from a thumb drive. Once I got windows installed....I had to go online and get all the drivers for this computer. Once I did that...it worked like a champ. I even upgrade the processor to a I3-9100, before taking it apart. I am not sure that answers your question...let me know.

David, I know you said you have dismantled this particular system now but, these systems are still useful. As part of a growing community of people who have content libraries at home these machines are equipped with Intel's Quicksync technology. Coupling Quicksync with Plex software and the ability to use an Nvidia graphics card to use hardware transcoding these machines can effectively transcode in the neighborhood of 15-20 streams from Plex with the right hardware setup. Just something to consider if you ever come across another machine like this in the future.

While I have no doubt that some computer engineer could do it. I wold not mess with it...between the proprietary board not lining up to anything in a case to include the I/O shield, standoffs, power button...ect. Than you are still stuck with the same PSU that probably won't fit in a computer case as it is not ATX. A bigger PSU would probably need adapters to go from PSU to motherboard. Good chance the single PCIE slot would also not line up with the ones in the case. Yeah...I think this is a bad idea.

I would say you are better off selling it and cutting your losses. That said, it is tough to make this a gamer. Even if you thru in a I7-8700 or 9700, it still can only support a slimline low profile graphics card that will provide barely any performance gains. The other thing you can do is leave the case open and hook up a GPU via PCIE ribbon extender.

@PC_HardwareTechUnboxing_1
@PC_HardwareTechUnboxing_1 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, have you figured this out yet? Most SSD's can be seen by the computer if you pull up disk management. This assumes you still have the OS on a HDD. If you just want an additional drive, than you may have to format it inside of disk management for it to be seen as a drive. If you are trying to put the OS on that drive. There are drives that will work and others will not. Most of your Samsung and WD SSD's have higher success. I have not tried a Kingston myself.

Is another motherboard suitable for this type of case?
@PC_HardwareTechUnboxing_1
@PC_HardwareTechUnboxing_1 3 жыл бұрын
Most of the Dell and HP small form factor computers have a different size motherboard than the common ones you can buy ITX, mATX...etc. The other issue is with these motherboards is that front USB, power button, reset...etc are directly connected to the motherboard unlike DIYPC where there are front panel connectors (USB 2.0, 3.0, HDD, Reset Switch, Power Switch). Now, an electrical engineer, electronics engineer...electronics technician type could figure out how to get an off the shelf motherboard to work.
@erkinalp
@erkinalp 3 жыл бұрын
@@PC_HardwareTechUnboxing_1 A mini ITX motherboard and a SFX PSU combination would work. A full size grahpics card would require a riser setup as usually done in many SFF cases. To fill the front panel, there are some ready made pieces with female receptacle in one end and internal header plug in other. The only real issue would be reset button, that you can live without or insert one by doing a DIY modification in the front panel cover.

So you are upgrading from 8GB to 12GB? It will work, whether you will get much performance gain is another story. If you had 2x8GB, it would be better in case it supports dual channel RAM. Different sizes of RAM will run at single channel. Not that you can game like this with your computer, but this video somewhat shows the difference between 4GB x 8GB x 12GB x 16GB albeit with a motherboard that has 4 RAM slots: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJ7Jfp-hgJWimpI Note, 8GB (2x4GB) in dual channel produced better gaming than 12GB in single channel.

@@stupidloser This should be the one 256GB OEM Samsung PM981 that worked. You will find some of SSD's will not be compatible...but if you go with the big names Samsung, Western Digital, HP...etc, you should have any issues. These will require downloading windows via a thumb drive. Another option would be to buy this type of Samsung which gives you migration software so you can clone your HDD to the SSD and might be easier depending on your computer skills: amzn.to/35x0FSP These drives are both by Samsung and perform about the same....but on the latter you are paying for retail packaging and the migration software.

A couple of questions: 1) Which model M.2 did you try to install? I have found some are easy to install O/S and others are not. I have found Samsung, EVO 960, 970, PM 981...and some of the WD drives work best. Brands like ADATA, Pioneer, Toshiba...are inconsistent. By that, one can usually use them as a storage drive but not O/S. 2) I need more more info than installed. Did you go thru the steps of installing Windows 10 via a thumb drive? Or are you inside Windows looking under disk management? 3) Is this a brand new M.2? or does it have possibly an O/S installed from another computer?
