Kit comes with 2 color 8 page instructions, educational booklet, updated decals, and molded in Black, Silver, Blue and Orange. Officially licensed! Over 240 parts
The Allison T56 is an American single-shaft, modular design military turboprop with a 14-stage axial flow compressor driven by a four-stage turbine. It was originally developed by the Allison Engine Company for the Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport[3] entering production in 1954. It has been a Rolls-Royce product since 1995 when Allison was acquired by Rolls-Royce. The commercial version is designated 501-D. Over 18,000 engines have been produced since 1954, logging over 200 million flying hours.
The T56 turboprop, evolved from Allison's previous T38 series,[5] was first flown in the nose of a B-17 test-bed aircraft in 1954.[5] One of the first flight-cleared YT-56 engines was installed in a C-130 nacelle on Lockheed's Super Constellation test aircraft in early 1954.[6] Originally fitted to the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, the T56 was also installed on the P-3 and E-2/C-2 aircraft, as well as civilian airliners such as the Lockheed Electra and Convair 580.[5]A major setback occurred when a T56-A-1 engine delivered to Lockheed in May, 1953, produced only 3,000 hp, not the required 3,750 shp needed for the C-130. A further setback occurred in August 1953 when an engine being tested failed after only 6 ½ hours run time. A redesign of the engine failed during testing in September of the same year. A second redesign was more successful. Evolution of the T56 has been achieved through increases in pressure ratio and turbine temperature. The T56-A-14 installed on the P-3 Orion has a 4591 shp rating with a compression ratio of 9.25:1 while the T56-A-427 fitted to the E-2 Hawkeye has a 5250 shp rating and a 12:1 compression. In addition, the T56 produces approximately 750 lbs of thrust from its exhaust.[7]A marinised turboshaft version, the 501K engine, is used to generate electrical power for all U.S. Navy cruisers and destroyers currently in commission.[4]An engine enhancement program to reduce fuel consumption and decrease temperatures was approved in 2013, and the US Air Force expects to save $2 billion and extend the C-130 fleet life.[8]The Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules which first flew in 1996, has the T56 replaced by the Rolls-Royce AE 2100, which uses dual FADECs (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) to control the engines and propellers.[9] It drives new six-bladed scimitar propellers from Dowty Rotol.

The Allison Prop-Jet engine kit was originally issued by Revell (not Renwal) back in 1959 and came with an electric motor to power the engine.

I bought this kit for my dad (who just retired after 47 years as an aircraft mechanic for American Airlines) for Christmas, and with the pictures of a kid and description using the words educational and such on the box I was kind of afraid it would be overly simplistic. I'm really glad I saw this video. It put my mind at ease. Hopefully one day the company that made this kit will make some kits based on modern commercial jet engines, because this one is incredible in the detail.

Great kit and build. Correction: This kit was originally designed and issued by Revell in 1960. While Renwal issued many "visible" kits, this is not one of them; Renwal had nothing to do with this particular kit. The original Revell issue retailed in 1960 for $4.98. They also originally sold a version with additional motorizing parts for $5.98.

When I got home from work I called him to ask him about the kit, well he already got it. As it turns out my dad is also a fan of your channel, and watch the build and ordered it yesterday. We both agreed the fantastic work you do Chris on all of your kits. A father and son both love your channel. Great work again.

I just finished building one of these. It took me 30 hours or more. I found the kit to be extraordinarily difficult and fussy. The instructions were sometimes very vague. I did manage to get enough fit that the turbine and prop do spin, but I would call this model beyond expert difficulty. I plan some painting and putting it on a display base. When I was young we flew Frontier Airlines Convair 580s and I fondly remember these engines and their power and especially sound. The Connies leaped into the air and easily traversed the Rocky Mountains. Kudos on your video.

This is a great kit! I just received mine today and am looking forward to the build. I was a turboprop propulsion technician for six years in the USAF, at Pope AFB, in the late '8s-early '90s. I worked in the engine shop doing build up, ran the turbine shop, and also ran the prop shop, before working on the flightline and in the phase docks, conducting scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. So, I'm VERY familiar with this engine/prop combo. The kit is about as detailed as they could make it. Your enthusiastic video was fun, too! My only negative comment would be your poor use of nomenclature throughout the video, but, then, you didn't build these for a living, like I did. Mine is going to be detailed as an in-service engine, with the appropriately painted parts, including combustion and exhaust coloration. Looking forward to building this fine kit. Thanks for the fun video!

