Clear coating your plastic model can be stressful. Will it ruin the decals? Will it make the paint or chrome look fuzzy? What happens if it gets on the glass?
How do you apply a clear coat to a model?
Do you need an airbrush?
Watch this video to check out the easy to apply, low cost, no fumes, no fuss, no muss, no problem brush on clear coats available for your scale model.
See you at the bench!
A scale model is most generally a physical representation of an object that maintains accurate relationships between all important aspects of the model, although absolute values of the original properties need not be preserved. This enables it to demonstrate some behavior or property of the original object without examining the original object itself. The most familiar scale models represent the physical appearance of an object in miniature, but there are many other kinds.
Scale models are used in many fields including engineering, architecture, film making, military command, salesmanship, and hobby model building. While each field may use a scale model for a different purpose, all scale models are based on the same principles and must meet the same general requirements to be functional. The detail requirements vary depending on the needs of the modeler.
To be a true scale model, all relevant aspects must be accurately modeled, such as material properties, so the model's interaction with the outside world is reliably related to the original object's interaction with the real world.
Revell is a manufacturer of plastic scale models. The original American Revell merged with Monogram. In 2007, American Revell was purchased by Hobbico while the European Revell Germany separated from the American company in 2006 until Hobbico purchased it as well - bringing the two back together again under the same company umbrella. In 2017, Quantum Capital Partners took over operations of Revell after Hobbico declared bankruptcy.
Aluminum Model Toys, commonly abbreviated as AMT, was a Troy, Michigan-based company that manufactured various pre-assembled plastic promotional models starting in 1948, when attorney West Gallogly, Sr. started it as a side business. Later, a variety of kits became very popular. Most of the company's vehicle products were American cars and trucks in 1:25 scale. In the 1970s, hot rods, customs, trucks and movie and TV vehicles were also produced.
Because Gallogly had solid connections with Ford Motor Company, he was able to place his first models exclusively in Ford dealerships, starting a long promotional relationship (Cawthon 2002). Gallogly's first model was a 1947-1948 Ford Fordor sedan.
In 1949, injection plastic molding became available. After the first Ford aluminum promotional model was offered (Doty 2008, 89), aluminum was abandoned. Different colors of plastic could now be used, so the company name was quietly changed to AMT, which deemphasized the word "aluminum" (Cawthon 2002). For example, AMT's 1949 and 1950 Ford and Plymouth sedans were its first plastic models, along with the 1950 Studebaker coupe. These promos often had wind-up motors which could not be seen through the shiny silver-tinted windows. They had metal chassis and diecast metal chrome-plated bumpers, which were later replaced with chrome-plated plastic. Often, official factory paint colors were applied to the models. The company's first commercial products were pre-assembled plastic promotional models, which were only available through automobile dealerships,
In the early 1950s day-to-day operations of the company were turned over to George Toteff so that Gallogly could better attend to his law firm (Cawthon 2002). Model design was kept in-house, but molding was outsourced. Continental Plastics in Fraser, Michigan, was one of the companies contracted to mold AMT's models (Cawthon 2002).
Model Products Corporation, usually known by its acronym, MPC, was an American manufacturer of plastic scale model kits and pre-assembled promotional models popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Traditionally a Michigan company, since 2011 the MPC name has been part of Round 2 LLC of South Bend, Indiana. MPC's main competition was Aluminum Model Toys (AMT) and Jo-Han Models.

I found the Pledge Revive It at Walmart and have used that stuff on all of my models, even diecast ones, ever since you showed how to do it many videos ago. I've actually used Quick Shine on wood floors and remember it being somewhat milky. I think the Quick Shine will be a nice alternative if you can't find the Pledge, your model truck looks fantastic by the way and the Quick Shine seems to work just fine. When I restored a 1972 Roadrunner by MPC for a friend of mine, I clear coated the model. When I had the model all together I then used Pledge Revive It Floor Gloss on the model and applied liberally. I have a dedicated brush for applying the Pledge by the way. After a few days of naturally curing, I then used a marine polish on the model and, oh man did it ever gleam!!!! That model was so slick that I nearly dropped it. I only buffed it with a small piece of a cotton t-shirt and it had and still has such a beautiful shine. Thanks for all you do Chris, you're videos are very helpful, very informative, and very much appreciated!!! Thank you Sir!!!

