Dear all!! - This video is old now and the laptop is end of life, but if you're looking for a good computer to run 3D CAD or design software, you may then be interested to know that I have now developed and released the worlds most comprehensive FREE benchmarking test for Autodesk Inventor with a global online leaderboard. See the announcement video here • InvMark for Autodesk I... and check out the leaderboard here invmark.cadac.... - the leaderboard is Autodesk focused but many characteristics could be applied to other vendors.
This is an overview of the product itself rather than performance testing a specific configuration of it. The HP Zbook 17 G5 is one of if not the highest quality mobile workstations on the market, and this specific configuration is one of the most powerful you can buy today.
FYI - HP did provide the laptop, but it was provided for reasons completely unrelated to KZbin, I made this video separately off my own back and HP don't even know nor expected a KZbin video from me. All opinions are completely my own and 100% true & honest.

Thank you so much for this video! I needed a mobile workhorse because of multiple softwares 2D and 3D running paralelly. Was about to purchase the Alienware 17 with i9 processor. The Dell showroom guy laughed at me when I told him I need a Quardo P4000 in a laptop. He said P4000's donlt fit in a laptop. Whereas this comes with it, plus a Xeon processor, which is better for 3D rendering. Would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks.

in my personal opinion - don't ever reduce the length of a review for a product such as this. it is a one of a kind on the market and the people who are interested in it are usually the type who want to know EVERYTHING there is to know about a product (especially if we're about to drop close to 3 G's on it)

Very true, I would spend a full hour listening to reviews before buying anything like this. And usually with purchases this serious people watch 5 reviews anyway which add up to a lot of time, so having it all in one 60+ minute video would be great. People who are interested in these products don't look for quick and easy info, they want to hear everything about it.

This video was for me, thanks for the overview. It gives me a good idea of what to look for today, that may be strong enough to last at least year before it gets superseded by the 'next big thing'. My HP desktop workstation is getting a little long in the tooth, and I would love to stick with HP, they never let me down. I pay for it, of course, but it is worth it to me as an independent consultant.

Are you sure someone hasn't taken a stick out? I can't remember now but I'd be very surprised if HP sold that as an option to only have 1 stick in, because 2 of the slots are on the reverse of the motherboard and I'm sure they were both populated in all configs... I could be wrong but I don't understand why they would sell a 1 stick layout

I'm that guy still wanting to use trackpoint, but just switched to a laptop without one. Enjoy yours! :-D ZBook 17 is truly a beast. It's the best of the best desktop replacement. If they could fit all of that into the ZBook Studio 15 x360 :-) The mobility made my final choice for the Studio 15 x360. But the ZBook 17 additional 2 slots for RAM, better cooling, better graphics were tempting :-) I think that in 17 you should easily get 4.6 GHz sustained on all cores with Xeon, for CPU-only intensive tasks. These new HP's have better thermals than any other laptops. For example - my Studio x360 has vents on the bottom, on the top, on the left, and on the right - all the sides. It is very unusual for a 15" laptop, yet it allows to push this machine to its limits.

This was probably great, but I wish Workstation manufacturers would compete in the keyboard and touchpad department. Touchpads shpuld ibe centered and ignore the entire thumbs, and the keyboard here should have scissor keys with large keytravel, have its home keys centered, be rid of all the media icons (ensuring that you do NOT have to press Fn to trigger a function key, media keys are for media consumer noobs only), and the layout should follow TKL. They certainly had the room to make a proper keyboard. PS. the trackpoint is there to turn off the touchpad, if the touchpad isn't rejecting palms efficiently enough. You're *supposed* to put your hands on the part in front of the keyboard in order to type. Under no circumstances can you have a random clicker and cursor mover in the only place your hand can be. I would have liked some usage reflections, such as noise idle and under load, and frames skipped for a 4K movie on KZbin. Unlike a benchmark, this tells you if the laptop is "nice to use" under light and medium loads.

What a great review, thank you! I'm looking to upgrade my 4 year old HP Pavilion (it has served me well) but really struggling now on dual screening, lots of lag happening with my 3D CAD (I use Civil 3D). Processor no doubt can be improved but 2nd screen was the big one. I have spent a dull night on the internet wondering if laptops are only made these days for 'gamers' until I eventually came across the Zbook 17 and then your perfect professional user focused review. It's convinced me! Thanks (and you're not on your own with open plan office views!). Cheers!