Nice build, I've built this model twice, if you put lots of care into massaging the blades and veins between them, will result in a incredible model. I spin it at 14000 rpm with a electric motor with a universal joint connected to it..the secret is to use minimal oil, every where It spins. Doesn't hurt the plastic. The one I have now is 20 years old and yes, it still will spin at 14.000 rpm at no problem. I have a speed controller for it. It sounds like the real thing and I can close the doors to it and run it. A incredible kit!

One thing that caught my attention was at 11:50 where the instruction sheet shows the assembly of the "accessories;" specifically the "fuel control main body" and the "fuel pump." These parts look a lot like the "1/25 scale Revell Parts Pack Dream Car Experimental Turbine Engine," (#C1104) from the early 1960's, as do other parts from this kit that provide details. If so, Revell was an early pioneer in the art of "repurposing" and "greeblies." Hopefully, Atlantis will also release the "Dream Car" Experimental Turbine Engine and other retro "Parts Pack" accessories in the near future. Thanks for posting this!

@Etherdave

There is some play to the planetary gears, owing to just a little too much free space; drilling small dimples into the rear centers will allow small shot to be used as bearings. This will improve the gearbox action and partially eliminate 'clattering', but this portion of the model is easily the most complex and requires above all else careful trimming, cleaning, and sanding of the parts. Telescoping brass tubing may be used for bearings on either end of the turbines, and may reduce friction somewhat. The most common issue I've seen is improperly seated turbine vanes; just one of these things will seize the turbines if it is in too close contact with the moving parts. Also, make darn sure the vanes go in the right places... they're not all numbered for nothing! Make no assumptions and follow the instructions and you should do well.

Glad you got a flash free kit, I on the other hand I got a kit that was full of flash and a number of parts that were broken and the part numbers on the spur were hard to read because you can see .TWO different set of numbers on the tree which was making the build very hard to do. Had to look at the manual to find the right part to work on (must be numbers from the 1961 model, and the new 2019 model, they were stamped with the numbers on top of each other, )but iam glad to see this model back. I too have wanted one for a long time. So it is going to take me a lot of sanding to get the parts to work. oh well :)

I can only guess you got unlucky and had a bad mold or miscast kit by the factory, no issues here and no double numbers. Odd. If it's that bad as you say send Atlantis a pic and maybe they can help you.
@davidfifer4729
@davidfifer4729 4 жыл бұрын
Some flash is to be expected from 60-year-old molds although mine is pretty free of flash. The two part numbers in a few instances is not new or unique to this Atlantis reissue. It was the same in the original 1960 kit of which I have two for comparison; Revell was just a little sloppy adding part numbers to the mold back in the day. The part numbers (and indeed, the instruction text and illustrations) in the original Revell release and the new Atlantis release are identical .

The original kits came with a battery pack and motor. It’s too bad they didn’t re-released these kits with that feature. A buddy of mine’s brother built one back in the 1970s that was motorized and it was so cool watching it turn! Any idea where we could possibly get ahold of one of the old instruction sheets showing the motor? In this day and age small electric motors are found everywhere and with 3D printing you could make your own battery pack container.
@Etherdave
@Etherdave Жыл бұрын
The re-release is expensive enough without the motorization, although Atlantis did re-release several of the 'Snoopy' series kits with this feature intact, using Mabuchi-style single axle electric motors. You will want an engine like this, but in the 3-12 vdc range, to be powered by two 'C'-type battery cells. The real shame here is that the extra plastic parts are no longer extant in the kit, thus the original motorization is now rather difficult to achieve. A motor housing can be fabricated from telescoping styrene tubing, which should friction-fit to the hole at the rear of the gearbox (a hatch, part 39 'Cover plate', is provided for when motorization is not desired). You will still need a suitable pinion gear, likely a 10-12 tooth model, which will engage the teeth on the inside rear of the Bull gear (29). A suitable battery housing can be fabricated from tubing, scavenged from some other battery-driven gadget, or purchased from an electronics hobby store. A second option would be to mount a dual-axle slot car motor inside the compression turbine, using the rear end of part 40 'Rotor drum' and part 56 'Rotor drum end cap' to create a snug mounting for the motor. Part 55 'Compressor tie bolt' will then have to be modified to link to the dual-axle motor, and provide linkage to the combustion chamber. Wires from the motor can be routed straight back through part 110 'Rotor bearing plate', and exit the engine somewhere in the vicinity of part 107 'Compressor diffuser and spray shield'. If you want to get fancy, routing the wires through parts 126 and 124, 'Fuel flow meter bracket' and 'Temperature datum valve' respectively, will allow you to exit the wires through two very nice holes engineered in part 125 'Datum valve bracket', and then to the battery compartment of your choice. Mounting an electric motor in the center of this model kit reduces torque load greatly, and eliminates the need for a visible, external motor housing. Careful trimming and cleaning of the gearbox gears and the turbine sections will also greatly ease the working of this mechanism; I have found that when the moving parts are carefully cleaned and finished, lubrication of the parts is unnecessary. Cheers.

