To further expand on what the kappelmeister said: It is actually the second Symphony the Mendelssohn wrote. But he withdrew it for revisions after a few performances because he was not satisfied. And then he never came around to revising it. So it was not published until after his death. And since it was published last it was numbered 5. Numberings in Mendelssohn Symphonies are the worst kind of mess. The 4th is not the 4th, the 2nd is not the 2nd and the 3rd is not the 3rd. The 4th is the 3rd, the 3rd is the 4th and the 2nd (Lobgesang) would have been the 4th, but Mendelssohn was unsure how to call it.

This is perhaps my favorite Mendelssohn symphony; the Italian and the Scottish are too well known. This symphony has such brilliance, especially the 4th movement. It is so climactic, so melodic, a "mighty fortress" of musical achievement. My most beloved Mendelssohn symphony. Note the fugue at 28:20. That final sounding note is to my ear dissonant.
@patrickglass93232 жыл бұрын

What's wrong with Shostakovitch?
@MadanaBhatKhandige10 жыл бұрын
One doesn't usually get so pure a connection with Shostakovich as one would with Beethoven or Mozart. When you hear the funeral march of the Eroica symphony, you know what Beethoven was going through, the funeral march fills your heart with somber emotions. The same cannot be said of Dimitri. (I don't hold Donizetti in much of a regard also, he never wrote any concert music!)

A marvelous testament of the Protestant Reformation. Let it not be forgotten that the work has a supremely spiritual element, built around the great hymn "A Mighty Fortress is Our God."
