This performance is the closest I've ever heard that rivals the 1958 & 1965 performances by George Szell and The Cleveland Orchestra. The first movement transition from Andante to Allegro ma non troppo was executed superbly. World renown conductors like Toscanini, Furtwangler and Munch, to name a few, seem to disregard the ma non troppo and take off as though late for an appointment. I don't know what the musicians of the Frankfurt Orchestra thought of their MD but the vast majority of the performances are imo superb and worthy of repeat listening. The Mendelssohn 5th is just one that deserves to be thought of as close to seminal. I miss listening to Maestro Orozco-Estrada and the Frankfurt Orchestra live more than once every year or two. Thank you!

I had the great pleasure of seeing this concert live in Frankfurt. Everytime I watch this concert, I enjoy every moment and every note with a glass of red wine and think to myself: "It´s realy tragic that Schubert probably never had the opportunity to experience his magnificent work live." A matchless genius, chapeau!!

I've read all the comments below and have now decided to only listen to the music and forget the comments as I'm totally out of my depth with those discussions about repeats and what-not. I'm thoroughly enjoying the performance and the sound quality is superb. Well done Frankfurt Radio Symphony and your sound engineers. This is how I like to hear an orchestra. I've always maintained - in my opinion of course - that the best seat in the house is the conductor's podium. Imagine getting all that sound in true stereo - one's ears - surrounded by the orchestra. Heaven.

Full of felicitous phrasing and detail and unaffected by Romantic excess, free of the pretentious bombast that some conductors force upon the work, Orozco-Estrada's great performance of this "Great" Symphony is the most delightful and satisfying one I've ever heard, to the extent that he has forced me to take a fresh look at it. It has never been a favorite symphony of mine, due to its repetitious nature and (perceived) lack of contrast in its movements, but I've enjoyed it here more than ever. The passage from 22:12, from the dramatic pause at 25:14, and the Brahmsian (!) passage at 26:09 are all exceptionally effective. Bravo, all!

Wow now that's what i call being inspired. symphony discovered by Schumann who found the symphony in a heap of unfinished manuscripts stuffed dust laden which were barely saved at all. Or used as well paper. 10 years after the death of Schubert Schumann had a great intuition to visit where Schubert.lived and died in Vienna. went through much unfinished sketches and located this huge symphony and so impressed was Schumann that he christened it as "the great"...after that he befriended a young Brahms and mentored him maybe even heaping too much praise on him.
