I have run the HP Omen and HP ZBook G7 Create Workstation through 14+ creator focused benchmarks covering video editing in Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, motion design, graphic design, photo editing, 3D modeling, and more. Which one should you buy?
Jumping right into the build quality both laptops have very different appearances. First off I am so happy that HP decided to redesign Omen 15 as it is a far more suitable design to be taken seriously at client meetings. It has a deep gray matte top cover and iridescent shape while the HP ZBook G7 however totes a very professional look with no frills or gamer vibes. It is an all-aluminum chassis with a big shiny Z on the top cover.
Right off the bat, concerning build quality, my votes swings toward the ZBook G7 with its aluminum top, bottom cover and Keyboard deck. The HP Omen contains some aluminum as well but it is only found on the keyboard deck. So as far as tough is concerned the ZBook is the tougher of the two. That’s not to say I don’t like the HP Omen. It has solid build quality, the ZBook is simply better in my opinion.
What about the ventilation on each laptop? Both the ZBook G7 and the HP Omen have generous vents for cooling. They both have vents on the bottom cover and on top of the keyboard deck. The HP Omen also has a vent behind the keyboard deck as well as the right side panel, whereas the ZBook has a vent on the left side panel.
The 2020 HP Omen 15 comes with a 15.6 inch FHD display that can reach 144Hz at a brightness of 320 nits with equally impressive color accuracy. The HP Omen 144Hz screen has a color gamut range of 99% sRGB - 72% Adobe RGB with an average Delta-E of around 15.3.
For a gaming laptop this is amazing. And at around give or take $1100 - $1400 depending on when you’re buying this laptop (as prices tend to vary) it is an insane deal.
According to my tests the HP ZBook with the FHD display can reach 413 nits at full-screen brightness and has a color gamut range of 99% sRGB - 79% Adobe RGB - 79% DCI-P3 with a Delta-E of 0.9. Being that this is HP’s creator Workstation I am a little disappointed by the absence of 100% Adobe RGB. This is an area I think they can make some improvements on moving forward. But as you can see the Delta-E is less than 1 at 0.9 which is a really solid indicator of not only an expansive color gamut range but excellent color accuracy when the colors are reproduced on the screen within that range.
Concerning the on-the-go capability of these two laptops the:
HP ZBook G7 weighs in at 3.84 Lbs at a thickness of 0.68 inches
Where as the HP Omen weighs in at 5.43 Lbs at a thickness of 0.89 inches
Concerning battery life the
The HP ZBook G7 will get roughly 9 Hours Web browsing / 6 - 7 hours Design and Video Editing out of its 76Wh battery.
Whereas the HP Omen will get roughly 5 - 6 Hours Web browsing / 3 - 4 hours Design and Video Editing with its 70.9Wh battery
The HP ZBook G7 I am reviewing comes with:
CPU: Intel 10th Gen Core i7-10750H (6 Cores 12 Threads)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q 8GB GDDR6
RAM: 16GB DDR4
Storage: 512GB SSD
Whereas the 2020 HP Omen 15 comes with:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 4800H (8 Cores 16 Threads)
GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6
RAM: 16GB DDR4
Storage: 256GB SATA SSD
If you’re looking for a high performance all-aluminum i7-10750H laptop with solid color accuracy, great benchmarks in all of the tests performed specifically beating out the HP Omen in Motion Design, 3D modeling, and the Adobe Design Suite, plus a distinguished build quality then I would pick up the HP ZBook G7.
However if you’re looking for a laptop with an aluminum Keyboard deck and dark mode styling that runs cool (but is a little noisy) while getting great benchmarks results in all of the tests I ran all packed within a laptop with one of the best keyboard and trackpad combinations I have ever felt on a gaming laptop all at roughly (prices may vary) $1000 less than the ZBook G7, than I would consider picking up the HP Omen 15.

Great comparison, Ben. I've used the Omen for years. I just bought the G7. Colors and white and brightness look great. The color saturation is intense though. I am afraid to use my SpyderX Elite because the HP technical white paper says their use of a spectrophotometer is much more accurate than a colorimeter. So do you have any idea how to lower saturation, or should I just trust the saturation level when I am processing photos (as a photographer)? HP's Zbook technical support has not idea on how to help me here. They say there is no way to calibrate the machine on the user's end because they went to such great lengths for accuracy straight out of the box for the end user. I just want to trust the machine. What do you think?

hello, i am trying to decide a buy laptop. i am not a creator, engineer but i need CPU power and a little GPU power because of the financial trading programs. These programs need H series CPU that have more core like 11800H/12700H CPU for algo trading. But i do not decide a work station or gaming PC . Legion 5 PRo, Dell XPS 15 , HP Zbook Power G9 or Fury ? can you give an advice? i need lolng term use ;thermal issues, stability and realibity is so important

@@jannybravo8429 Keep in mind that the HP Zbook 17 and the HP 17z are totally different machines. Zbooks are HP's top notch portables, while the 17z belongs to a tier that's lower than the Pavilions.
