My local orchestra (Dallas Symphony Orchestra) performed this when I was 17-years-old (in 2009) and I'll never forget it. I went the week of my birthday. The organ blasted me back against my seat as I was overwhelmed with involuntary tears of joy and triumph. The notes soared as the orchestra seemingly bathed the entire symphony hall with light, swept space clean, and left nothing but the joy of an unobstructed effort.

Well said. I have similar experiences with such music in concert halls, especially when I sit relatively close where the sound is louder. The ending of Shostakovich 5th is similar. But the timpani is coupled with a bass drum which makes it even more overwhelming.

Good words. I experienced similar in Prague some years ago when I sat in front of Prague Philharmonic, and they were playing Richardt Strauss "Also sprach Zarathustra"! Suddenly, without the slightest "telling me" teardrops ran down my face...and I was completely in the hands of the music and a wonderful orchestra!

First time I saw this (I had never heard of it before) was w/ the San Fran. Symph. many years ago w/ Jan Pascal Tortilier as the conductor. It blew me away so I pretty much memorized it; I've seen it many times since and I get so into it that I end up mimicking the kettle drum player during many parts. One day at Disney Hall in L.A. I sat behind the orchestra, and just happened to be sitting next to June Lockhart, and after it was over she said: "how can you do that ?.....you knew all the parts !"

@EnricoMRemondini3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely, the transition from the end of 3rd movement into the 4th one , with the orgue incipit is the best part of all the concert, along with the 4 hands piano shortly after the beginning of the 4th movement. I enjoy comparing that bit in various interpretations and I have found out that some make use of a firm heystroke at the end of the sequence (played by the right piano player) which becomes the "sparking signal" for the whole orchestra (orgue first) to move on... Possibly the best conductor out there right now. He re-imagines the works he conducts and they come out sounding almost new again. He also seems to get the strongest, most involved, most emotional playing from the orchestra. His Mozart symphonies on Harmonia Mundi show the same. He pays attention to the details and brings out new sonorities we don't often get to appreciate in those works we have heard one hundred times or more, and though not slow, he does not rush the orchestra through passages most conductors seem to pay little attention to and hurry through.

An epic performance, masterly, once again, from this fabulous orchestra. Thank you so much. This symphony is up there with Beethoven and Wagner. Simply sublime.
@garydlloyd77187 ай бұрын
Why is this performance so amazing? Part of it is the slower tempo in parts. The first movement is almost 12 minutes long even when subtracting 30 seconds between the beginning of the video and the first entrance of the orchestra. Both Paul Paray and Charles Munch made famous recordings that are now frequently cited as references. The first movement in both of these recordings is about 10 minutes long. So how much difference does it make when another recording is almost two minutes longer? The answer is absolutely huge. One conductor who was known as for interpreting things much slower is Sergiu Celibidache. Listeners are wildly divided over his interpretations, but for me some of them are quite amazing. In this recording, Riccardo Minasi in my opinion is doing much the same thing. There is so much detail, so many things that I have never heard from any other conductor. After at least a dozen listenings there is no other interpretation that I want to hear. He stops time. Not only am I mesmerized by what he is doing, it immediately pushed me to explore everything else I can find by Riccardo Minasi. I think this may be the slowest performance I have been able to find, and I have done quite a bit of checking. The miraculous part is that it seems to go on forever and at the same time it seems to be over in almost no time at all. I was out walking while listening last night and about 38 minutes of music went by so fast that I couldn't believe it. Let's add to this fact that this marvelous orchestra plays as well as any orchestra I have ever heard, both in live performances and on recordings. What should we mention first? The strings? The woodwinds? The brass? The percussion? The whole group is a wonder! The recording quality is incredible. And as a bonus to all the rest, look at the way the video was shot. I find this whole thing an absolute miracle. I would say that this performance is one of the ten best I have heard in my lifetime, and I would not pick any other as superior. The fact that it is live is absolutely stunning.