I wanted to say thank you very much. I use Future to make washes for my miniatures. Last time I did a round of dipping I did not see all my large containers of products correctly. I have also been extremely busy with home improvements. So I have not painted and washed anything in months. It turned into a solid mass of India ink and pledge. I could only find it online for 50 bucks a pop. So hopefully the substitute will work if I don’t find any at my local farm and fleet.

I too have been using Pledge for years. The bottle I have now has been in my possession for maybe 5 or6 years and I noticed that it does not dry as quickly as it used to. I had the same problem with the original Future. After a few years it begins to degrade. The Future eventually stopped curing and remained tacky for weeks, so I had to switch to the Pledge. Now that Pledge is gone (my old bottle is only quarter used) I bought Quich Shine at Walmart. They only had the large bottle ($11.50). I've been using it on some modeling projects, experimenting with it. Yes, it is more liquid than Pledge but it dries to a better finish than Pledge, without bubbles. The only trouble with Quick Shine is that it's not as robust as Pledge. If you run a fingernail gently over a finished and cured surface, you will leave a mark. Press a bit harder and the Quick Shine will peel. It also takes longer to cure than Pledge. Touching it and rubbing it with the finger does not have any effect. I have not tried air-brushing it yet but I don't think it would be a problem. Mixing it with acrylic water-based paints was no problem also.

thank you for this ! I had been using FUTURE but my supply is now EMPTY. I had been considering QUICK SHINE but now know it is the replacement. Lowes carry's this stuff for about $8. Enough to last years. One thing not mentioned, once models are coated and fully cured ( dried) if an accident happens like paint spilling on the model, it can be wiped off with thinner without affecting the Acrylic clear coat ! ask me how I know !

I am so glad I found your channel and this video. I'm disabled and model from bed and can't use a airbrush or aerosols. I've been searching to see if I can use floor polish with a brush and finally got my answer. Thanks so much for the great content on your channel. I have a question for you, can I use the floor polish with a brush to seal in my decals, do a pin wash or weathering then apply a flat coat with a brush for my military models I don't want a gloss finish with? Will brushing on a flat coat reactivate the floor polish and mess everything up? Thank you so much for any help and I've got plenty of great videos to watch and catch up on.

I just bought a bottle of that floor polish you demonstrated but haven't had a chance to try it yet. What do you clean your brush with after using that stuff? I don't think I missed that but if I did I apologize. I haven't seen that bottle of future for probably 20 years and unbelievably I just found it in the cellar behind some really old automotive lacquer paint from the late 70s. The bottle did turn yellow but the polish is clear

The rules of supply/demand have the Pledge up to $37 per 27 oz. bottle now. If a person wants to feel better about it, I did some math and that is still WAY cheaper by volume than the Tamiya clear. (If only Johnson Wax made paint for models...27 oz. each color for $8.99.)

I think there are some 30+ year old unopened bottles of Future (maybe it's Klear) under the kitchen sink. It will work fine once they are cleaned. The floor polish is harmless to almost anything it's put on. If it was messing up surface the people that use it on their floors would go nuts.

Yes it does. It's made for kitchen floors and it's doubtful people are turning their furnaces up to 100 to dry their floor polish.

I have always sprayed it on. The issue I have with replacements is the ingredients. Future clearly claim 'acrylic' as the main ingredient. The others do not - they say 'polymer', which could mean anything. Its a crap shoot. My bottle of Future just ran out, too. I'm in panic mode. I have some of the Walmart stuff in the cupboard, for my floor. I'm afraid to even try that.

Use with caution. I applied this Quick Shine on my Evergreen polystyrene clear plastic windows. It basically ruined them...I brushed it on as in the video, I got wavy pool spots on the windows when it dried, which was a disaster. The only thing I can explain is it reacted with the Novus polish I had cleaned the clear plastic prior to the Quick Shine. So I tried it on unpolished plastic, same result. Maybe this is acceptable to some, but it looks horrible as far as I'm concerned.

HELP please! I just coated my first model in 25 years and it has dried to a dull finish. Any ideas on how to shine or strip it without damaging the paint underneath?

I just tried this on a hood painted with enamel paint and after a day, its foggy. Any idea why? It went on easy and had a nice shine, but became foggy. What did I do wrong? Thanks
