He and I were next door neighbours for seven years. I live 4th floor, he lived in the 2nd. We could often hear him practice in the evening, very softly with his digital piano so not to disturb anybody. Jesus, I would have paid entrance to sit and listen to him practice! :-) - Not only was he a genius musician, but he also was a wonderful person, he loved to laugh, he had no star behaviour at all. We miss you, Lars!

Thanks for the beautiful anecdote. I am not surprised by his gentleness. A huge loss for humanity and the music world. May he rest in peace. The story touches me deeply since I lost my beloved closest bro Roberto to lymphoma as well. I grieved Lars' death because it brought such a flood of memories.

@@Scriabin_fan I can't say for Skyrim, but while listening to Lars' performance, I was filled with the longing so characteristic of my love of Brahms. He evokes memory and nostalgia, producing a sad, dusky light and autumnal feeling for life, or rather from it. And like Brahms' music, the moments life follows, the level it finds by utter dint of gravity, add up to a wonderful, if painfully alluvial, course, meandering through as many difficult as joyous circumstances. Chief among them here is the realization that Lars knew, while playing what are possibly the most soul-attenuating moments in all of Brahms' works, that he had not long to live, and so not long to cherish the music that made life for him worth living, as it does for many of us. The proximity of life's dénouement brings the fragrance of finality--not sweet, but hopefully sublime--that Brahms always seems to understand. Trying to describe such tender but universal thoughts makes my tears well. I approach Brahms with trepidation these days exactly because he so effortlessly draws forth memories of the many, many dear ones I've lost. And never only those, but all the grieved of all the grieving. It is elegaic music for the civilized, who know well that civilization is a cenotaph.

Ruhe in Frieden.
