@@ludo4961 I tend to agree, though Russian music is in the DNA of Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic to such an extent that to my ears few achieve what they can and do. Bernstein delivers a fine interpretation, but, again to my ear, misses what the Russians call 'iziuminka', the French a 'je ne sais quoi' that raises the hairs on the back of one's neck and elevates the performance beyond even the extraordinary. Claudio Abbado pushes the envelope like no other non-Russian. Now, I would be foolish to insist that Messrs Abbado and Temirkanov have a monopoly on interpreting this work. I feel the same way. In fact, my husband and I live in the U.S. and decided to visit Frankfurt just to hear this orchestra. And this is the concert we attended. It was thrilling.

Excelente Sinfonía!!!!!! Junto a la 4ta. Y 6ta. Son de mi Agrado, me gusta Tchaikovsky por qué en estas Sinfonías le sacan toda la Energia y Conocimiento a los Musicos y Director, para convertirlas en Hermosas Melodias.....

He has performed this work many times, but this Frankfurt performance was just the best ever, so exciting and romantic, and weren't the orchestra thrilled also? Bravo to all.

This symphony is a wonderful example of how a master of composition can create greatness out of the mundane. I'm talking about the theme on which the whole work is based - it's really a rather trite series of notes, but Tchaikovsky transforms it into something magical.

@@karllieck9064 The fact that the 8-note theme which opens the symphony is hardly a piece of sparkling melodic invention, now is it? Duh, da-da duh, da-da duh, duh.

4:35. Great brass scene! First the camera focuses on the horns in the foreground (dun dun dun dun!), then moves forward on the trombones (dun dun dun dun!), and then the tuba. The cameraman knew the score well.

Thank you, Maestro Honeck! You've made a 63-year-old thrill once again to a familiar lifetime-favorite. The clarity of enunciation in the orchestration makes me imagine that Tchaikovsky heard it in his head this way. And I finally understand how the Waltz fits in with the other three movements. Bravo!

I'm simply speechless and intimidated from the explosion at 13:27... It's like an appalling war cry: in a moment the accumulated power bursts with violence. Not all the interpretations of this piece are so powerful!

Rehearsal letters on sheet music to divide sections, have no effect on the music but handy to use during rehearsal. The Italian terms announce change in tempo.
