Couple of thoughts as a fellow HPSP student: 1) The monthly stipend is slightly higher if you have dependents. 2) with dependents, you also receive housing and grocery allowance during the active-duty tour. Not sure if it’s the same without. 3) If you commission very close to starting med school as I did, there is a pay delay. You won’t be paid right when school starts.

Student Physician Network I can list a few things : 1. Very frequent deployments that are not fruitful in terms of operating. Skill degradation is a major issue 2. Low case volume and complexity stateside so not much better when home 3. Poor pay. Bonuses have not increased in almost 30 yrs. not even adjusted for inflation 4. Headache of now being assigned to FORSCOM units with leaders who have no clue how to use you. You now have even more pointless training exercises year around further hurting operative time 5.Administrative headaches and clipboard carrying nurses in charge that have zero clue about your specialty 6. List goes on n on

I need a straight up answer please. If a person gets accepted into Neuro Surgery and they decide flat out that that’s their specialty and “nothing” can change their mind, but the Air Force says they need general doctors and want you to go that rout. Can the they forcefully change your choice for you (you don’t change it yourself they do without your consent)?
@StudentPhysicianNetwork
@StudentPhysicianNetwork 4 жыл бұрын
As far as i know. NO they cannot, but you still need to be able to match in that specialty. If I remember there is only 1 neurosurgery spot in the airforce.... if you don't match you'll get put into an internship year (probably general surgery) and can reapply next year. If you don't match the mext time your only option is to become a GMO or flight surgeon. This is where you can get into trouble and get put behind. It is very similar to civilian, but only in civilian if you don't match you dont have a job at all and you'll be in $200,000 in debt. That is the difference.

You need to start when you go to college and your number 1 priority will be getting into medical school. After you get into medical school you can worry about HPSP in the military. I would recommend getting in contact with a premeditated advisor in college as soon as possible to make sure you are on the right track.

Does HPSP cover tuition in addition to the stipend? And how many years of service are required?
@StudentPhysicianNetwork
@StudentPhysicianNetwork 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it covers tuition and fees. You owe 1 year for every year you receive a scholarship & 1 year for every year of residency. BUT residency and scholarship time commitments are paid back SIMULTANEOUSLY (meaning the time you actually owe is whatever is longer med school or residency) For example, if I have a 4 year scholarship and go into a 5 year residency, I owe 5 years. Hope this helps

What would it mean to be deployed as a military physician? Is it working at a military hospital abroad? My biggest concern being head of a young family is whether this scholarship would end up separating me from my family. No one ever seems to answer this, though I know I have heard of military doctors being deployed (as one would expect.) I just want to know what to expect so I can judge freedoms versus service and just be prepared for what military doctor life is actually like.

I am working along through my CBT trainings, and there are so many videos and modules that I have just zoomed through as fast as I could to get them done. Many of them are random, like about the Air Force involvement in different wars. I just watched the introductory video again, and it suggested that I take notes in the pdf note taker because I would be held accountable for this information at OTS. How much of the CBT trainings are truly relevant for Commissioned Officer Training (COT)? What will I be learning during lectures at COT? I thought we primarily learned the OTSMAN material? I am just concerned because I don’t want to be tested on all this material later, but need to know if that’s the case.
@StudentPhysicianNetwork
@StudentPhysicianNetwork 5 жыл бұрын
So if I remember right the CBT trainings werent exactly that important, but more so that you just preview them before attending. Most of the stuff will be covered again during OTS. When you attend OTS, you will be taking classes most of the day in a lecture hall. All of that material is important for the exams you are required to pass with an 80% average. The exams can be tricky, but if you pay attention and take notes you'll be just fine! You will also be taking an OTSMAN test too, but that does not count toward your exam average. Learning the OTSMAN is more important to know so you dont get yelled at as much. Hope this helps!