I'm still clinging on to my MacBook Pro 17" 2011 model running Parallels. I still don't understand why 7 years later, a more powerful and lightweight laptop for the same size is not available. The CD Drive adds more bulk and I always need to pack it in a backpack. At work, my Zbook 15 experience was non-functional thunderbolt 3 dock and inconsistent multi-monitor functionality. A patch much later fixed a lot of issues with thunderbolt 3, but the monitor settings like resolution would constantly change on me. Also, when I close the laptop lid on the Zbook, it wouldn't wake up when I opened it. It's hard to find good reviews on 17" laptops because Hipster Coders have taken over the market and they can code on tiny screens with tiny font while sitting in a bus. Keep these types of reviews coming, because 3D CAD is now the stepchild of laptop applications and you'd think 2018 would bring a better experience than my 2011 MacBook Pro, but it hasn't so far and I'm too scared to upgrade knowing all these thunderbolt 3, 3rd party hardware support, future upgradability, and missing I/O port issues.

@Neil, the Xeon E-2186M can go up to 4.8 GHz... BUT... there is a but... it can only get to 4.8 if you keep the CPU below 55 degrees Celsius... So its an extra boost above the 4.6 GHz turbo boost... Intel gave this extra boost a name but I cant find it anymore what they called it like... but I dont think 55 degrees in a laptop like this is do-able..

The specs are good but I will be hard pressed to ever but HP again. We bought a number of HP ZBook G3's for our engineers and I will be hard pressed to ever buy HP again. The amount of trouble we had with everything from drivers to broken motherboards was ridiculous. HP support was just plain bad. They did switch out one motherboard fairly quickly which fixed most (not all) of the issues on that computer. We sent in others for service and after some time it came back with the screen still not turning on (how can you even miss that). We have been reinstalling drivers from their auto-update, from their HP softpaq, from their homepage trying to find a stable combination of drivers. I dont know how many times their technicians have been here reinstalling something or swapping out something. After about half a year fighting with HP support we just gave up. They would not reimburse us for the massive amount of time we have had to put in for fixing and debugging. We still have screens that flicker, docks that needs manual attention to turn on and so on but we have reached a point where its annoying but workable. So me personally wont trust HP again in a good long while, which is sad since I like a lot of stuff about their computers. I hope you guys have had better experiences. I would recommend to never buy their computers at release. Wait for a bit and read the forums.

@@simontolstopyatenko7931 Seems likely, but HP has taken very little responsibility for it. They refused to compensate us in any way, except sending technicians to reinstall drivers. So I now have little faith in HPs hardware and drivers, and even less faith in their support.

Great review mate. Somehow still the only useful review about this laptop on KZbin. Have you been using it for your day to day since recording, had any issues with performance? I'm probably going to get one for my Design role doing Graphics, Motion Design and Video editing, pretty much pushing everything Adobe to the limit. Would you say the specs you've suggested here would be more than substantial if you do anything similar? Unable to acquire one with a p4200 through how IT works here, think it's much of a loss? Thanks again for the insight, unbelievably helpful.Would love to see the performance reviews!

Very informative review, thanks. I'm curious how this compares performance wise with your 1080 ti desktop workstation. I'm tempted by the Quadro P5200 for the 16GB memory but I'm also tempted by other laptop options that might have an i9-9900k with rtx 2080 laptop for similar or less money. I'd prefer the 11GB ti if it was laptop available. I predominantly use Autocad (large urban design layouts) and 3d solid modelling, 3ds Max with Vray and Photoshop and my office workstation is an i9-7980xe with 2 x 1080 ti so most of my rendering would be done in work. Which of your gpu's work best in Inventor? P5200 or 1080 ti? Thanks again.

Yea I agree, I was 100% expecting to hear stories from people who've had bad experiences with HP... I got the exact same response when I did videos on Dell stuff, I'd get the same if I did a Lenovo piece too... no one thing is perfect but after using this as my daily laptop for 2 weeks it's an absolute corker. I don't use a docking station though, I'm still not 100% sure why they're still relevant in this era other than for fixed power input... laptops now have as many ports as you'd reasonably need, I just don't see the reason for needing a docking station these days? Feel free to let me know though as I'm always open to hearing about real world use cases like that.