Another great video! I just want to comment on your (and Atlantis') choice of petroleum based lubricants. I have found that these lubricants can cause polystyrene kit plastic to disintegrate. This first happened to me on a Visible V8 build in the late sixties, and has occurred several times since. I switched to powdered graphite for a working build of the paddle wheeler Clairmont (Lindberg; ex. Pyro) several years ago. Everything still works great with no signs of deterioration, with a nice scale "grease" sheen to boot!

A great kit. I'm trying to finish up the turbine section #28 and am stumped. I can't figure out how parts 169, 171 and 172 are supposed to match up. I see slotted knobs on 169 flange, but they don't seem to make any mating sense with the same number of protrusions on 171. And it looks like 171 and 172 have a slight friction fit with their respective tapers. I could use some advice on this. Thanks, Al.
@davidfifer4729
@davidfifer4729 4 жыл бұрын
The six pairs of protrusions around the circumference of part 169 do not mate but rather merely align with the six protrusions around the forward face of part 171. See the 18:18 mark of the video for a good view of how the three parts look when assembled. Just line them up as illustrated in the instruction sheet, press them together, and cement.

It it possible to do some modifications to make it run continuously? For example, I’m thinking of 3d printing some extra parts to attach it to a dc motor to make it run by itself at a reasonable speed ?

You know, it would be nice to mention in the instructions that you should leave a slight gap between the prop spinner and each prop blade. I find myself investigating that very thing including your site here. The instruction say to put a drop of glue on the end of each planetary gear, but to do that and press each blade snug against the prop spinner you would not have free movement. It would cement the blades to the spinner. It had me wondering.Please address that. Thank you

We in the aviation industry don't call that type of turbine engine a jet prop. We call them turbo prop engines. When it's for a heilo, for a commercial airliner APU or a ground power unit we call them turbo shaft engines. Other than that, that T-56/501 is one HELL of an engine.

@hpiguys Workshop ... Thanks for this video.... Subbed... I bought this model probably 20 years ago. I took the time to sand all the compressor blades, turbine blades and stators with 800 grit sand paper. The lube I used was white mineral oil.... just a few drops on each bearing surface. I didn't get that ratchety sound at all. Turned so smoothly. Of all the models I've built over the years, that was my pride and joy. I had plans to run it with a rubber band and a small DC motor, but alas... a certain 3 year old little girl got her mitts on it, and it is no more. It was painted with Tamiya metallic paint... the buff and shine kind. I spent a month building it, and it was so worth the time. I was lucky and found them for sale on the www.monstersinmotion.com web site (the only place I could find it in 2018... I want to say). I just haven't had time to sit down and build it yet. Took them a few months to ship it as they were waiting on stock, but it was delivered, and I plan on building this one in the same way. Mine was nearly silent after I finished it when you turned it. If this replacement is anywhere near as well cast as the original, I'll be near ecstatic. hpiguys Workshop is not exaggerating when he says this is a detailed and amazing model. At least the original was. If this re-issue is as good as the original, I'll be so happy! Thanks for posting this. It took me about 4 years of searching for this model, including some partially completed ones on E-bay for over $100.00 . Ummmm ya... you probably glued parts you shouldn't have.... no thanks. The original was a Revell, but looking at this re-issue .... it looks just as good! :) Think I'll put it in acrylic display box this time out of reach of everyone (lol)

Don't USE ANY PAINT, I built one way back when it first came out and the electric motor was unable to turn the thing over, Don't remember the original Revell instructions saying anything about Vaseline, low viscosity adhesive would have helped. The great thing about building this kit I was the only in my school who half understood how a jet engine worked.
