Thank you so much for this video. Before I knew I about the HPSP scholarship I knew I have always wanted to serve in the military. Knowing this is an option for me when I get to Med School is a blessing. I think this is a great opportunity to serve while practicing medicine and changing many people’s lives. I definitely have a lot of work to do in order to meet the physical requirements, which I know I can accomplish!😊👏🏽🙌🏽

Great info! The big downside, though, is the pay as an attending. It is ABYSMAL compared to what you’d make as a civilian doctor. Even family medicine doctors make around 30% less, more than 50% less for higher paying specialties. There are literal peer-reviewed studies on this, look them up! I did the math when I started getting recruiter emails. Even accounting for the signup bonus, school stipends, higher residency pay, saved capital and interests on student debt, free health care, tax incentives, etc., you still come short around $200K-600K after your four years of commitment. The losses just compound from there if you decide to stay. Definitely only do it if you want to be part of the military. Otherwise, civilian doctors will be better off in the end, even if they’re initially drowning in several hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loans.

Hey, you can do multiple HPSP’s (you don’t have to apply to one branch even if the recruiter says you can’t) but the army and navy have more opportunity (slots) than Air Force. HOWEVER- I’ve heard Air Force is cushier, but it also depends on where you wanna be. Navy is the ocean (Florida, CA, Rhode Island, anywhere coastline). Air Force is is mostly dessert (Nevada, Idaho, Utah, etc) . Army is in muggy land or mountains (, Kansas , CO, Texas, Alabama, etc).

I am interested in the program, but I have a couple of questions about residency. I have a dog, which is why I am looking at the HPSP route versus the Uniformed Services University. If I am single at the time and I want to match into a military residency, would I have to live in the dorms or would I be able to immediately live off base to bring my dog with me. Any tips about having a dog in the military, in general, would also be appreciated.

The time you'll spend away from home studying in medical school, in clerkships, and on away rotations is the same between USUHS and HPSP. That statement doesn't make much sense. I am HPSP, active duty with a dog. I'd find a friend or S.O who can watch your dog while your away. Edit: I know plenty of people at USUHS who lived off base with their dog during medical school.

I’m leaning towards Army heavily, because Air Force doesn’t hold a lot of military residency, for the reason of retirement. That’s a big determining factor for me. I’ve seen they defer AF up to 50% of the time for residency, while Army is 98% residency match to a military residency. Big deal also you have limited career mobility in AF as they own no fellowships all of them are owned by army/navy. Just something to think about as I did

I understand you decided to do 20yrs active duty, but if I wanted to do just 4yrs for HPSP the decided if I do it in residency or after residency or is it my choice (I got a little confused )? Also what field are you thinking about going in?

The 4 years of service for the HPSP does not include residency. But, if you do a military residency, it can count towards the retirement benefit timeline, which is where the 20 years comes in. So whether you do a military residency or not, you have to at least do the 4 years of service after residency if you are in the 4 year program.
