Imagine showing an 1890s tunnel builder a TBM, he'd be astonished.

Just fabulous. This scale of tunnelling is awesome. I was lucky enough to be working and watching locally when the Chunnel was being built right from the start. Quality work lads, stay safe 👍🇬🇧

United Kingdom Of Great Britain London, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh is the best city in the world, The first railroad built in Great Britain to use steam locomotives was the Stockton and Darlington, opened in 1825. It used a steam locomotive built by George Stephenson and was practical only for hauling minerals. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which opened in 1830, was the first modern railroad, UK modern Train railway boost business forever.

Very well photographed and I felt your graphic of the TBM operation was very clear and concise. I was particularly interested in the route map as I lived in the Northolt/Greenford area as a boy and went to school in Horsenden near the Green Park Way destination of Caroline and Sushila. It was a scoop getting the jinterview with the TBM director. Keep up the good work. BM

@@davidcolley7714 unfortunately infrastructure doesn't appear as if by magic and takes time to construct. Also £100bn+ cost is nonsense.
@davidcolley7714
@davidcolley7714 Жыл бұрын
@@Rail_Focus That figure is far from being nonsense. The government initially estimated that HS2 would cost £37.5bn in 2009 prices. The government's official review of the scheme, which has been seen by the BBC, puts the potential cost at as much as £106bn. Remember it will take another ten or more years to complete and at the moment inflation is running at 11.052% Report after report bemoans the poor state of the railways in the north of England and Scotland. Because of this railway, Northern Powerhouse Rail has been savagely curtailed. So do you want to give a stab on how much this 200-mile railway from London to Manchester will finally cost?

How many wind turbines would the train need to make each journey?
@Rail_Focus
@Rail_Focus Жыл бұрын
Just as many/few needed as the current Pendolinos. Better wind powered trains than fossil fuel powered cars, trucks and planes.

I hope the trains will move faster than 5mm a second; I've been stuck on some services that would be left in that machine's dust. How does these machines negotiate changes in elevation or tunnels with bends?
@Rail_Focus
@Rail_Focus Жыл бұрын
I'm fairly sure each of the hydraulic rams can be independently controlled to "steer" the TBM, but also each ring segment will be a different shape to match the contours, which in part will also dictate the direction of travel.

How’s the spoil coming out loose or slurry and how’s it being moved by train or truck
@Rail_Focus
@Rail_Focus Жыл бұрын
Loose via conveyor, most used to remodel the golf course or moved by articulate dump trucks towards Colne Valley for earthworks.

so you said that tbm would bore 18mts a day,and in the next breathe said that the other tbm has done about 80mts in 2 weeks ,so my sums says that does not add up right ,could we have the answers thanks
@Rail_Focus
@Rail_Focus Жыл бұрын
Once the TBS are up to speed they hope to achieve 18m per day, that much is true. The first few weeks will likely be spent making sure everything's dialed in correctly, hence the slow start initially.

I'm still waiting for someone to cost comparison tunnelling 90% of the route versus what's happening now Taking into account all CPO of land, houses, security of sites construction equipment, etc
@Rail_Focus
@Rail_Focus Жыл бұрын
Through London tunnelling makes sense, but farmland is still relatively cheap. However, it's not just cost to consider, but energy consumption too. Above ground new high-speed trains are very efficient (using the same or less energy travelling at 320km/h than existing Pendolinos do travelling at just 200km/h) but below ground the piston effect increases energy consumption, so tunnels need to have a very wide bore and must be implemented where completely necessary.
@davidcurry4433
@davidcurry4433 Жыл бұрын
@Rail_Focus But you still haven't answered my simple question. We know the cost per mile for tunnelling. It's the same cost, whether it's the 1st mile or the 50th mile.. The size of the tunnel is irrelevant as long as it can carry a train at 200mph. Let's face it, underground wins hands-down in my eyes, and my point is it can be done, and nobody give it a thought..
@Rail_Focus
@Rail_Focus Жыл бұрын
@@davidcurry4433 the diameter of the tunnel is relevant as the wider the bore the more material needed to be excavated and the bigger the tunnel rings need to be adding to the cost. But you can't compare the cost difference between tunneling under London and tunneling under farmland, as the value to London real estate is vastly more than open farmland. So no it wouldn't be cost effective to drive a 140 mile long tunnel. The energy requirements are also important as they would add to the operational costs and therefore further erode the benefits vs cost of tunneling. So in answer to your question, common sense tells us tunneling 90% isn't practical or cost effective and is not necessary given the relatively small impact HS2 will have on overall land take.
@davidcurry4433
@davidcurry4433 Жыл бұрын
@Rail_Focus When i say 90%, i actually mean in and out every 10-15 mile, and not a continuous tunnel. Like I've previously said, nobody's willing to do a cost comparison, all the consultations that took place, not one person was interested, im sure it's the same as Heathrow's T5, a land grab..

Tunelling costs per mile are not the same regardless of distance. If there are shallow foundations of buildings in close proximity they need underpinning.
