Yes, this is one of the solo details in this work. Mahler did not wrote jazz-music, but especially in this symphony the instrumentalists are also intended to engage in relevant solo passages. For me is this one important fact, which makes Mahler's music so fantastic and entertaining.

Grande, maestro! UN abrazo desde españa, hermano

i was word processing through much of the symphony; when i sensed the last movement was going to end, i changed to watch the orchestra, full page. i wanted to hear those tympani beats, which i think make the ending of this symphony one of the greatest endings. then the conductor ended the symphony, looking up, as if transigured, which he surely was. then he bowed his head and put his hands together in prayer. that is when i burst into tears, as the audience had remained silent until that point, before roaring to life. i love the way this orchestra's conductors call out each section for applause, as well as the whole orchestra. the first time i listened to the symphony, without watching it, i was sort of unimpressed. unimpressed no more. absolutely splendid!

Ahhl The memories. The first time I heard this live - American Symphony in Carnegie Hall, Catherine Comet, conducting - our son was a "Bim Bam Boy" as a member of the American Boychoir (RIP). I can still see and hear it in my head after all these years. It was his first Mahler 3rd of many, including the CD by Ozawa and the BSO with Jessye Norman. How many years ago! That little boy is now 38 with children of his own. And he still knows and loves all the symphonies of Mahler. This performance is one of the best I've ever heard, and I heard the Mahler 3rd several times in my decade as a classical music reviewer for a large metropolitan daily in the '80s and '90s.
@garyshelton30143 жыл бұрын
If you could, ask your son for us: as a child performing this work, did you sense how monumental it is? And did you feel old enough for it? I ask because the emotional swirl Mahler creates in No. 3 has always seemed almost too much to take, and it occurs to me that it should be rated PG-13 for (intense adult content or something).

There are only levels of magnificence when it comes to Mahler symphonies.

I would go as far as to say there are only two levels of conducting Mahler symphonies: sublime, or utter garbage. Andres' conducting definitely belongs to the former

Maestro Andrés Orozco-Estrada conducts Mahler supremely well. This is a wonderful third from the Master Composer.

To those who might refer to this performance as inferior, as a staunch lover of this work for four decades, this ranks right up with ones I witnessed in person by Mehta, Tilson Thomas, Sir Simon Rattle, Erich Leinsdorf, et. al. It is quite spectacular.

I agree with you. Just attended a Mahler 3 with Mehta and the Israel PO at Teatro Colón. Rather square at times (especially the scherzo). The first movement was just short of being dislodged, so slow was the tempo. Wonderful, however the alto solo (Lioba Braun) and the choruses, as well as the sublime finale.
@janouglaeser80494 жыл бұрын
@Steven Moore I love both Mehta's 5th (prefer the newer, 2013 version with Los Angeles Philharmonic) and his 6th. In my humble opinion, they're probably the best renditions of those two symphonies out there (Orozco Estrada's are also fine by the way, but not as tidy). But it's true that his conduction is mediocre for the rest of Mahler's symphonies.
@Quotenwagnerianer4 жыл бұрын
Rattle could have been one of the best interpreters of the 3rd. Sadly he insists on doubling the tempo during the apotheosis in the finale, when the timpani come in. Robbing the entire movement of it's climax.

I'm going to be attacked because of what I'm going to say: I have always secretly felt The Third to be Mahler's greatest symphony. It is so truly sincerely personal---- heart--felt. He was able to take the bits from his childhood, youth and adulthood and make the most powerful, existential, statement of them all! It is astonishingly sincere, no pretense. Although most would say that it is "emotiona", "sentimental", even, "cheesy", that's, insultingly wrong! Mahler is cosmically---- accurate---- in his personal utterance! As to the performance itself, I would be impossible to convince otherwise: Leonard Bernstein's old recording from around 1960 brings to truly painful "real life" the truly powerful philosophical of this, creation. Bernstein believes in it. It is obviously most personal to him, and he has the impressive skill to make the audience, feel, it, be moved by it and be entranced by it! However, this performance does offer something, SUPERB: the Contralto! She is so, movingly, expressive---- the most expressive that I have ever heard, either, live, or on recordings, both, on my many recordings of The Third, as well as, on Radio! If she has not donevso already, she would make a "top-rate" Lieder singer. She should avoid Opera in order to conserve her voice for a long time. It's too bad that the video didn't give her credit---- or at least I didn't see it. One more thing , I have a duty to say: Although I expressed my high regard for Leonard Bernstein's early recording, the Conductor's, and the Ochestra's work in this performance is truly---- fine. Among the may recordings of this work, it is top-rate. It's just that Leonard Bernstein and Bruno Walter, whom I believe didn't live to make a recording of The Third, were "genetically conceived" to be of the most intimate, spiritual, communion with the hurt-by-life Gustav Mahler! P.S.: I want to buy the Contralto's recordings. What is her name?
@Metamario683 жыл бұрын
I cannot agree more with your statements about the contralto's voice. I just wish she were the only one to ever sing this symphony because no one else has ever come close to what she has done. Absolutely marvelous and almost too good to be true, but thank God it is!

Very effective. Reminded me of my first concert in our high school orchestra; we played the 4th movement of Tschaikovsky's 6th, and our director held a similar silence at the end -- stunning. On KZbin there is a video of this same orchestra / conductor playing the 6th, and he holds the silence for 50 seconds. I would have loved to be in that audience.
