The odd irony that I discovered this incredible orchestra in lockdown and I would now travel to Frankfurt in a heartbeat to see it led by Andres Orozco-Estrada and yet can't. Thank you for your high-quality commitment to sharing the art of the composer and the artistry of the performers

Orozco-Estrada is now the principal conductor of the Houston Symphony Orchestra. And he’s just as good in Jones Hall as we was in Frankfurt (although I love recordings made with him at the podium of that orchestra, too). I hope Houston might be a little more doable.

@@terrylindsay2386 The Houston orchestra is certainly good, from what little I've heard, but I'm saddened at this move. The synergy between orchestra and conductor, combined with stunning musicianship here, I suspect may not quite be matched in Houston. I hope I'm wrong.
@bryangl12 жыл бұрын
@Alcina Thank you for taking the time to give me this information. I had no idea of the details of his connection with Houston (obviously). His work with the Frankfurt orchestra has been brilliant - including a great Mahler 2 so Houston can expect a memorable finale. I wonder why he resigned from Vienna, also where he will go next? I do hope we see more of him online.
@bryangl12 жыл бұрын
@Alcina Hi Alcina, And I would be number two. He is at home with just about every facet of orchestral music and with the Frankfurt orchestra, in my opinion, out -performs the Berlin ensemble - more warmth, and a feeling of youthful spontaneity with even the deepest works. The Weiner Symphoniker is brilliant but rather traditional, so I rather think there could have been a clash in the general approach to performances and interpretation. Just guessing.

At his best, Andrés Orozco-Estrada is a top flight conductor - and he and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony are a wonderful partnership. This performance in many ways outclasses many of the performances of more "famous" orchestras - but this orchestra deserves to be considered in the same conversation as those orchestras. Many great conductors and orchestras have recorded the Dvorak 8th Symphony, but few have the combination of drama, intensity, beauty and charm. When life returns (hopefully soon), this work is an excellent one for the pair to tour with and show how magnificent this partnership is.

@MisterPathetique8 ай бұрын
@@Failentin Of course I was exaggerating to make my point. This performance is not horrible, but I don't find it particularly good either. I don't think Orozco-Estrada has a lot of feeling for this music, and it shows right in the opening: the cellos should be leading, but here they're kinda drowned out. The third movement didn't impress me either, the melody tends to disappear because of Orozco-Estrada's random dynamic adjustments and tapered phrasing. But the worst thing to me is the general lack of energy and accent, and the flabby rhythm throughout the piece. And to be honest Orozco-Estrada is not helped by the overly compressed sonics either. I mean just compare the development section of the first movement or the very conclusion of the symphony with Honeck's performance, you'll understand what I'm talking about. Besides Honeck, I suggest you listen to Davis/Concertgebouw, Dohnányi/Cleveland, Neumann/Czech Philharmonic or even Karajan/Vienna Philharmonic. And then come back to Orozco-Estrada, you will immediately hear what's lacking in his performance. And please never assume that a performance "can't ever be topped". We can ALWAYS do better. Otherwise, why should we even bother playing this music?

The concert performances of the last 3 Dvorak Symphonies led by A O-E and the FRS are, imo, in the same class as those led by George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra recorded in the late 1950's and Istvan Kertesz and the LSO. Before he left Frankfurt I wish he had led a performance of the Dvorak 6th. Similarly I hope he leads performances of the Brahms Serenade #1 and the Schumann Symphonies during his tenure in Cologne. These concert videos are uniformly of the highest quality with superb ensemble playing and never a sign of the jaded playing which seems to infect so many supposedly top-notch orchestras. I always look forward to A O-Es returns to Frankfurt!
