Huw has such a punchy, to-the-point method of delivery. Very effective, very authoritative, you know he is an expert once he finishes his sentence. He is a terrific spokesman for HS2 and Network Rail. Update: I'm in the States, so I did not know Huw was a former BBC news presenter with years of broadcast training and experience. He seems happier in this job, too. Talking about construction will do that to a media person who likes being around things being built. (Plus, network news can be soul-sucking; been in the industry myself, done that, glad to be gone.) All makes sense now; he's a great hire for the p.r. aspects of HS2. Well done, Network Rail.

With all the depressing news about HS2 cuts, it's encouraging to see that SOMEthing is still getting built and that it'll be really good. I'm hoping that it'll be as good as the Lizzie line, and then people will badger the government to re-think their stupid plans to scrap the northern legs.

Hopefully when the road is lowered, the pavement is left flat. Too often you see under rail lines the pavement follows the road into a dip, when obviously there is no need to have tall clearances on a pavement, and it can add a lot of unnecessary difficulty to e.g. wheelchair users or someone needing to push a buggy.

I wish more people could view these films as gives a lot of context as to why these projects become so expensive. For example, let's lower the road under a bridge, looks straight forward on paper. However there are then multiple utilities under that road that then have to isolated and rerouted. So much in construction that Joe public does not see.

Great video, I always enjoy your special invitation days. My understanding is that the TBM’s for the tunnels west of Old Oak Common station(Northolt East tunnel) will be launched in a westbound direction from the Victoria road crossover box and the 360m of tunnel between the crossover and station box will be built using road headers, a more traditional method to the TBM’s. Amazing video Geoff, as always. These are your best. Huw is absolutely great. It's beyond dissapointing that on top of the Northern sections past Birmingham being cancelled, the section to Euston is being 'delayed'... I hope it all does end up happening. Though to be honest, I personally believe the worst HS2 loss for London is that the North London Line (Overground) won't have a station at Old Oak Common, meaning that it'll be far far harder for residents of both North and South London to access HS2. What I'm taking away from this, is that the station is built to handle 250,000 (+) passengers per day - as an intermediate station. @@gregjalepeno6769 No doubt the Rail buffs can put me straight on this one, I thought the UK invented 4ft 8 1/2 & that's what we & they use in the EU etc but no doubt there's more to it than that. I was never advocating reverting to GWR Broad Gauge or anything like that. there are numerous reasons why HS2 has gone into the buffers IMO, & a straighter line might have been do-able before Ernest Marples & the RHF-lobby in the 50s had made Britain so road-oriented. I think, being 1st in the rail game made us more fossilised re: inability to build a network with future expansion potential. The power of local competing interests have militated against double-decker trains (bridge sizes & pre-existing structures etc). I'm sure it will be a magnificent terminus station to rival the Victorian greats of Paddington, St Pancras etc. It's just a shame it's going to be a terminus in a place that no one wants to get to

Only if private funding is found. Note the bit in the video where they commit to putting the TBMs in the ground before finishing the station but make no commitment to actually start building the tunnel to Euston

@@MarkStamp-o6p Sorry I disagree, the Government is leading people on, for example the Prime minister stated that he is cancelling the HS2 line to Manchester, result every one thinks that the HS2 line and trains will not go past Birmingham, incorrect as the HS2 line is being built North from Birmingham to Lichfield where the HS2 line will be connected to the existing WCML for trains to travel on to Manchester, next OOC is being built as a through station with no facilities to terminate trains so they can lay over between services, it is only being built for trains to stop at and allow passengers off and then carry on . The TBM's are still going to construct the tunnels from OOC to Euston as once OOC is open this work would not be able to be carried on plus Euston is now being built with 6 instead of 11 platforms with a 7th platform for duel use of HS2 trains and WCML trains, every one reads the national anti HS2 papers, if you read Railway Periodicals you would see the correct idea of things

Hi Geoff, I have 2 potential topics of debate for you: 1) When HS2 reaches Euston Station, do you think TFL will consider extending more underground lines to Euston to meet the extra demand, or will they just make HS2 passengers use the already rammed Northern and Victoria lines? 2) When Old Oak Common station finally opens, do you think TFL may think about extending underground lines to the station, for example the Central, District or Piccadilly lines that already serve west London? Or possibly build a bus station there? Or even both? Having said that though, they might not extend the Piccadilly line because that already goes to Heathrow Airport. I'd be interested to know what your thoughts are on these matters 😀

Thinking of signage to come there, especially a totem pole (like with Stratford) or something, the order - as per the hierarchy - should (!) be as follows: HS2 (National Rail) GWR (National Rail) Elizabeth line/London Crossrail (National Rail, TfL) London Overground (National Rail, TfL) -- if only walking connection and not immediate part of the station London Underground (TfL) -- as above; should it be considered a corresponding connection

You can easily see why the cost went from a 32 billion budget assessment to 100 billion and still rising. The 32 billion estimate was a 2 line estimate comprising 200 miles x £x million a mile plus 24% contingency equals 32 billion. But the detail has bridge lowering, bridge raising, unforeseen ground conditions, thousands of highway alterations, thousands of planning conditions equals 100 billion plus. And the contracts for the track and trains are currently out to tender so the cost for these items are unknown (my estimate 150 billion plus)
