Hi Paul. Great tip about using a dog tray as a drip tray. Definitely going to look at those. Well done on completing the surface grinder restoration. Brilliant series. I for one hope that in time you find another machine to add to the workshop and a new series ensues. 👏👏👍😀

The wheel slips a little bit in the blotters every time you turn the motor switch on. Do it a few times on and off, then measure the wheel runout. You will see a few thousandths. You can dress it for sure, but your balance goes out the window. This is why all my grinders have VFD drives. Soft start takes care to eliminate the rapid start. Slowing the wheel with the VFD is also great to dress the wheel at a few hundred RPM. Grit does not go all over, and you can dress a spiral into the face of the wheel to clear swarf and prevent loading up the wheel. It does work well. So many advantages to a VFD. I know you have settled on a phase converter, but you can't know until you go through a process. Cheers. ----Doozer

Great job getting the old girl up and running! Tip for you, flip it on and let it get nice and warm, especially before truing the wheel or grinding in stuff like chucks and critical stuff. Things like bearings change as it comes up to temp! Ya didnt show it, but every time that wheel gets removed, run the diamond again. It's gonna be a great little grinder for the kind of stuff you mess with. I picked up a B&S 6x12 on fleabay and while I don't use it but a couple of times a year, it's a sweetheart and doesnt take up much space. I find surface grinding fun and relaxing.

Hi Robert, the thing about Brit vs American tool names is you can often link them to please everyone like a "pillar drill press" or a "spanner wrench" 😁 to avoid the Zed/Zee thing I say up/down axis. Why highlight a difference when you can just avoid it? My dad had quite a lot of American tools which I guess came over during or just after the War. Cheers

@@HaxbyShed Possible, but those tables are normally used with fixtures, so the fixture would be surfaced with the table to get it right, the table just has to be close enough so the fixture does not need much to true it.

Iv got the same grinder and mag chuck. Simply mark out the max working area on the chuck face and relieve the rest around the edge on the mill. You only need to take it down 0.5mm and that will give you plenty of material to resurface many times before you have to mill it again

@HaxbyShed Hi Paul, I was looking for a basic vacuum for wood working, the one I purchased was a Rocwood 20 Litre 1200 watt, model RWAC3; currently £ 49 on Amazon, or 13 coffees ☕️. It has an aluminium lined hose, OD is 34/35 mm. I have it coupled with one of those cyclone vortex gadgets, not too noisy, and quite good filtration.

Traditionally chisels are ground in the surface grinder in the opposite orientation that you have. Then use the cross feed instead of the table feed, and the radius of the wheel will be imparted into your chisel edge. This hollow grind allows easy honing on your flat whet stone. -----Doozer

You could always mill a slight relief on each end of the mag chuck you have, just a few thou deep enough for the wheel to clear at the end of each stroke. Instead of looking for a smaller chuck.

@kooldoozer 2 ай бұрын
I believe your table has warped from the tee bolts pulling on the slots for a long time. The heads are likely too small. The underside of the bolt heads peen the inside of the tee slots. If there is any distortion in the tee slots that you can see or feel, this is what likely happened. You can fix this, much the same as some fitters have done when rebuilding Bridgeport tables. You can peen the underside of the table (with a hammer) and induce stress on the back side. This balances and counteracts the stress from the tee slot deformation. The result is the table bends straight again. The same process used to camber a beam. You can use spot heating or peening for that. Same idea. ---Doozer

Hi Paul, good to see some sparks. I’ll say this as you didn’t mention it; when dressing the diamond must be just behind the centre line of the wheel I.e on the outfeed side so if it catches the wheel will push it away. If it’s on other side the rotation will pull it into the wheel and you really don’t want that. I take about a thou off per dressing pass and you need to to go a lot faster across the wheel, I go as fast as I can rotate the handwheel this gives a better dress. Yes your chuck is too big as you can’t surface it with the machine, this seems to be a common issue as mine was the same as is my friends. I’d look to swap it out. Do not be in a hurry to surface the replacement as it takes a while to get your hand in and learn what works for you.

When grinding if you can have the work at an angle you can reduce the heat input. Meaning, if you are say grinding a 6 x1 bit of metal dont have the metal length wise but at an angle on the mag chuck so you have many short grinds rather than long ones, giving the metal time to cool a little. If you haven't come across Adam the machinist, that's Not abom79 by the way, take look as he has some convincing words on grinding.

That height irregularity is always a problem with shaper tables, which is why this design is odd, because it’s longer than the table movement. That’s odd because you’re supposed to bring the table before using the machine. Then you grind the bottom of the vise, without turning the vise on, just lightly hold it with clamps at the ends, pushing at the vise. Then, flip and machine the top of the vise. Some say with the magnet off, but I do it with the magnet on as that’s how it is used. The problem with a long table is that you can’t grind it properly. That’s a design defect. If this were mine, I’d do what the manufacturer should have done, and machine the ends of the table down by about 4 mm. Leave 8” in the middle to mount the vise on. Then you can grind that to level it, as should be done. The problem with just grinding the vise is that every time you remove it, you lose your exact level if it isn’t placed exactly parallel to the table movement. Though it should be parallel if you want the vise guide at the side, and end, to be accurate. Whoever said to get an 8” table is correct. Otherwise you can’t grind the vise either, as you’ve found. You can’t cheat with your vise by removing the stop screws, just to grind the top. It will be ok, but not ideal.
