HP Spectre x360 15 (2020) | Review

Reviewing the HP Spectre x360 15, a creator's laptop with a 360-degree hinge, dedicated GTX 1650 Ti graphics and a gorgeous 4K display that's perfect for photo and video editing. I've been testing the Spectre 15 x360 (fresh for 2020) for a week now and here's my final verdict on the performance, gaming abilities and overall experience.
With its £1999 asking price, this HP laptop is definitely competing against the best of 2020, such as Dell's XPS 15. You get a fold-up design that's handy for sketching, or propping up to watch a movie on the Ultra HD screen. Speaking of which, that 4K panel is stunning, offering accurate colour reproduction, crisp detail and a powerful top brightness.
Performance is strong enough for video editing and gaming with older titles, although I found the HP Spectre x360 15 did throttle when put under pressure. That's because of the powerful components, crammed inside a very slender chassis. So you won't be able to play the latest games, while even less demanding titles often slow down after a while.
Still, for editing on the fly and enjoying 4K video wherever you roam, I adored this laptop. It's not cheap, but it certainly looks and feels like a premium notebook. So that's my review, let me know if you're tempted below!

In reference to what you found as far as thermals are concerned, I found the same on mine (I have the 15 with OLED, 16GB RAM and Nvidia 1650ti with Max Q). I am only doing web surfing and music listening at this point but at times, I do notice it gets quite warm. I was almost ready to send it back to HP for repair because I thought something might be wrong but I've realized it's just the design. Besides, I've been able to keep it really cool now with a laptop cooler plus using the HP performance profiles geared towards keeping it cool. Works really well that way.

When you say Doom Eternal doesn't run well even on the lowest detail settings, was that trying to run it in 4K? What if you went all the way down to 720p? Doom Eternal should run fine then, right? Personally, I have no problem with sacrificing resolution for framerate.

I have this model and lightroom and Photoshop both work really well and colour display is very accurate. I am having issues with the internet not showing networks but I doubt every model like this is having the same issue.

I purchased the HP Spectre x360 15-eb0053tx in July 2020 for $AUD4,699. It’s been a good laptop however on 27 November 2021 the wi-fi and Bluetooth chipsets suddenly stopped working with no apparent cause. I spent two days trying to rectify the problem including removing then downloading and installing the latest drivers, a network reset, then finally a complete reformat and reinstall of Windows 10. I tried these options over and over again. Nothing worked. I don’t see how it can be a hardware problem caused by damage because it has sat on a desk for 18 months and the laptop is still physically in mint condition. I am now left with a $4800 laptop, that is less than 18 months old, that has no ability to connect to the internet. HP have not been able to resolve this problem. It’s an expensive piece of junk.

You could get way more for the money but with Spectres you are spending a lot over the odds for the benefit of good design. Which is fine BUT... The design has to remain worth the premium. That means user first. The swapping a dedicated print screen for a useless HP key and even worse timing out the backlight every 30 seconds to improve stats (leaving us users scrabbling around on the touchpad in the dark 100s of times per work session) are more problematic than HP probably realise. They are both HORRIBLE self serving design features which prioritise HP over the consumer. That sends a strong signal about tthe direction of HP design culture. This laptop proves HP can design well and then they choose not to for marketing reasons (better battery life access to HP services) and they take your money for premium consumer led design anyway. That is a serious wrong turn HP.

It is good, but not perfect. For that price it is made with very cheap fan it is loud it is noisy. Keyboard lights goes of every 10 seconds and you can not make timeout longer or make stay on. It is terrible future for keyboard. I talked to HP, but not solution. They block that future. It is my laptop and I want to keyboard light to stay on . What a terrible engineering. HP said only bla bla.

I am surprised that it does not do that good in gaming. GTX 1650 Ti is quiet a powerful laptop GPU. XPS is too expensive and the XPS's 2in1 version does not have enough powerful GPU so gaming is not possible at all. Is it possible for you to compare x360 15 to Zenbook Flip 15 UX563FD? I have a dilemma comparing these two. Which is better in performance to value?

A micro SD slot is completely useless. What a dumb idea of the designers. Is anyone gonna be removing their micro SD from their phone and putting it in their computer to transfer pictures?.....No.. Nobody does that. 99% of the population is never going to use that thing. I dont get why they didnt just put a full SD. Very good review. My Spectore x360 15 just lost the battery and HP doesn't support battery replacement for mine; the sound was in and out for a year after buying it, nowdays (4 yrs later) it barely works; 1/4 of keyboard went out 1.5 yrs after purchase. I do tons of graphics and it was brilliant. BUT, probably will get one again since I can't stand Dell's customer service and MBPro is out of my budget for now. Concerned about the keyboard changes and the screen lighting..hmmm.

I got my spectre x 360 15 2020 about a month ago. Im sending it back to change the battery because it dies after 5h30m or 6h. Before deciding this, I called them to see if this was normal and i was told no. So the spectre tech guy told me that they'd send me a box to have my laptop shipped to an HP tech repair place and that in within 6 days i would have it back. Apparently it is supposed to last longer than 5h30m as it is said in the video. I also tested it with working in chrome, and youtube streaming, plus OneNote. Other than this I like it a lot.
