The Chevrolet Impala is a full-sized car built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and was among the better-selling American-made automobiles in the United States.
For 1958 GM was promoting their 50th year of production, and introduced anniversary models for each brand; Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Chevrolet.[13] The 1958 models shared a common appearance on the top models for each brand; Cadillac Eldorado Seville, Buick Limited Riviera, Oldsmobile Starfire 98, Pontiac Bonneville Catalina, and the Chevrolet Bel-Air Impala.
The Impala was introduced for the 1958 model year as top-of-the-line Bel Air 2-door hardtops and convertibles. From the windshield (A) pillar rearward the 1958 Bel Air Impala differed structurally from the lower-priced Chevrolet models. Hardtops had a slightly shorter greenhouse and longer rear deck. The wheelbase of the Impala was longer than the lower-priced models, although the overall length was identical. Interiors held a two-spoke steering wheel and color-keyed door panels with brushed aluminum trim. No other series included a convertible.
The 1958 Chevrolet models were longer, lower, and wider than their predecessors.[14] The 1958 model year was the first with dual headlamps. The tailfins of the 1957 were replaced by deeply sculptured rear fenders. Impalas had three taillights each side, while lesser models had two and wagons just one. The Impalas included crossed-flag insignias above the side moldings, as well as bright rocker moldings and dummy rear-fender scoops.
The standard perimeter-type frame was abandoned, replaced by a unit with rails laid out in the form of an elongated "X". Chevrolet claimed that the new frame offered increased torsional rigidity[12] and allowed for a lower placement of the passenger compartment. This was a transitional step between traditional construction and the later fully unitized body/chassis; the body structure was also strengthened in the rocker panels and firewall.[15] However, this frame was not as effective in protecting the interior structure in a side-impact crash as a traditional perimeter frame.
A coil spring suspension replaced the previous year's rear leaf springs, and an air ride system was optional.
A 283 cu in (4,640 cc) engine was the standard V8, with ratings of 185 hp (138 kW), 230 hp (170 kW), and 250 hp (190 kW) with optional Rochester Ramjet fuel injection. Two versions of Chevrolet's 348 cu in (5,700 cc) V8, its first big-block, were also optional, producing 250 hp (190 kW) with a single four-barrel carburetor and 280 hp (210 kW) with three two-barrels.[16]
In total, 55,989 Impala convertibles and 125,480 coupes were built representing 15% of Chevrolet production. The 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air Impala helped Chevrolet regain the number-one production spot in this recession year

When I was about 5 or 6, ( early 60's ). I saw a version of this kit at the grocery store, back then they used to sell model kits, it was opened and it was molded in light blue and had separate doors. At that time I've never seen a kit with so many parts and it was in the old AMT box art with the cool kat logo. Mom wouldn't get it, said I was too young, and older brother said that it being open meant it probably got parts missing. But I never forgot that kit. I believe it's what help me get interested in modeling.

Today this would be a.monster car. At the time I wouldn't have wanted to build it as a NASCAR because of that X'ed frame. But the future is there: Those are indeed the famous "truck arms" on the rear suspension.

This is a great kit and welcome re-released. I once grafted the steering front end onto a '69 Olds 442 and used that 409 in a hotrod. My brother built his as a custom using massive treaded tires from a 1/20 Can Am McLaren. A great decal sheet, worth the cost to use on other models if you build it stock. No instrument decals is a bummer. First year for Impala -- great to have it on the shelf again.

I love the fact that a crankshaft is included so that it can be glued into place never to be seen again , Why do they do this ? When I was a wee one back in the 1950s and 60s a lot of model kits used to include a package of flocking powder for the interior , I wonder why that isn't done anymore ?

Haven't found anything yet, but one bottle has lasted me 6+ years building two kits per week so if you have any left it will be a long time before you need another.

Chris, you got the gold-plated trim right. Good eye! I really your application of rust, too. I would have added some to the headlight eyebrows-- all Chevs used to rust there. You might also have scraped the side trim off one the doors and used a micro drill to make the now-visible attachment points. A tip for the dash is to apply silver, red, black etc. to knobs and controls using a toothpick tip -- much easier than trying to use a brush. The silver Prismatic pencil is great.

Always love to see how you weather these old cars! I know this is an old kit but it's an interesting one. Looks like the opening doors fit properly here too, which is more than I can say for the old AMT 16th scale 1964 Mustang hardtop.

Nicely done. Do you ever paint with an air brush?

No, I own them but only need to use them if I mix a custom color which isn't often with all the sprays out these days.

I've been watching your videos for some time now. I really enjoy your work and commentary. How do you feel about the bare metal foil?

I've seen Chris mask trim and use a chrome pen to do the trim but yours is good question.

Awesome build Chris! Thanks for sharing. Always learn and get more ideas from your vids. Question. How do you get your badges so crisp and clear?
