@@grahamthomas6381 That isn't why it's being built. Now that you know you're wrong, I'm certain you'll apologise for your earlier comments. What IS it about, I hear you say? Capacity. The fact is that there is more demand for people and freight to move between the north west and london, that should be obvious from the roads - this adds capacity for passengers and freight (at current design) equal to an 8-lane motorway with room to increase significantly without additional engineering being required (via digital signalling) The fact is our roads and rails are already over capacity and if this isn't built then significantly more roads will be taking up much more land, making much more noise and pollution. The high speed aspect of it is because you may as well make it high speed since you're designing it from scratch, the cost isn't significantly more than a conventional speed line.

@@xaiano794 The argument for increasing capacity on the existing networks doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Surely to take passengers off of the current service and leave that space free for freight would the train not have to stop numerous times at the various stations? If it doesn't then it appears to only be for the few people that want to go specifically from B'ham to London and everybody else would have to stick to the current service, thereby not actually achieving what it set out to. If it does make numerous stops it'll either have to waste an enormous amount of energy getting up to speed and then stopping again or not run at full speed at all. If this is the case i'm sure it would have been a lot easier and therefore cheaper to build a slower speed line, with a slower speed train you could go around obstacles rather than buying/moving/tunneling your way through them. I'm no expert on trains but looking from outside this seems to be the case. Hopefully there's enough folk in B'ham that want to go to London and vice versa to make it pay.