Thanks for a great video! Looking to replace my 15" Macbook Pro (2013) to use for 3d work (lots of modeling/rendering) and Lightroom editing, highres Photoshop retouching + some Premiere editing. I love the Macbook because of it's size, the build quality and the bright Retina screen. I mostly work on desktop workstations though (both a trashcan MacPro and a PC tower), but I kind of wish to have a laptop comparable with any of my desktop workstations.. just not sure which size to go for. I'm considering the the 4K Dreamcolor display (I often do a lot of colour critical work), but would this not be a good option for the smaller 15-inch laptop? The Macbook Pro runs really hot (very fast!), even when not doing any super-heavy work (f.e. Lightroom).. Would you consider the ZBook 17-inch before the Zbook 15-inch because of other reasons than the display size? For example, will the 17-inch be able to "work" full days better than the 15-inch (maybe because of thermal/heat or fan noise due to the smaller chassi)? Or is it ONLY the display size that really separates them (+some extra space for extra drives inside...)? Also, do the 15 vs 17-inch ZBooks perform equally well when connected to external displays using the HP dock? I won't be carrying it around too often, so weight isn't very important. Thanks again!

TFI, it would be awesome if you could make a video on the Lenovo P53 mobile workstation. It can be configured with a Xeon CPU and a Quadro RTX 5000. And it's a 15 inch workstation. 🤯

I have a w550s. Granted its a dual core but Lenovo decided all that extra computing power came at the expense of portability. They decided to merge the ultrabook with the mobile workstation. Should be more than sufficient for all but the most demanding of applications.

With a laptop like this, using it full time (docked with good air flow), how much performance are you giving up compared to a nice workstation desktop? I’m speaking to complex Inventor assemblies that give desktops some trouble. I have a 4 year old workstation that may get replaced soon...
@Neil3D
@Neil3D 5 жыл бұрын
Oooo that's an almost impossible question to answer! I mean it totally depends on which of the millions of desktops you're comparing it against, and what you're doing, but I'm planning on running it through my custom Inventor heavy stress tests along with a current HP Z Workstation so I should be able to answer that... stay tuned

Yea kinda, as long as they're from the same generation and not older... the bigger laptops can have bigger GPUs inside and fit more expansion slots but overall its the same unit but in a smaller size, often with the same CPU if they can cool it in the smaller chassis.

What about for games development
@Neil3D
@Neil3D 5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm games development is slightly outside of my area of expertise, but, as a powerhouse of a laptop this is the best it gets for any job... but games development might benefit from a GeForce card as any games that you create would help from being done on GeForce drivers? This is a Quadro based unit which is based on drivers that have no games optimisations at all. So if you want to test your games on it, it's probably not so good, but if UE4 and Unity support Quadro for development then yea it'll be amazing for that.

Hi Neil, With pain in my heart I just sent back the second HP ZBook 17 G6 with RTX3000 GPU. What a disappointment! I LOVE the looks, the power, the flexibility in upgrading and the near silent fans and the looks of this beast are awesome! What isn't ok is the annoying COIL WHINE this workstation series suffers from. This drives me and the person sitting next to me at the desk nuts. The dealer as well as the HP store here in The Netherlands are willing to sell, but when it comes to the solution of this problem, you have to lean back and wait patiently till some tech guy at HP production solves the motherboard issue with faulty power regulators/coils...... Did you encounter any problems concerning coil whine?? (see this review: forums.autodesk.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/1054228). Would LOVE to buy a third one that is assembled decently (one with loose screw and distorting speakers, the other with a plastic part of the lid not fitting well, both of them with terrible backlight bleeding) and without this coil whine. I invested lots of time, driving up and down to my dealer, mailing many times to HP store and calling many times with the Dutch helpdesk, all without the outcome you want when paying € 3.500 for a 17" laptop with mediocre display and no flawless assembly......
@Neil3D
@Neil3D 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man that’s news to me, I used mine for a full year and no coil whine issues at all...I just bought a Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 and that has reported coil whine problems too but I have none. I met up with HP this week at AU and they’re sending me the new Zbook for 2020 so I’ll definitely keep an ear open for that but I sure didn’t get any whine on the unit I had, I’ll 100% mention it if the next one does tho!

@@Neil3D Hi, thanks for reacting! I had 2 ones with the same problem and HP has issues with quality control after assembly. Otherwise the would have found the loose screw and not fitting plastic lid on the two models I bought. Sales isn't helpful neither and delegates me to tech department that delegates me to sales and so on.... I really would have loved to make a good review of a very nice machine but for now, both the ZBook AND the organisation behind it lack the customer oriëntation that I expect for a product this expensive...
